Title: Gav's Haro Zippo Retro Master Build - Finally Finished
Post by: GavinDavis on October 11, 2012, 09:42 AM
I picked up a cheapy Zippo a couple of months ago that was badly listed on the bay :), originally it started life as chrome but when I collected it, some of the chrome had started to bubble and flake around the downtube and the stays so my plans to polish it up and keep it standard went out the window.

I really like the look of some of the retro masters that people have done in the past so decided i'd give it a go.  This is how it first looked when I got it:

I stripped the bike down completely and decided to have the frame and forks powdered white.  I then ordered the 85 Master decals from the one and only Del :)

Got the frame back yesterday and was really impressed with the powder job! :) ....Took me a while to unmask the areas that they had masked for me but its all part of the fun i guess :)

I couldnt wait until it was built to get the decals on so I set about it like a hooligan! :)

Lookin good all the same  :daumenhoch:

Lol I know yeah :) .  Ive always loved the Zippo's design so I thought what the hell eh :) .  The overall build cost would probably have bought me about 5 Zippo's by the time its done haha.  Thinking about it....I probably should have just bought 5 Zippo's!!  ;D but its all about the satisfaction after eh

Im the same, the decals are my favourite bit, although these were a little monkey cos of the way the downtube is shaped near the head tube....kinda goes from round to oval doesnt it

So, with one thing and another ive got a little bit further in the build.  I stripped the original Araya's that came on the bike and I polished and rebuilt them using the original megahubs along with white spokes and anno red Araya nipples :) .  I also polished the Fusion stem up.....

I got mine done at redditch shotblasting and powdercoating bud.  They do a real nice job :) .....I would have sent it to Dan but I knew the finish of the work at my local coaters was top notch :)

Are you having yours powdered?

:LolLolLolLol:....Freakin expensive turd it turned out to be Ed but I reckon ive polshed it well :) .  I havnt racked it up yet price wise....not too sure if I dare to be honest.  bit of a labour of love throughout as I constantly thought...."its a Zippo...what are you doing??"

But hey ho....I love everything about it :) ....damn it yeah youre right about the relectors, I meant to ditch those but obviously got excited about taking some pics  ;D

I suppose i could go all out and get the plastic chain guard....front and rear fleccys and the ones for the wheels too.... he he  ;D

Crackin job there Gav, always thought the thickness of the downtube spoiled this frame but i could more than live with that. Sits lovely and nice to see those frequency g's in the flesh.
Been toying with getting some for my new build but images of them are thin on the ground  :4_17_5:

Cheers Clint  :daumenhoch: ....The tyres are 100% getting thin on the ground bud, I ordered 2 from Winstanleys as they had them on offer for £20 each.  However, only one turned up and to cut a long story short.....I had to find another to match it.

If you do decide to go for some.....Flat Squirrel bmx are doing them for £25 each incl postage  :daumenhoch: ....Get in there quick before they sell out!

:daumenhoch: ....Yeah I got the disc directly from them bud.  Ive done a few seperate orders with them now and they are top notch!  The last order I placed only took a week to get here so you cant go wrong!  Theyve always marked the parcels as gift too so you wont get stung by customs :)

It was $25 US I think which works out to about £17 excluding postage (which is reasonable) ....If you order a few bits its worth your while  :daumenhoch: .  Their address is www.porkchopbmx.com  :daumenhoch:

Its a bit of an odd one with flat squirrel because they dont accept direct card payment??  Theyve got a Paypal option which is what I would have done.....I chose the bank transfer option thinking that it was a card payment thing but it wasnt, they give you their account details to deposit the money into their bank?

Bit random but theyre as good as gold....and theyre on FB too if you need to ask anything  :daumenhoch:

Gav, that's cracking mate :daumenhoch:

I won one about ten years ago on the Bay and never built it, so I gave it to my bro. It's his daily ramp rider still to this day and he rides it every ramp night we go on as he swears by them as a bit of midschool tank construction :daumenhoch:

I also built one for my mate's son out of a load of spares to get him into BMX and he trashes it every day - I have to re-build it everytime I see him :2funny:
