i have been beating on this worn out freewheel for hours. broken every tool i have had in the little pin holes
so i got my mate to stick weld it together
(http://30cms.co.uk/temp/z/fw2.jpg)
then some more thwacks but this time on the sprocket teeth, allowing me to use a girthier drift.
and it flew off

bit brutal but i need the hub
-
i see he's keeping britain tidy.
-
also if you put it in a vice, it crushes the outer race, and you can use the wheel for leverage.
never had one stay put with that method.

we tried that just before the sticker welder come out
-
surprised. they have always dropped off with that method. and ive had some old rusty shite thats been sat in the rain for 20 years.

i didnt really want to do the vice up too tight, in case it deformed the hub
-
ah...thats where you chickened out...ive wondered about it, but ive never crushed a hub either, or even worn the threads...the alloy seems to be a lot more flxible than the hardened steel of the freewheel.
-
bike shop near me does that squashed in vice turn and off they come every time
-
is that the rom bin :LolLolLolLol:
-
all the rubbish at rom goes into the rom rubbish magnet.....the performance bowl
Dave
-
next time i will vice it harder
with the stick welder, it took literally one touch
-
well, whatever works is correct. heat probably helped too.
-
now i have a fixed wheel freewheel
like craig strong had
-
i used a air chisel to get the one of from the deep blue sea wheels of funmonster
took about 2 secs lol after soaking and beating it for 2 days with a chisel
-
if you dont want the freewheel take it to bits, remove all the bearings and the pawls. it will give you 2 nice flats that you can grip in a vice.Put a tyre on and use the wheel diameter as leverage, hay ho away you go. it is a mighty fine feeling when a freewheel is removed.
-
how do you strip the freewheel when it is on the hub?
-
the way i have done it is to weld a solid bar about 12" to free wheel so it does not move then use bar to lever off freewheel, also heat from welding helps free it, this saves beating the sh*t out of it risking damage to hub, just remember to cover up hub with wet rag, because weld spatter will burn alloy hub and fook it :daumenhoch:
-
I think its probably too late, but I have a hub that I stripped off a knackered rim and I want to get the freewheel off, any way of doing it before I rebuild the wheel?????? :idiot2:
-

they have a bearing cap with either two holes or more undew this and the bearings and stuff fall out
unless its the new db ones and thats on the inside lol
and ratty use a air chisel mate of in secs
-
Ta Mate, now to find me a mate with an air chisel???
-
i work in the motor trade so was in a bodyshop
working and asked the guy to have a go lol

you are gonna struggle
rebuild the wheel loosely
it will save trying to hold the hub still and wrecking it
-
you can very carefully use a disc cutter to remove it ,removing a bit at a time with patcience it will come off i saved a bullseye hub this way :daumenhoch:
-
fook all methods but the vice one
i turned off 2 long term stuckies with a vice today
the stickweld was good, but the vice is nice
