Hello Mark,
I did find my notes - not an easy thing on a Monday morning... : )
In 1968 Bill Oury made the first after market grip MX Grip. It did not have the ribbed lines between the grip and flange. They were made in Green Mt. Falls, Co.
In the early 70's Willard J. Merritt Jr. took over the company, had a new mold made to include the ribs. He moved the company to Wheaton, IL.
Thank you for your e-mail.

I see why you raised the question though because after you asked i had a look in the old mags and could only find two adds the last of wich was 8004 bmxaction, both pics in the adds were smooth.

That's how the files are labeled on mag 23 Mark when you download them.
To be precise the file named BMXA_8004 or for those of us that Johnny made it too difficult for just for, 1980, April edition. :daumenhoch:
