Back in the early 90s the bmx scene in Cheltenham was pretty crap. The local bmx track had became overgrown and full of druggys.
So a lot of mates started to head to Bath Victoria park for there fix. No idea if the ramps are still there?
Soon after Cheltenham council built the Pittville park ramps so everyone just when freestyle mad.
After a string of mongooses I wanted to stay with the make and the villain was the bike hanging up in the window of our local bmx shop. So in 1995 I was lucky enough to get bought one.
Here's a pic of it from around 1996 slightly modified.

Brief spec , peregrine bars,v monster tyres, 990s, fishbone cd, triple traps.
Sadly I sold this on around 2003 for £30. :-(.
So this built is going to be a replica of my old bike with the help of 2 pictures I still have lol.
Frames /forks or full bikes don't pop up too often but managed to find this on the bay which I snagged for £30 funny enough.
Thanks to a member on here for picking up and packing over to me.

Haha. I know wtf is that !!
Reason I bought this is its pretty much original.
Anyway first things first a strip down and look at the frame.

Not great but worth an acid bath along with a few other bits I had knocking about.
Well 3 table spoons and 24 odd hours later.

Looked amazing well happy with the results. Forks came out great too but were not that bad to start with anyway.
So frame and forks were sorted and now I spent awhile collecting parts.
Odi rough necks from the USA.

Peregrine q bars. These were from the USA pretty cheap I just need to get these chromed.
This is where I'm up to now so will keep this updated as I go along.
It may interest some people lol.
-
great stuff !! :4_17_5:
-
Stupid question, what acid did you use to remove rust
-
Oxylic Acid fella. You can get it on eBay for under a tenner. Just go easy with it and don't leave it anymore than 24 hours. Some rust spots turn yellow and your need to scrub it off. Longer you leave it on the tougher it is to remove.
24 hours is about right I've found and I've done a few bits since the frame.
Delivery today

Rear cable set up bitd. Few cable ties and black tape. :LolLolLolLol:
The gyro cables on the bike when I got it were no good rusty and snapped so ordered some new ones. Then replicated the old set up. As said this will be a replica bike. lol

Been looking for ages for a fishbone cd. Seems you can get a lot of the old school parts but some mid school stuff is even harder to come across. But managed to bag this survivor one last year and not seen another since. (Que someone linking up to a shop that still sells them lol?)
Bit Of a crap flash picture of it fitted its not that bad condition.

Small update -
I've now collected most the parts to build this bike.
990s diacompe
Fishbone u brake plates
Fishbone chainring
V monster tyres
Chrome peregrine q bars (the black bars are now for sale)
Blue triple trap peddals
Rear mongoose pegs
Gt front pegs
New gyro cables upper and lower
The wheels are the only bit holding me up in need of a respoke as the spokes are very rusty and passed it. The local bike shop can respoke and supply for £30 each. But I may go for it myself :-/
Few bits still needed 10mm front axle 175mm. And to try and find an xposure gyro cover.
-
interested in the black q bars mate ;)
-
Slight update.
Sold the black Q bars on and bought some already chromed. Local chromed were going to charge a lot and just made sence to buy some already done.
Fitted the diacompe 283's and the odi rough necks.

Really all I need to do now is respoke the wheels and build it up.
-
looks lovely so far my mate had one back in the day untill it got nicked . i got the big brother to yours ie the hooligan and mongoose did some nice stuff around 94 95
-
Cheers fella. Yeah mongooses were very popular around here late 80s to late 90s.
-
here mine http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/hutch1970/100_0203rs.jpg
-
Great restoration. Looking good. :daumenhoch: :4_17_5:
-
Small update on the wheels , thanks to the sticky on here from stidds
It sort of got me on track to respoking the 48s.
Before.

Rusty spokes and some missing. Strip down and clean up.

Still need a longer front axle so that's my next job.
-
Good job there bud :)....I find it really a real therapy building wheels :)
-
It's the first pair I've done so did take abit of time. Didn't quite work out like the walk through on here for some reason not sure it there is a different way for 48s. But it's done and another job off the list. Will just get them tweaked by the local shop as I don't have a jig.
-
really enjoyable that!
-
A bit pissed off at the min :-\
Sent the wheels round to a local shop and asked for them to be tweaked up. Said any problems give me a shout etc. anyway 2 days have passed and no phone call. ( he said it will be done same day as I dropped them down). Anyway ring up ask how it's going only to be told he's completely stripped them down ? I said I only wanted a tweak up and to call if any problems. ( I won't be doing 30 foot jumps on the bike ffs.) he's now rebuilding them saying "oh it's abit tricky trying to finish a job someone else has done. So a £5 job of tweaking is now gonna cost a lot more but he never rang to say.
-

take the bits back , rebuild yourself and take them to another bike shop and berate the said bike shop to anyone that will listen ! :daumenhoch:
-
Well when he rang he was in the middle of rebuilding them. That was Saturday I've heard nothing since. :crazy2:
-
Good job so far :4_17_5:
Nice to see someone replicating their old ride :daumenhoch:
If i did my last one from bitd it'd be a right bag o sh1te ;D
-
Well when he rang he was in the middle of rebuilding them. That was Saturday I've heard nothing since. :crazy2:
i hate shitty bike shops that feel you owe them something !
-
The guy in the shop should have noticed they were built slightly wrong straight away and explained that when you gave them to him. From what I can see, they would tweek fine, its just the valve hole that's in the wrong place, making pumping up ya tyre a bitch.
Demand it for free and twat him
-
He was concerned about thread length on some of the spokes. That's all I could get out of him but a simple call to explain wouldn't of gone a miss.
-
The chain was shot very loose and was due a change. They still sell the kmc chains lucky.

-
Very near finishing now. Finally got round to building it up, rear brake set up all done and just waiting for a plate for the front U brake. :daumenhoch:

Same workshop as above but in 1996

All built up , a few odds and ends still to find like the xposure gyro cover impossible to find anywhere. Have emailed a few users on here who I've seen have one fitted to their bikes in a bid they may sell. :LolLolLolLol:
The front axle in 175mm is impossible to find so I cant fit the pegs. May have to get an engineering place to knock one up. Bitd was easy to pick one up. All I can find is standard size but need the extra bit for fitting the pegs.
Pegs on the back need some paint stripper as the chrome is mint underneath and someone's just rattle canned them black.
Nice rider though , pleased with how the frame came out but surprised how some mid school bits are hard to find. Also beware using the acid with decals still on I've noticed some have cracked and I can't put it down to anything else other than the acid bath.
-
Bike looks mint mate I would love to build one of my old ones but which bike from what time would be difficult :). I used to use mountain bike spindles on the front can you not get one of those and a deep socket. I know it sounds a bit bodge but hey thats what we all did back then.
-
Cheers for the comment fella. I did get a longer spindle from a bike shop recently but he gave me the wrong size and doesn't have any in the right size. So might get one made up soon.
-
Small update - No luck buying a longer front spindle so I could fit the pegs so I called on my engineer uncle.
He made one from scratch at 175mm long that's done the job.

-
Hi did u get those bars of old school flava the chromes bit flat on em
-
Did mate yes a long time ago now. Chromes good just needed some peak polish.
-
Was this on Ebay recently? Saw one just like it going a week or so back.
-
Nope not mine unless someone nicked the pics. ?
I've been building and sourcing parts for along time for this one to build it to my spec from 97.
I've had a quick look on eBay and yeah a sort of standard one sold awhile back.
For £50 odd.
-
Looks great! Nice bike! :daumenhoch:
-
great build, enjoyed the thread :coolsmiley:
-
Lovin mid school mongoose, excellent.
-
Nice bike and story. :daumenhoch:
It might just be the pictures, But in your original pics the centre of the pedals looks white. Would you have painted them back in the day and left the cages blue?
-
Thanks for the comments guys :daumenhoch:
Gary - Its just the picture, they are a picture of a picture so its very crap.
The pedals were defo blue cages with silver centres odyssey Triple traps . I got them from the bike shop the Goose came from ,free of charge after a weeks work experience with school. 8) haha
Nice bike and story. :daumenhoch:

Talking of the bike shop , while cleaning out some draws the other day I found this. I really thought it got binned but nope. This is the original receipt of my villian from page 1 in the pictures. :D ..
Its a shame the bike isn't the original one, as the invoice would have been a nice touch. when I sold it I remember thinking do I keep it and hang it up on the wall. :-\ I had a lot of good memories with mates riding it about the streets and skatepark in Cheltenham.
Still that's why I decided to build a replica of it. :daumenhoch:
I still got to paint strip the rear pegs that's on the to do list. And Im still looking out for a xposure gyro cover if anyone knows of one knocking about :daumenhoch: .
-
Still looking for an Xposure gyro cover like in the picture. I know some have them tucked away. :daumenhoch:
-
Great thread and great build :4_17_5:

After some rear mongoose stunt pegs if anyone has some ? I had a go with paint stripper on the rear pegs but god knows what they painted it with. Got some paint off but I can see why they painted them black lol really bad condition.

Wow took a long time to track one of these down but finally found one.
-
Awesome
Where did you find that?
-
Alright dude, I found it on some mid school bmx Facebook page. :LolLolLolLol: and even better was only a swap with some small parts. I really thought I'd never find one to replicate the old bike.
So still needed is black odi roughneck grips. I have clear at the moment. I know some black ones are listed on eBay from the USA but they are fakes.
-
Sweet man glad you found one
Il keep an eye out for you dude
Did you win them pegs?
-
Nope missed the end. Did pm him as no bids were placed.
-
Hi, I have, from what I know, a 1996 Mongoose Villain, as you will see from the pics it is in a poor condition but I have started restoring, please can you tell me where the Decals for yours come from as they are the same as the 1996 I think
Any help would be great?(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/16/yberamar.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/16/u3abade7.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/16/5ubusa3y.jpg)

Hi could you please send he as many pics as possible of your decals as I'm having some made. Pleeeeaaassse 😜
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Please???
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Hi that is a survivor bike right there !
My decals have cracked , not sure if this is a result of the oa bath I did or being kept out in a garage.
So I'd like some myself tbh. Who's making them for you and how much would it cost for a few sets to be made as I know of a few after them in blue.
I've finished a few other bikes so now just finishing off this one and managed to bag a new mongoose seat for the villain.
-
Picked up this nos mongoose seat other day.
Only fitted to a select few and very hard to come by.
The seat on the bike was very faded and you just can't beat a new one.
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v37/rs_daz/B42ACD48-FAD1-4354-A155-AB664F88EFE9.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rs_daz/media/B42ACD48-FAD1-4354-A155-AB664F88EFE9.jpg.html)
-
So it was you who out bid me lol
Luckily i messaged him tho and he had another seat :)
Going to put it on the bike tomorrow :daumenhoch:
-
Haha ! Fair play hes got some good parts ! Dont think we will find anymore too easy.
-
Yeah man i got some bars, tyres and a headset off him
-
Love this build inspires me to get on with building my bike from bitd diamondback riptile but cannot find one so have a venom to paint blue :'(

Pretty much all done now ! Fair play its taken some time to find all the parts but its done !
Found a pair of Black ODI Roughneck grips nos.
Replaced the rear pegs
Updated the seat clamp to a nos one.
Only taken about three years
This was the original back in 1996 that I sold for about £30 in 2000. With the help of this shot the above was built.

Always wanted to do this but have no clear pics of my old bikes and remembering all the parts is tricky, well done and glad you finished it! :daumenhoch:
-
Nice job, looking at the pics you'd never know its not the same bike :daumenhoch:
-
Always wanted to do this but have no clear pics of my old bikes and remembering all the parts is tricky, well done and glad you finished it! :daumenhoch:
Cheers !
I seem to have a good memory haha and I was lucky to still have a snap of it. Some bits were a case of going through ebay and hoping to see a part listed or parts on here to remember the make. 8)
-
top stuff :4_17_5: nice resto n worth the wait :daumenhoch: :D
good to see a mid price range bike restored and great that it is so close to the pic , slowly being upgraded from factory spec with better parts , briill :daumenhoch:
-
