Would it be a problem fitting a stem so it sits on top of the headset without any spacers?? I cant think of a reason but cant recall seeing it done. :-\
I know there are stems that have a built in race thet replace the top part of the headset.

you mean the locking spacers that hold the part with the bearing underneath ? if so no.. it ll loosen every time you look at it !
race is at the bottom on the middle of the forks ! not sure i read you right ! :crazy2:

Top loader stem, So hitting the frame wont be an issue.

Top loader so all should be good.
So long as you have the top part of the headset (the bit that the bearings sit against) then all's good - I run without spacers (although at the mo I've got one small one as I have a front load stem).

With a top loader you'll be fine, might wanna chop the steerer down if you don't want spacers on top of the stem

on a 1 1/8 ? the black n chrome bit under the stem is one piece ie the the top cap ,with a 1mm steel washer/ spacer, but if the compression wedge sits above the frame when compressed then can see no reason why the top cap and washer can't be left out , aside from leaving the bearing exposed, if its a sealed bearing then no probs , semi sealed you'd just have to watch for dirt getting in .

Yep it's for the gingemobile Jim. I'll be leaving the topcap on. I could turn the stem upside down but dont like the look of it. Your pic has answered my question :daumenhoch:

It's perfectly sound to run your stem ontop of an internal headset without the top cap.
As long as you've got the compression ring in there.
I run my BSD race stem straight on top of my internal headset to get the 8.6 bars just the right height.
