Title: ((Hi)) Newbie biting off more than he can chew ???
Post by: Funkyworm on November 23, 2012, 01:27 PM
Just wanted to say hi,

Like many of you it appears as we reach our (middle years) we seem to have the opportunities to re live the good times & start to buy back some of the things that were special to us in our youth, My biggest regret was selling my Chrome 84-85 Rickman freestyler in 1993 to fund my first snowboard !

I recently managed to acquire a white one on ebay & Im in the process of stripping it down & re building with parts similar to my original, I was going to do a (different) paint job as some of these look fantastic but i think i owe it to the old girl to keep her true & honest ! whilst buying parts i managed to get hold of a really cheap frame & fork combo so it looks like ill be doing my first two builds simultaneously (stupid & expensive i know) plus the girlfriend doesnt know about the second one  :daumenhoch:

Basically i wondered if anyone knew what this frame was ? Im assuming its a (no name) frame from the 80's, it has welds along the top tube for the rear brake cable & welds behind the crank housing which i assume are for a kick stand & the seat clamp is welded to the tube. Overall its in ok condition & i was thinking of removing the bits from the top tube & trying to get off the seat clamp & doing a kuwahara look alike if this was possible  as to the un trained eye i reckon it'll look ok.

Thanks for looking & I look forward to hearing from you before i start chopping it up ! (wouldn't want to destroy it if its anything decent!   As for the Rickman I'll keep you posted !

Well my first bmx was a chrome (Marlborough Zapper) Purchased from (Arnold's two wheelers) in Loughborough, as you do i started to update a few parts which all then got transferred on to the Rickman frame & Forks, i used to swap stuff around often trying to get a look that i liked but from memory when i sold it i think it had:

Cw Pro Bars (chrome)
dia compe Mx brakes 1000  (silver or blue ) with mx 2finger levers
SR stem silver Alloy which i swapped for a Suntour copy for some reason in (blue)
A'me tri Grips (blue)
Areoyal seat
Skyway tough II (white)
Michelin whitewall tyres
Alloy power disc  with a black chain ring which got changed for a blue one (might have also been made by SR)
Bear trap pedals....

Im gutted actually as i took a load of photos just before i sold it to Roller Snakes in Nottingham & i never had the film developed  :'(  they told me a local collector bought pretty much the same day i traded it in.

This one will stay white & blue & i'm ordering a lot of parts that i could never of afforded back then (kind of my dream bike without going silly )

White Skyway  tough II's (Blue tyres) can't seem to find any whitewalls with blue tread pattern any more???
Im trying to source some Rickman Bars but have something else that will look really nice if i cant get them.
A'me Round grips
Mx 100's with tech III levers (ALL WHITE)  or tech 77 levers  (got some en route from the u.s. They look quality & the right colour blue)
GT Stem (blue)
Redline flight crank Chrome arms with Tioga spider & sugino chainring (blue)
(VP) Bear trap pedals ? Again lets see what they look like when they arrive (blue)
Blue MX seat clamp
GT Layback seat post chrome
Kashimax aero seat (blue) ......... Was going to get a leather padded version (i think my arse would have appreciated that in my old age) but went for the cheaper option.
Tioga mx II headset...

Think thats about it really....    Got to be honest i'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it !

Nice, should look amazing!Glad you decided to leave the aeroyal seat out of the 2012 specsheet!Tyres are one of the biggest problems these days-getting hold of something that look right for sensible money is hard!I only ever remember seeing blue whitewalls on ammaco's!I would probably use the white tech 3's as they are era correct for the bike. You have done the same as i did, build the bike you had as a kid but with all the bits you couldn't afford then(and now sometimes!)What Flight cranks are you using?do you already have them?:daumenhoch: :Great_Britain:

Yeah the Aeroyal was a bit ugly ha-ha,  i'm putting Redline flight cranks on both my builds just bought 2 of them from this guy in the us on ebay:

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Redline-Flight-cranks-175mm-EURO-bottom-bracket-Chrome-EURO-BB-SET-/261131017563?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D3671998661228418214%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D261131017563%26

it seems a decent price even if i end up paying the import vat it's still cheaper than i've been able to find in the UK (euro bb comes with it too)!  The tyres i really want for the Rickman are Kenda whitewalls with blue tread (there's a DP ) in the museum with these on they look amazing. A friend of mine had these back in the day in his TRM & they look so much better if the bike has Blue as an accent rather than black. Ive actually bought savage freestyle tyres in Blue as they should look ok with the white Skyways (well i hope at least) to be honest the overdraft has taken a kicking this week but it's all in a good cause, better sell my soul on ebay to claw back some cash !

I was exactly the same!I was going to use the twin pinch Redlines like that,as i couldn't afford 80's 401's but i decided against it.It's kinda like putting new wheels on a classic car!I ended buying retro profiles, which looked better than the twin pinchers but bugged the fook out of me and i ended up selling them and i now have mint sugino opc on the bike, which i think looks right now just like bitd.Stick around, look at other builds and your owns starts to bug you!!I ended up swapping loads of bits i had originally put on just to get the bike more or less era correct and reproduction part free.Best thing to do is build the bike, ride it and enjoy it!I got too carried away with mine and it is just too nice to ride now!You can always swap bits just like we did bitd! Here is a couple of pics with the profiles on and with the opc as it is now :daumenhoch:P.S the gyro will be being removed soon!!Gotta love a British freestyler! :Great_Britain:

3 piece(and tech 77's!)

and one piece(and ACS locking levers)

Nice Rickman - you'll make some good friends on here with that for sure :4_17_5: :Great_Britain:

If those Flight cranks arrive with a threaded Euro BB and you need a larger US sized one give me a shout as I have a US and need a Euro.... :uglystupid2:

Some good points all round,

In terms of authenticity & being era correct, to be honest I'm not that concerned ( at this stage anyway ) who knows what the future might bring though ????

Parts are silly expensive in some cases & For me it's just about paying homage to the bike I once had, making it look (what is in my eyes looks cool as F**k) riding it ( a little) & maybe tweaking it here & there with whatever parts I can find. Then maybe move on to another build (or two).... ::)

One things for sure, i'm Looking forward to the experience & I guess that's what counts!

Ok we'll the dremmel is coming out in a bit & that cheap frame is getting what for !!!!!!!!!
