Title: The birth of basic bikes
Post by: christhejob on December 16, 2012, 07:50 PM

Pretty interesting video this, if you watch about 12 mins in darcy saccuci tells how he started basic bikes by buying standard frames direct from standard's first manufacturers in Iowa, and how he proceeded to piss Moliterno off with his marketing techniques. Pretty funny, even though I'm sbc for life, haha!

Cheers for sorting the link Danny. Things are good over in the east.. Must try & get butts with bikes to bse for a ride in 2013..

I like the pivotal bit too, I keep meaning to email MacNeil. They should do a pivotal seat base with 2 moulded hexagonal holes to slot an Allen key in.. Portable toolkit under the back of he seat...

Back to basic, standard ran an ad or put a piece in a catalogue listing all the faults with the frames from that manufacturer, which was their reasons for not taking them for sale as standards, darcy's take was nitchke telling him standard were too skint to pay for them...  Wonder where the truth lay????

both answers are the right answer chris but mainly bill blew the buck.

Krt told me bill wouldn't reinvest...   Then at one point Tim Quade came on board. He was entertaining. Also drove a mustang.

that's a great video.

the story i heard at the time was the chrome was bad on the frames, so standard rejected them.

Mid school for me is all about the stories and people... Getting a bit bored of the "what brake blocks do I run on a 93 slammer?" Threads, because the answer was simply "whatever you could find at the time!"  Stories boys, I want juice gossip dirt and anecdotes!

Ashley Charles was a right little sod when he was sponsored by Dirt Monster.

Thought I'd get the ball rolling  ;D

I went to visit Basic Bikes in 1997. It was cool. Very Mellow, not a great deal going on. In fact, it didnt really seem like a bike company at all. More like a bloke with a few bits in his garage that he was half trying to sell. But I guess the same could have been said for S&M in 1991.

Finally got to listen to this. It was cool  :daumenhoch:

Story time: My mate who I used to ride with all the time (and the reason I went to Basic bikes in 97) .... lived in Canada for a bit in the early 90s. Something happened and he "sold" his VW bus to Darcy, and came back to the UK. He'd often bring up how Darcy owed him the money for the VW but never did anything about it. Then, prob in the early 2000s, he found out that Darcy was now running Macniel so he phoned him up and called in his VW Debt. Darcy sent him a Ali Whitton frame, forks, bars, cranks, pretty much everything Macniel did at the time. Good on Darcy. Top man. And to close the story, it was the same VW bus that Darcy mentions in the Video, that he was driving home in when he decided to start Basic bikes.

Yep I had to testify. It sucked, apart from the generous travel expenses..
