Title: removing outer paint layers
Post by: antiquebmx on January 07, 2013, 11:20 AM
Hi

need some advice , I have an old frame which looks to have its original paint underneath 2 newer coats of paint

I tried briefly to remove just the outer layers of paint to leave the original, I used some white spirit. I only did a tiny bit of frame but looks like it will work but gonna be hard graft

Anyone done this successfully without too much hard work??

cheers  :)

I've used the new Nitromors (as it's sh1t) on a rag to remove overspray, just gotta be careful and take your time. It might take a bit of the 'sheen' off the original paint, but just Turtle Wax it afterwards  :daumenhoch:

My guess is if you cannot carefully pick off the paint then whatever you use to take it off it will damage the original finish to some degree, I wouldn't worry about taking off the original finish tbh, chances are it was painted over in the first place because it was rough...   ;)
