Title: Old Skool Rider starting up again
Post by: Trev on July 18, 2006, 11:31 PM
Hi there.  I'm new to this site.  Was told about it by Trill.  Trying to get back into riding after about 15/16 years out.
I used to ride in the UKBFA comps BITD.  Wanted to see if any of my old buddies are on here or knows where they are these days and if they're still riding.  I know a few of them are still riding.  I used to ride with so many different people from all over the country.  UKBFA comps, Southbank, Romford, Chingford.
I met up with Zach Shaw a couple of weeks ago at Urban Games.  Was good to see him again.
Still in touch with Gareth Swan (who used to ride with Karl Denton, Andy & Mark Reardon, Mike Cameron, Phil Bevan)

Carlo Griggs, Karl Denton, Andy Brown, Gerry Galley, Bubu, Scott Spencer, James White, Tim Goldie, Mike Canning, Brian Willis, Simon Tabron, Mike O'Connell, Effraim Catlow, Mark Atkins, Gary Henderson, Dave Young, Gary McCallion, Phil Dolan, Ollie Matthews, Fergus Heron, James Mulby, and probably hundreds more. will add when i remember who.

Riding is so much harder than i remember.  But then again i'm 15 years older and about 6 stone heavier.  I'm afraid the beer has turned me into a fat git.  Hopefully riding again will get me fit once more.

A  few of them are members on here :

Dave Young is yoda
Carlo Griggs is Carlo Griggs
Andy Brown is angry
Mike Canning is cumfug

Effraim Catlow can be found working at Southsea Skatepark, and Gerry Galley can be found ripping up his own ramp in a barn, amongst other places.

I rode at Rom myself bitd, and still do now, but it may have been before your time looking at the names you have put up.

I lived and still live in Orpington in Kent.
Local riders were Mark Trill from Bromley, Scott Spencer from Bexley and Tim Goldie from Pratt's Bottom.

Billy, I think i started competing just after you stopped.  I was in the same age group as Simon Tabron, Gareth Swan, Mike O'Connell, David Frame and the likes.

Managed to get copies of BMX Beat on DVD recently so been reminising about the old times.  God, how things have changed since then.

I was more of a flatland rider than a ramp rider back then (no local ramps at the time).  Now flatland has moved to a completely different level, i suck at it and as i was never a great ramp rider so i now suck at that too.  Just trying to get my bottle back at the mo.  I think i need to slam before i can start pushing myself again.  Once i lose the fear of crashing then hopefully i'll be okay.

Best you get over to Rom on a Sunday morning then, there are a few of us old gits that meet up there for a little bit of riding and a lot of talking and tea  :daumenhoch:
(not this Sunday though as its closed for a music jam)

I`m in Welling now but was from Plumstead.

I honestly can't remember what Mark use to ride.  I don't think it was a Trickstar though (maybe a GT???).  He's registered on here as trill.  He still rides now.  He goes everywhere, so no doubt you'd probably recognise him.

I'll assume there's only one Scott Spencer from Bexley who rides BMX....... if so, he's a co-owner of the Charlton indoor spine ramp  :)

Mike O'Connell is a miniramp ruler, sponsored in part i believe by Standard Bykes

Last I heard, James White had his own BMX parts and clothing company and still rides flat, Phil Dolan still rides also; at a very high level.

Mark Atkins, I seem to recall is a vert rider?  He's still about as well.

I rode with Ollie Mathews at my vert ramp back in the 90's, but I've not heard of him in recent years.

Anyways,......  see you at Rom   :)

i used to ride with gareth swan, karl denton, bevan etc back in wales and at bfa comps. what is gareth up to these days? i havent seen him since 1990. you should get him to sign on here

havent seen karl denton in an even longer time no idea what happened to him. phil bevan is doing alright for himself these days tho, motorbike racer and instructor and stuff.

gareth is working as a roofer. still in methyr.  got a couple of kids too. i haven't seen or heard from karl or any of the others for about 15 years either.  I think Gareth still sees them around now and again.

tell me about it.  all day at work i just keep on thinking i just want to ride and feel confident that i can do it and can't wait to leave the office.  as soon as get home and get the bike out the body has different ideas.
managed to pop out today and drop in. i know it's not much, but it feels like a milestone since i got back on a bike. onwards and upwards me thinks....

Wel done mate  :daumenhoch:  just take it a bit at a time I think the trouble starts when you try to take on too much all at once and ride like you used to straight away.
I think the youngsters call it nibbling ,but it saves your arse.

cheers fuzzynod. i know my competing days are long gone. any riding i do now is just for fun, so there is no real pressure. i'm just gonna take things as it comes.  just been looking at what i've typed.  how lame is it that i'm getting stoked at popping out. but it was the first time i'd tried it in about 16 years and it felt great. i can't believe i ever gave up riding. that has got to be my biggest ever regret.  the buzz i got when i popped out was the same buzz i got everytime i pulled a new trick for the first time in the 80's. i know there are so many tricks i am going to re-learn in the next few weeks / months and i'm sure i'm going to get the same buzz each time. i really can't wait to try and pull my next new trick. i am as excited now as i was 20 years ago. let the good times roll!!!!
