Title: Redline flight 401 help needed please
Post by: factory pilot on January 24, 2013, 08:37 PM
I have been potentially offered some nice redline 401 single pinch flight crank arms.....

1. What should I be paying for a nice set ?
2. Which ones are the earlist/rarest ?
3. What should I be paying for near a nos Redline chainwheel ?
4. Can I use a modern redline spindle and modern redline bottom bracket to fit them or will this be problematic ?

All help is greatly appreciated..am seeing the guy on Saturday and don't want to be mugged or ripped off 8)

cheers Antony

On here For just full wrap crank arms and BB £220  nice survivor to about £280  for minty and somewhere in between for re-chromed I'd say  :)

Late 80's early 90's half wrap between £150 and £200

Early rare pinchless cranks  anything between £300 and probably  £400

Early bubblefont chainwheel condition depending £30 upwards  for a 42T or 45T   to maybe £60 for a nice tidy 44T

Don't get me wrong you will see higher  prices being asked , but not selling  till

an offer being made or reduction  :)

400's on the other hand go for £350 and up ,

, even though BITD they were cheaper and were known to snap where the integral alloy spider meets the cro mo arm  :crazy2:

Mint or rechromed 401's £350 to £450 with BB and spindle
With techmatic BB add another £50-£100
With a mint bubble font chainwheel add £60-£100

Modern spindles for twin pinch flights will not fit as far as i know

Top info fellas  :4_17_5:

Really really appreciate it radsters :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I think he's asking £100 for the chainring which is as near nos as can be (42t) so I'll grab it.

not sure on the crank arms think he's got early and later ones so will memorise the info before I go  ;)

58delray....definitely the 19mm spindle and bb fit then ? .......great stuff if they do  8)

has anyone else fitted new spindles/bbs to old flights before ?......is it a piece of cake or will I have to bugger about a bit so they fit ?

cheers again to you all
Antony :)

Andy, I'm not doubting you mate, but I thought the single-pinch 401's didn't quite fit the new 6-spline 19mm spindles and BB's as the 6 "teeth" effectively were slightly different ???

Great news if they do fit though mate - you learn something new every day and the modern sealed BB's are available for change out of £15 all over ebay.

I bought a rough as a badger's ass set of 401's and full dimple spindle / BB off here a while ago for £220. They needed stripping, tidying, polishing and re-chroming but they were structurally perfect.

As for later ones, I've had several sets of single pinch half-wraps from £100 to £200 so make sure you are getting the original 80's 401's and not the later half-wraps..... still an awesome crank (I still ride two sets of them regularly) but they are worth considerably less.

Doesn't a Proline spindle have 19mm spline areas but step up to a 20mm bearing area on the spindle?

am now aware I need the 80s full wrap 401 cranks for sure...but not 100% convinced about the new bb/spindles fitting now  :tickedoff:

Can we get a confirmation otherwise I'll walk away and wait for a full matching set  ;)

I'm hoping you are right Andy as it'll save a whole heap of money/ball ache   :'(

anybody else put old with new on here ?

cheers Ant

You see 80's 401 BB's on their own come up now and then on Ebay  ::)

Sounds with those prices people have been paying too much .

The prices I quoted were from cranks I've seen sold in 2012 , so not old prices

Yep, agree with you 100% Chris. A £40 Butts chrome job would have made mine mintola again so total cost £260 :daumenhoch:

Good to know both these sets of facts if Andy doesn't come up trumps. I guess if you're patient you can eventually get (nearly)
everything for a good and proper price :4_17_5:
Will look at this guys' prices and the quality and make a decision.

ok heres the answer, 401 full wrap, single pinch flights do fit on a modern twin pinch spindle, i pulled two bikes apart this evening to try it  :LolLolLolLol:
here we have my assassin which runs modern twin pinch flights and spindle, the BB is profile but that doesnt make any difference, as it the same 19mm as a redline.
on the right is the twin pincher and on the left is the single, both on the same spindle, you can clearly see the modern type bolt as i didnt do it fully up for the photo  :daumenhoch:
