Title: Turning a yellowing seat.....White again?
Post by: GavinDavis on January 27, 2013, 10:12 AM
I read somewhere that it is possible to turn a white seat (that has yellowed) ....back to gleaming white again with the use of the sun/daylight?

Is this true as ive got one thats been in the window for a few days now and it hasnt really changed yet? lol.  Are there any other tips to get it back to its former glory?

Use bleach, but put Vaseline on the rails and keep your eye on it. :daumenhoch:

Yeah, just put the bleach on a small 'tester' area first, see how it performs. :daumenhoch:

Its a Dominator "style" seat.  I actually bought it off the bay last week for £6 inlcuding the postage and they'd listed it as a Dominator, which it isnt.  Its actually made by Hsin Cheng.

Rub Crest into the seat using your forehead.

The method your talking about with the sun is Hydrogen peroxide, water and and sunlight. Putting plastice in the sun on its own will cause fading and discolouration. You get hydrogen peroxide of the bay %35 food grade put 1/2 a litre in a clear container or glass container, top up with water and leave in the sunlight. Your seat will have bubbles all over it and when the bubbles stop, your seat will be white again (usually one to two days).
Here is a link from another forum about yellowed plastic :daumenhoch:

Trust me, they are all plastic nutters on that site :)

And to get any sun you will have to take it to the middle east which
could be costly  :D

Would this method work on coloured seats with fading?  As i have a NOS lavender Kashi with fading to the rear?

Thanks, Buz :daumenhoch:

The trouble with white seats is that the sun can damage it - it can turn it yellow in places - if it is only slight then you maybe able to save it ~ the sun penetrates into the plastic and can turn it yellow or fade it into some depth - aqua blasting may shift white mags but i don't think it will work so well (you never know so can try ?)
Coloured seat also fade with sunlight - scraping away deep enough may bring the colour back but getting the shape will not be easy
You can dye a seat as long as it has nylon and you know the make to dye well

bleaching a coloured seat may only take the colour out more - the lighter faded part will only bleach lighter than the other half and the same with dying - the light part may still be lighter after dying - but again you can try - it is a 50/50 try

cheers B  ;)

Seems an expensive way to go for a £6 seat made by Mr Miyagi's missus though  :D

I had a yellowed white kashi and just left it in a sunny spot (inside window ledge). It worked a treat :daumenhoch:
Took a while though, so don't expect anything to happen fast. Arnaud put me on to it, he's done a few.
No issues with chemicals eating the original decals either 8)

Okay slightly connected but slightly moving the thread at a tangent.....I need to make a yellow seat blue.....should I make it white with tippex then dye it with paper mate blue ink ? :LolLolLolLol:

No seriously is it possible to go yellow to blue via bleach and blue dye ?

Will I just fook up the seat ? What is the best way to  go?

This one is an easy one for a guru such as myself.

You've added an unnecessary step with the Tipp-Ex. You simply need to apply an even coat of biro (Bic is a good brand) and voila!

Alternatively if you're unsure you want blue why not apply a thin layer of blue tak then if you want to go back to yellow simply peel it off.

Thanks for reading.

Or....for that sometimes necessary snakeskin effect, simply buy a big fat snake....place the seat within its mouth.....take a run up and kick it hard down its throat.  Once at the desired stretch/coverage, simply cut off to suit....and glue  :LolLolLolLol:
