I bought a set of white Mike Buff Z Rims a few months ago from rad member dj-paul-c. They were in good nick, although the Mike Buff logo had been almost sanded/blasted out. I wanted to dye these blue for my adidas build that's also in the tech & resto section. A while ago, I posted up a question on how to dye Z rims. Thanks to Bendycat Eleventeen & Retrodan72 for their help and advice. Also thanks to Gaz rollin72 for his 'how to guide'. Retrodan kindly gave me a few tins of Madonna blue dylon, and I bought a few more to beef up the dye mix. Oh dear. Despite using salt and boiling water, the dye just would not take to the rims and left them a dirty lavender colour. I bleached them for 4 days, sanded them down using wet & dry paper, bought 5 packets of royal blue rit dye and 2 tubs of salt and here you are!
After sanding down with wet & dry

After 3 hours in the pot. I then rinsed with cold water, sprayed them with WD40, and applied acs stick on decals. I then went over the decals with clear lacquer to hopefully preserve them when they're ridden.

So don't use dylon. Rit is the way to go.
all built.

Thanks Dan. We'll see if it works. Aren't there stencils that you can buy to spray the logos on?

X2 They look great but nothing will preserve the logos if you use the brakes on them.even if they are stencilled,it is only paint and will rub straight off :daumenhoch:
-
I had the same quandary last year, I wanted a set of Zs to ride on my DP but also wanted logos on them. I asked about and listened to advice and it seemed that there was no way of preserving the logos on a rider. ::)
In the end, I saved up and got an identical set of wheels so that I have a show set and a rider set. :daumenhoch:

Great idea. That's something to think about. :daumenhoch:

Those have turned out really nice

Great idea. That's something to think about. :daumenhoch:
It's not the cheapest option, but you'll never lose your money in the long term and who can say that they wouldn't like 2 sets of Zs in there collection? :daumenhoch:

Maybe think about another colour combo as the elusive hub isn't showing its face.
How about white Suzue low flange loose balls with some blue adidas decals on, and some Asahi stainless spokes? Or even use your white spokes? ???
-
Or go for something completely different to the norm and use Suzue low flange hubs in red, with white spokes and red nippy's .....Might just add a little twist to the build :daumenhoch:

It looks as though i'll have to buy a nos pair from biagio. £50. Not too bad I supposes, as the dyno plate and the hutch decal that I didn't sell on here are currently selling on ebay. The Pro Star decal is already at £30+, so happy days :)

Nice work Andy, they look sweet :daumenhoch:
-
excellent job on the wheels :)

I was offered these z'ds and passed them up as I wanted to dye them blue, they looked too good to mess with them ???
-
Rims look real nice but dont lace with white spokes mate as it'll look like a Clowns bike :idiot2:
-
You should lace them with blue and white spokes,A third blue,a third white,a third blue,a third white and so on so you end up with a 3 spoke effect.would look cool :daumenhoch:

The sun is shining on them in the photo, making them look whiter than they were.

I thought all 'white' Z rims were an off white colour ???

They look great Andy, I would have replaced the ACS decals with Adidas ones of my build. :coolsmiley:

Royal Blue Rit. Got them off ebay, and used 5 packets to do these 2 rims. Took about 3 hours in total. I previously tried it using Dylon madonna blue dye, but it was a failure.

Thanks Dan, I thought about that too. I think as these are my first and only set of zeds, I wanted to put the correct logos on them. I may change them at some point (when they rub off!), and get some adidas ones made up. See you in Chester - hope you can still make it
-
I thought all 'white' Z rims were an off white colour ???
they did white rob, i have a set for my haro sport

I used 192mm spokes in a 3 cross pattern, but they were slightly too long on one wheel. 190's might be better. I bought rhe spokes and nipples on ebay from a seller based in Taiwan. Here's the listing for the spokes
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEWSONSPORTEC-CUSTOM-LENGTH-STAINLESS-14G-SPOKES-WHITE-COLOR-/170995046274?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d0195782
and the nipples
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEWSONSPORTEC-150-white-aluminum-spoke-nipples-for-bike-parts-16mm-/170996457860?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d02ee184
Basically, just contact them using the contact seller option and tell them how many spokes and nipples you need, and what length. They make the spokes to whatever length you want, and you can order how ever many you need. The same with the nipples. Ask for a price, and they will send you a paypal invoice. Postage was about £3, and they arrived in under a week. Excellent service, and I would recommend them

Hi, no I don't. I think the problem was that the small pots of dylon seem to contain less dye that a packet of rit, hence the concentration will be lower using dylon. I'm sure that dylon WILL work, but you'd have to buy a fair few pots of it. Madonna blue is the colour you want though. Personally I wouldn't use dylon again, plus it's becomming increasingly difficult to find the small pots as I think they have been discontinued. You can now only buy multi purpose dylon in large containers costing about £50. I would only use rit in future. You could use royal bue rit, just keep a close eye on how long you leave them in for so the shade dosn't go too dark. Or you could use aquamarine, but i don't know if that would be too light. Bear in mind that any colour will appear darker by a shade or two when the mags are wet. The colour will appear lighter once they have dried. Here's the rit colour chart
http://www.ritdye.com/store/
I buy my rit dye on ebay.

Have tried a few times to lace my own, but with varying results. Didn't want to mess these up, especially as the spokes & nipples came from Taiwan, so I took them to a local bike shop. They charged £40 to lace & true them, but is was worth it as they did a great job
