The 80's toy thread got me thinking about what make the bike would be in the paperboy arcade artwork. Obviously its an artists impression but i found this ad for Atari's promotion of the game. would make a cool little replica project i recon, especially if you could source an actual machine.
The big question is, what make is the bike? the closest i can get is a schwinn mag scrambler but the ad bike looks like it may have a lugged bb to downtube joint? :-\
What do you recon guys?

....looks like a Scorpion frame with Tange TX1200 forks to me. Givaways are the rear dropouts with skinny tubes going to them, the head tube looks like Scorpion to me with the indentation and the gusset looks the same too. :daumenhoch:
-
I did think of scorpion but not convinced the rear drops are right or the headtube is lugged :-\
-
I would say the Schwinn route is right, the bars are (or look like) Schwinn Sting bars.
As you say it isn't lugged so not a Scorpion.
-
Did Schwinn do a bb lugged frame does anyone know? It stands to reason the ad men would have used something fairly common/ chainstore bought
-
Wiki says Paperboy was out in 84 so maybe they used this

That Schwinn looks a good match. Find it! Build it! :)
-
not a clue as to what bike it is BUT what a fantastic idea for a build :daumenhoch:
-
yankie raleigh??

You might have to build 3. I've had a look and the one on the arcade cab is blue

And the one on the game / on some of the art work is all red

That Schwin does look the part though :daumenhoch:

Thought the same thing Gav :daumenhoch: Just been looking at white delivery bags for the bars too ;)

Thats gotta be a Scorpion, same gusset, same rear dropouts and you can see the lug by the BB.. :daumenhoch:
-
Definately a Scorpian :daumenhoch:

Sam, Meticulus has a set...
-
Still not convinced its a scorpion guys :-\ the scorpion has i mini looptail shape and the atari bike looks flat and angular. Also cant see a suggestion of the lugs where the top and down tubes meet the head tube? :-\
-
It's just a shite photo, that is definitely a Scorpion frame.

Got to agree with Si and others ;)
saved the pic and zoomed in to make sure :)
Great looking bike , will make a cool little project 8)
-
Deffo a Scorpion style frame HOWEVER CyclePro also used these frames supplied by Sentinal Cycles who owned Scorpion and the toolset was supplied by Tange who also supplied Apollo and Malvern Star so there are many variations of these about. Going by the headtube decal, the stem, lack of a coaster brakemy money wuld be on a CyclePro and not a Scorpion.
Also, Sam has Scorpion bars not the Schwinn.Wald style ones, my bad as I didn't look at the pic :-

Just emailed what i hope is the same guy in the ad. He was atari's VP of sales at the time so hopefully he may be able to help with the build :daumenhoch:
-
Wow the guy in the ad just got back to me ( from his boat in the med 8) ) and said he wouldn't know his arse from his elbow as to what the bike was :LolLolLolLol:
He did say he could put me on to a man who may know so will keep you all posted :daumenhoch:
-
:daumenhoch:
-
Ok this build is gathering pace now, just got off the phone with the same guy from the ad ( a vice president of Atari at the time and later Namco)
We got talking about arcades and stuff and he knew well the black cat in Towyn, north Wales where i blew most of my holiday money
:LolLolLolLol:
He thinks the bike probably belonged to one of the workers at Atari as most were keen sports types and he was one of the few who drove in ;D
Anyway, top bloke and he is going to send an email to the people who may know the full story on the bike. Will keep you all posted
-
:4_17_5: top research/borderline stalking there Clint
definitely gonna keep an eye on this :daumenhoch:
-
