Hey guys
New to the forum, looking forward to getting involved! Here's my latest project, a '95 GT Fueler that I picked up in London on Saturday morning.

Dropouts are tidy!

USA made :daumenhoch:
That's how it was when I picked it up. Plans are fairly simple: strip, clean and rebuild with some upgraded and standard spec parts:
Replace brakes with Dia Compe cantis.
Have extensions welded to the bars (they've been trimmed +- 1/2" each side
New (used) GT grips
GT 3pc USA (Profile) made 3pc cranks
GT 43 tooth CNC chain ring
GT Drop nose saddle
GT AA Pro tyres
GT Mohawk hubs - Ordered 2 April '13
GT DX style platform pedals
Fueler pad set (if I can find a pair, not hell bent on finding them though... would just be a nice optional add on)
New KMC chain
I'm in no rush, the plan is to have it done for MK13, but I'm fairly impatient... so it will more than likely be done sooner, provided I can source the right bits. I remember when I just started out racing, one of the local elite racers had one of these. He was the last one of two elite racing on flats, he also raced in jeans and out jumped all the other kooks! He also shredded his Fueler at the trails and skatepark. He is the inspiration behind this build, he kicked ass!
Here we go....

Lovely looking bike mate :daumenhoch:

looking awesome, even have the pretty rare 4 slot primo tenderizer pedals :daumenhoch:

Cheers! Yeah, the pedals are pretty cool. But sadly they're not 9/16", so they'll have to go.
-
cool, i do love a fueler :smitten: :smitten:
you dont see many usa made ones and yours looks clean :daumenhoch:
good luck with the padset, ive been keeping a eye out for 3 years with no luck

Thats a beauty Kev! :daumenhoch:
-
I sold my one to some scots lad on here
-
Looking forward to seeing this come together. :daumenhoch:
-
@ Kev - That looks great mate!
Right, I've ordered some of those 48h Super 7Xs from CRC, should arrive tomorrow or Thursday.
I also just ordered some 36h 10mm high flange Mohawk hubs off BMX Museum. I was originally after just the 48h hubs to rebuild the stock Rigida rims. But I'm a sucker for chrome, and when I saw the link to the CRC page, I jumped on a set. But 48h Mohawks are proving a little scarce in the sealed/high flange/10mm option. So I've ordered the 36s for now. I'll probably source 36h rims and shift the 48h 7Xs on. I actually would have built them as 36s myself in the 90s.
Oxalic acid crystals are also en route... bath time soon for the frame, forks and bars!
I'm also busy with arranging delivery on a Drop Nose Padded seat!
-
There was one of these on ebay last week, I was very tempted as I had one in the 90s 8)
Your's Looks good, these are nice bikes, the one on ebay didn't sell I might contact the seller >:D

Was a good price too :)

I chatted to midschooljon and he says the oxalic acid bath doesn't ruin the decals. My decals are not mint, but they're tidy enough to keep.
-
:daumenhoch: If anything else goes wrong, Jaymz might still be able to reconstruct them, I think. So keep the charred decals ;D

OA will not eat decals. Ive done loads of frames and never had any issues. Its a chemical reaction with the oxidised metal that causes the "acid" to break down the rust. It does not react with plastic or ink and as such has no effect on them. :daumenhoch:
-
Cool 8).
Hellchops, it's safe, you can carry on now :LolLolLolLol:
-
Some progress today...

The bars probably have the worst of the rust, looking forward to seeing the outcome.
Forks aren't too bad.
I have also ordered a drop nose padded seat and a 43t polished GT Overdrive chain ring. Both from BMX Museum.
-
Looking forward to see how it turns out. Frame and forks should come out like new.
-
Yeah that should turn out pretty mint judging by the existing rust :daumenhoch:
-
Bath time is over! Most of the rust is off, but there's still some where it was thick. Also, there is pitting left in certain areas. I expected this so I'm not disappointed. For a survivor build, I am quite pleased with today's result. I'm starting to get a feel for the cleaned up finish :coolsmiley:

Get some polish on it and it will take out most of that left over stuff. Most guys on here use Peek polish but any metal polish will do. I just use the Auto Glym metal polish you get at Halfords.

Are your bars uncut? What's the standard width?

That's come up well, it'll look nice when you've put it back together. :daumenhoch:
Them rear drop-out's look like they don't take no shit. :knuppel2:

Not yet. Haven't even been to the shops... ha ha! It's been GT85'd. So it won't corrode.
Loads more bits ordered off eBay and BMX museum.
Still after:
48h Mohawks or 36h Super 7X
Dia Compe cantis and a MX99
175mm GT cranks (or not >:D )
-
Did a bit of polishing today...

very nice :daumenhoch:

That turned out super good. Have you found someone to widen the bars yet?

Thanks guys!
Just won some cranks on eBay! Best bit is that I asked for a BIN and he declined... I was going to offer a bit more than I won them for :LolLolLolLol:
-

i like that :daumenhoch:
-
cool, i like that 8)

I had trouble sleeping last night, so I nipped into the garage and grabbed the Fueler stem for a bit of polishing. It's far from show quality, but I'm satsfied with the outcome for this survivor/rider build.

Post man just dropped this off! Fresh in from the States via rsrayray81 on BMX museum.

Stem cleaned up nicely. Its a bit risky, but if you feeling brave you can get a lighter and "burn" the scuff marks on the back of the seat. It wont remove them, but it takes off the lighter fluffy scratches and just helps tidy it up a bit. Might be worth a try if they bother you.

I did it to mine. Just use common sense. Slow gentle heat to the "fluffy" scuffed area should clean them up. Keep moving the flame and dont leave it over one spot, that will melt it. It doesn't work miracles though, so dont be tempted to apply too much heat to a single area.
-
My latest arrival. These are one of my favourite items for this bike. 175mm Profile made GT cranks were always an essential part of this build. Chuffed!
-
Those are solid cranks 8) Also seem good for a proper battering.
-
Granks look to be in decent shape. When you going to start putting this back together? You almost have everything you need now dont you?
-
I've been patiently waiting for some more bits to arrive. The latest to come in this morning are these:
36h 10mm axle flip flop Mohawk hubs ordered off BMX Museum, came in from Canada.
Some other bits which arrived over the last month or so...
NOS off eBay
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/n130/hellchops/IMG2489_zps08e7d2e2.jpg)
Won these on a UK eBay auction. Might strip them back to silver.
43t Overdrive chain ring from BMX Museum
I bb cups were red, I dipped them in caustic soda to remove the anodising.
All I need now are:
36h Super 7Xs in chrome
Dia Comp 985 cantis
MX 99 lever!
-
Post up a wanted ad for the missing bits. Im sure some folks on here will have what you need. :daumenhoch:
Cant wait to see this one built up again.
-
I dont think Hellchops has managed to get back on here since the crash (told me he hasnt received a confirmation mail since re-registering) so thought Id just post this up in here to keep it alive. I managed to find these few bits for his build and will hand them over to him when I see him next. With these he should be pretty much done.

Some OE spec 985 DC cantis with Original GT Kool Stop pads to replace the rubbish V brake.

It's been a while! The Fueler was 'built' ages ago, but after a some logging in issues and being preoccupied, I haven't been posting. The Fueler currently looks like this (except I now have silver GT pedals on it)

Since I bought this, I've been on the hunt for a decent set of Super 7Xs in 36h and I've finally found some! I have pair, laced to US made polished Mohawk hubs en route from the USA - buzzing! Tan walls were also always the preferred choice for this bike and I now have a pair of rainbow label Comp IIIs (1.75/2.125) that will go on the 7Xs. Lastly, I have an Izumi chain that'll be going on soon shortly. After that, it's be pretty much exactly what I want.
-
loving the way its been done

Thanks!
-
After looking for nearly three years, I finally got my hands on a decent set of 36h Super 7Xs to finish off my Fueler. I've also changed the black AA Pros for a staggered set of tan wall rainbow label Comp IIIs and fitted an Izumi chain in place of the cheaper KMC that was on it. I have some minor details to attend to, but this is pretty much spot on now. I must thank Jon Sherwood for helping source a few bits on this bike, and I owe Leigh Ramsdell and Greg Illingworth both a huge favour for getting these wheels to the UK (from Omaha via Raleigh NC and Cape Town!)
