Title: Metallic Paint?? Help
Post by: mawsatron on April 02, 2013, 08:19 PM
Im wanting to get a nice metallic ruby red on my mirra pro frame. Iv looked high and low for a decent metallic red but cant find anything that fits the bill. Theres a guy over on the museum who got this great stuff called dupli-color metalcast but as with most gear its only availible in the US. Im not entertaining the idea of powdercoating as iv used them a fair few times before on various frames and now fancy giving myself a challenge.
Any tips?? Links, etc?

Gracias.

I take it you want a rattle can in the desired colour?A local car paint specialist/bodyshop supplier should have a mountain of chips you can look through to select the desired shade and should be able to make it into an aerosol. If not i think halfords do this service now too.But as said before have a chat with SuperBikeDan on here as his powder/spray work is legendary. It's hardly worth spraying a frame yourself, even IF you achieve excellent results it is nowhere near as durable as powdercoat. :daumenhoch:

Try these people - based out of Bordon in Hampshire

They have Duplicolor Metalcast on their site. Im about to use some blue for brakes, pedals and stem top...

Seriously, try speaking to Superbikedan before you do anything. I've recently had a frame powdered by him and the quality is tops. Most places will treat your frame with industrious amounts of the stuff which looks pants and spoils a good frame but Dan is very sympathetic and you wont loose the weld detail or serial numbers. His prices are very keen too. I'm guessing that his Candy Red could be right up your street  :smitten:

Sounds like Dans the man when it comes to painting. His stuff is shit hot.
As i had said iv previously used 3rd partys when it comes to frame painting (and recived good results) but i really want to give it a bash myself and see what the result is.
I have access to a powder coater and oven at work but i think im going to research all my options and see if i can get a similar quality finish using basic products.
As they say, its all in the preperation.
And with it being paint it can always be stripped bare again.

Thanks for the advice and ill post some pics when i get a chance.
