Title: 1978 SE racing JU-6...
Post by: kungfunky on April 08, 2013, 11:05 PM
Some frames/bikes are classed as rare, some classed as desirable but very few are both, the JU-6 sit's right at the top of the tree when it comes to BMX frames that are highly sought after by the majority of serious collectors and I'm lucky enough to own one  :)

I've had this frame for a long time, almost 8 years now  8) (some bikes I like to keep in my own collection) and it's my pride and joy that I'll never sell. Like most JU's it was cracked at the head tube so I had it repaired. This was an obvious weakness and when the name was changed in 79  the front gusset was also added  :)
This has been on my office wall or in storage all the time I've had it and I've never seriously thought about building it up, and for now I won't either as it'll be going in a display case along with some chosen vintage SE memorabilia  :daumenhoch:

In short the JU-6 was designed by Scot Breithaupt in 1978 for pro rider Jeff Utterback, Stu was the number 1 rider but he already had the STR-1. The 6 came from Jeff's national ranking. After Jeff left SE to form GJS, Perry Kramer got the frame and a gusset was added then the name changed to become the PK Ripper. There were 2 types of JU-6 made, the Floval top tube like mine and the round top tube ( same top tube as my Round Tube Ripper).

Anyway here it is at long last out of hiding  :daumenhoch:

I guess it's the angle he's holding his as it also looks like the TT is much longer than mine, I've compared mine with others and talked in length with a friend in the states who ownes a round tube JU and they're exactly the same. I have seen a pic of one with diamond drop outs but I'm not 100% sure if it was a BD-III/DB IV rather than a JU, I'll try and find the pic  :daumenhoch:
