Title: Lost my way.....
Post by: Peanut on April 23, 2013, 03:32 PM
Ok, so I've got this 97 Vertigo, not the best but rides ok. I know it's mid school but want it to have an 80s feel, I've changed a lot of it over the years and now it's a bit of a hotch potch and I don't really know where to go with it from here. I recently changed the white mags for the tuff 3s as my white haro freestyle tyres had corroded (was going to get some more (£18 ten years ago now £180!!!!)  and the black tyres looked gay with white mags.

Any ideas what I could do to old-school it?? As I say, it's not the best but it's this or the silly banana shaped performer that weighs a ton.

You could get rid and get a real 80's freestyle whip or, failing that, get rid of that seat combo, the wheels and tyres, pull the bars back and replace with 80's parts bro  :daumenhoch:

you can have fun with a Vertigo... but if its not doing it for you then I'd go early 90s... Standard maybe... nice bikes and rideable too  :)

Firstly, sell the stem to fund some of the upgrades :daumenhoch:

You're gonna get plenty of useless stick, but I'd have to agree on changing the wheels to  spokes and better skinwall tyres which will set you back about £50 for wheels and £30-40 for tyres. At least it looks like it has Tech4 and 901 type brakes, so leave them. Change the post for a normal layback or straight post, pull the bars back and change the chainwheel for a spider and chainring for £20.

Finally spray it all one colour and chuck some repop decal on it should give it an o/s feel :daumenhoch:

The stem is about the only thing on it I like at the moment, is it worth much then???

The brakes are , if memory serves...odyssey system 2000. Managed to find some cheap gumwalls on ebay, think I might have some spokes in the workshop somewhere along with a spider and chainring. As for decals I haven't a clue what to use, not liking the mid school decals.

That Powerlite looks GREAT... right up my street.. making the best of what you have.

I'd stop worrying about this Vertigo and just have some fun with it... yeah it might cost a bit for new decals and stuff but get the rattle cans out and get on it - its worth it ... you CAN polish a turd  :LolLolLolLol:

Make that shiiit SHINE  :4_17_5:

Your not wrong there, my current project is just for a bit of fun, I like road biking but I'm not overly serious about it so decided to take a crappy raleigh and do something with it, sand down, remodel with some body filler, rattle cans....it's not looking too bad even if it's a tad on the heavy side, but for the hour and a half a week I get to go out and ride it'll do me.
