Title: 83 HARO Build Diary & Voyage of Discovery.FINISHED (((FOR NOW AT LEAST)))
Post by: Funkyworm on April 27, 2013, 02:31 PM
In the short time I’ve been back in to Bmx I’ve discovered a few things, the first is that  getting back in to the whole BMX thing was a complete accident. It happened as i managed to track down a Rickman Freestyler pre Christmas & having never even built up a bike before I decided to attempt to build what was my something similar to my childhood bike from scratch & here I am 6 months down the line with 8 bikes !

If i’m honest I when i was a kid I really wanted an Original Haro Freestyler (type 1 or 2 ) I mean who didnt really???? i t was Iconic right???? I just loved the whole invention of BMX Freestyle & the look of the bike, but a Haro? Na they were way out my parents price bracket & I’d never get one right ?????.....................................Until Now  ;)

30 years later & only a few weeks back I kept seeing a this Gen 2 on the bay, I ignored it moved on bought some more stuff & didn’t really think much of it apart from the fact it was silly money & it had been on there for weeks. Anyway it kept appearing & one day i decided to just contact the guy & before you know it i was in the car driving to London & cutting a deal saving me over 1/3 of the asking price !!!! Having said that the final price was still way more than I ever envisaged paying for some chromoly tubing & welds.

The chrome is good, way too good to re - chrome although it's wearing slightly thin on one of the twin top tubes. The decals were pretty poor so after some long hard thought & some soul searching I finally decided that the best thing for the bike would be to strip the decals give the Frame a really good going over with the autosol in an attempt to really get it to look as good as i could.

Then I added & the new decals from Frog BMX they took (3 bloody weeks to arrive).

Im now at the interesting part :

My second discovery since getting back involved in BMX is that generally prefer to build Frame Sets as opposed to building up a frames that originally came as part of a complete bike.

The reason for this i think is that with a frame set you seem to get more of an (artistic license) with the build & you can put more of your own interpretation & personality in to it, whereby with a latter theres always a pressure I guess to build up a replica model & any deviation from the original spec tends to attract from some quarters the occasional back handed comments similar to " Amazing build but personally i would"... Blah blah blah....Bollox. :tickedoff:

However since i started on the Haro I've found it a really difficult build, obviously as its an early bike & as sutch the parts list is more limited in terms or (era correctness). To be honest Ive never been a stickler for this quite anal approach but I do want to do the bike justice by at least still sticking to the original colour pallet on the decals . The last thing i wanted to build was yet (ANOTHER BOB HARO REPLICA) which has almost become a (Model) in itself but it's not one I've ever really liked the look of & I'm pretty bored of seeing them.  I know that Lee is planning one of these builds too & I totally respect the time effort & perseverance it will take to build that Iconic bike but it's just not for me.

Ive accrued some parts & really wanted to do something a little different & really enjoy the build rather than it be a labour of parts hunting. I have gone for the Vector Haro replica bars (as they just look right with the bike )  no one can say (Pull ya bars back with them) & I'm finding myself heading more towards a Mike Dominguez style ride at present .....

Time will tell, I have some white alloy hub Tuffs at the Aqua Blasters  so Ill be interested to see how these come out & I'll go from there but I'll update as I go along, I think I'll be sending some mx 1000's to the finishers for anodising in a dark blue or maybe even a custom green finish for a bit of a twist & I'll see where we go from there.  :daumenhoch:

Have just secured a Nos Suntour Seat Clamp to match the headlock & Chain wheel to the blue anno parts will match, just need to decide which way I go on the brakes & it's starting to take shape.

Wow, that looks like seconds before the big bang  ;D I wouldn't have the guts to peel off old decals, but the new ones seem to look alright  :daumenhoch:

Looking good but if you want to keep it as era correct as possible you can't use Sugino CT Cranks and Tech 4 levers.

Maybe a set of Redline Flights or even a 1 piece crank set up?

Good luck with the build though it will still look great whatever parts you end up using :daumenhoch:

Surprised you removed the decals, they looked ok... :crazy2:

If you've paid a fair bit for it then dont scrimp on the parts...take your time.

Hmmm not sure that's 100% correct mate, ??? ??? ???

Here's how i see it !

I don't know when the CT 175 came out but they were stock on the 84 Haro Master & as my frame is a December 83 production it would have been in the shops & sold in 84 so that crank would have been in the shops ! Also my tech 4's & 901's currently in the picture are stamped 1984 so If i used them they really are completely era correct.

It's just that as most of the imigary from the time features pictures of Bob Haro & his bike which was a (Gen1 1982) with MX 1000's so since then most people have put MX 1000's & Flight cranks on their Freestyler builds based off of this :daumenhoch:

Needed to mate, i wanted to bring up the frame as good as i could & the print was coming off of the decals where it had been cleaned over the years, I'm all for a survivor but I wanted this to look clean. The new decals are mint, cant tell the difference from the originals & the frame set looks transformed now its polished & has it's new colours.  :daumenhoch:

Just an opinion mate your build it's up to you use what ever parts you fancy :daumenhoch:

I think Sugino CT's are more towards the later part of 84 so are Tech 4's.

Ah totally, like i say I'm not too anal about era correctness I just like to build good looking bikes, besides back in the day we were always updating parts as they came out so this works for me just fine . I remember we were all getting rid of our MX 1000's & 900's in 84 when the 901 came out & then getting 880's in 85 for the front end.

I have mx 1000's to potentially anno in blue if i decide to use them I"ll have to do this as no one ever seems to want to sell these & I'm tired of advertising in the Wanted section so anodising Is the only option to potentially go down.

Got to admit I love the Ct's but it's work in progress & nothings confirmed up as yet ! :daumenhoch:

I will do, the guys said he had another set of white ones in last week that came up differently to mine, first time around he reckoned mine looked yellowish in parts once done & was going to give them another go, I guess the thing to remember with white is that they will all come up differently depending on how they have been stored  how dirty they are & how much UV they have been exposed to. I doubt they will come up brand new but im not expecting them to so if i'm not happy with them I'll dye em.

He'll have soda blasting in a few months so this might also be an option as it's not abrasive & works apparently because of a chemical reaction that takes place on impact to causing the cleaning .

Use proper DC brakes and show the other guy how it should be done.  Snide DCs on a Gen One is just wrong IMO anyway.

Not sure mate,

I'm definitely going to look at getting some made up problem is most places wont do tech 3's without removing the pins as I think they are steel it ruins the process apparently CCA in Barnoldswick seemed to have managed this just fine if you look at dancetothedrummersbeat's adidas build.

Problem is with CCA is they are fooooking annoying as they keep ducking in & our of doing BMX parts depending on how busy they are, people seem to be getting bits done there & every time I call they wont do my parts saying that they have too much on.
Anyway Ive found someone else but i'm just checking a few details on which parts are steel on levers as I don't want to have to remove the pins just the QR levers on the callipers should hopefully have to come off.

Imagine if Dan did that ??????

Definately do it your way buddy. Haro's and Haro replica builds have been done to death and when another pops up, for me anyway, it's "just another Haro build". Thats why I done my Haro the way I did.

My latest build is out there and built how I imagine a teen would have done back then, and myself   :coolsmiley:

Looks nice that.

How do the frog decals compare to the original ones in terms of colour ?

I'm no expert but honestly mate they are spot on & I wouldn't have known the difference, the colour reproduction is very good.It needs to be as Frog are bloody expensive, but you do get extra decals. the main tube decal went on first time no worries & easier than any other i've done so far, but that might be because they are like a foil based decal. The only slight difference i seem to remember is the tiny (TM) letters in the main tube are a slightly heavier type face (maybe its some kind of bleed) but it's so minor you wont se it..

The one thing i completely meant to do & then forgot to  :idiot2: was take a picture of them next to the originals but i bet someone has done that already. Saying that I would inagine any older decals would have some UV fade by now.

In the kit i got:

1 main tube decal
1 head tube decal
5 disk decals, giving you the option to sticker up the forks plus the seat post tube an then 2 extra I guess for a straight & Layback post i guess.

They also threw in 3-4 other haro stickers FOC.

I have got to sat i waited 2 weeks before contacting them & I got a snotty email saying how far thew are away from the uk & it had only been 2 weeks plus they had to print some. S I guess they are selling stuff that they dont actually have in stock as after i emailed them they got on it messaged me nack & I had them in 2 working days  :daumenhoch:

Funny thing is i'd had tyres sent from Australia & a seat from the USA sent over in the time it took these to arrive from France!!!  I guess you just need to keep on top of your order but i couldn't be happier & the bike looks transformed.

OK well in that case you I'm guessing that woudn't take your fella (Up Satan's Alley) using the same grease you use on you bike ! I'd assume you'd go with some premium lube

That's really nice, great job. If you would like an accurate set of repro decals, let me know. I have a couple of sets left from the anniversary freestyler project that were produced from a NOS Set. I can let them go for a reasonable cost.

OK UPDATE SO FAR :

so I scored some tuffs off the bay: They were pretty rough & not cheap:

I stripped these down & sent them off to Nick at the Aqua blast centre in Donny, postage for the round trip is around £24 TNT.

Nick had to have a go at them twice to bring them up to standard  (so the price went up)  but overall the job is good. Yes the tuffs are textured somewhat now but I actually don't mind the finish at all & also the hubs have been dulled down. Nick did try to cover the hubs to some degree but in the end this cover failed as he took a longer amount of time than normal on the wheels. Im not going to metal polish them as it's just too messy so I'm leaving them with the matt sheen which again I like so (bonus). :daumenhoch:

(Sorry for the i phone pics) but here's some images showing the aquablasted set next to a single new tuff to show you the difference. The thing to remember with white wheels  is they all come up differently with aqua blasting, this depends on how old & how dirty they are,  plus how much UV they have been exposed to in their life so I was never expecting miracles.

(http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af140/callum1971/1983%20Haro%20Freestyler/38f63391-2a2a-442f-a5ed-eaf4093730ef_zps57d1f241.jpg)(http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af140/callum1971/1983%20Haro%20Freestyler/null_zps82901755.jpg)

The tyres i have are Kenda K55's I managed to get 2 sets of these shipped over from Australia from a store that won't normally ship to the UK. After some persuasion I managed to talk them round & they are now willing to ship me more if i want them  :daumenhoch: I'm so glad they did as I love the way they look. Unfortunately postage from Australia is way more expensive than from America but I've not seen these tyres on sale there anyway (I'm guessing it's possibly an SMU ordered by the Australian distributor)  I know that Chen Shin also do these SMU'S  in the USA as I've bought 2 sets of white from over there. Either way for 2 sets of these plus the shipping it's less than half the price of 1 pair of Panaracers in the UK  :daumenhoch: Also Blue was a little more like Mike D's ride but i didn't want to use comp 3's a i cant stand them of freestyle bikes.

(http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af140/callum1971/1983%20Haro%20Freestyler/046f779c-b6c6-405d-9371-7e17846fe82d_zps9b163572.jpg)(http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af140/callum1971/1983%20Haro%20Freestyler/null_zpsb5d5699f.jpg)

Next up was choosing the pedals, I'd bought all kinds of different bear traps in Blue but wanted something a bit more authentic, I had an old set of Shimano dx pedals that were red in the garage (forgot to photograph them in their used state ) but i stripped them down replaced the 1/2 " Spindles  with 9/16 & painted them myself (got to be honest here I'M STOKED with the results), the colour match's perfectly with the other parts which I'll come on too later.

I decided to Keep the Sugino CT175's & wrap them in a 43t Blue Suntour Chain ring to match the Suntour Headlock & then I found a NOS Suntour Seatpost clamp & the colour matches  up just beautifully with the pedal colour so it all works really well as I hate too many shades of the same colout on a bike.

For the handlebars I've gone with are Haro Vector Replicas  (they look sooo right on this frame set)  & I went with the Oakley F! Grips that i bought from Eamon & he basically delivered them to me (Lovely bloke if you've not met him).

So to the brakes & callipers,  well for now as I have so much going on I'm sticking with the 1984 DC 901 & Tech 4 combo but I am having some mx 1000's & repop tech 3' Anno'd green to see what they look like.

As it was a sunny day on Friday I took the bike outside to take a couple of shots & added a white chain that I'd bought for another build (my intention was to have a blue chain) but I actually really like it once it was on.

So to my surprise there she was (Finished) well for now at least, need to drop the seat post a tad but here she is.  Dec 1983 Haro freestyler.

Normally i'd have a left hand rear brake (as per the UK highway code / cycling proficiency malarky)  but you cant do that with 901's as the cable enters the calliper on the same side as the lever (the left) this forces the rear cable to run down the left hand side of the bike making the cables look awkward as they don't cross over ,  hence the right hand rear brake (American way) Just dont tell me to pull my fooking bars back  :daumenhoch:

Nice one,Love it.Pedals look fantastic. The tuffs and tyres look ace too.If you are not worried too much about era correctness I would swap the calipers for 880's front and rear, then you can run a potts mod and have your levers the right way round  :daumenhoch:

Funny you should say that, the frame & forks are Dec 1983 so I wanted to keep it looking circa 84-85 (with a twist) I've actually got some 880 in blue that i got from from Spen but i think this is the wrong bike for a pot's mod to be honest.

Im just waiting for a couple of parts to arrive then & I'm sending off some mx 1000's for green anno !

Ah cool.the MX 1000's will be more in keeping with the bike and should look fantastic in green.i recently swapped from a rear 901 to an 880 for the same cable routing reasons.I think every freestyler should have a potts mod!!It represents the ingenuity and innovation which was going on at the time, especially in freestyle-As well as making the bike function much better for what it was intended for.Look forward to seeing this with the brakes  :daumenhoch:

I think for the 2 sets posted it was around £70-£90 inc taxes might actually have been a bit more  .

They also had red but had sold out of white, I was really interested to get some in green I know that Duro make them & they are available in Australia as well. It just seems that theres a demand out there & in the USA so the distributors can order the minimum quantities in order to get the colours made.
