Title: Pedal Axle Change to 3PC
Post by: Wayne Ryder on July 13, 2013, 01:16 PM
I know there's been mention on here of buying Halfords pedals for the axles, but that looks like it was specific to DXs. And they were probably in steel, not CRMO.
I've got some 90s Peregrine pedals for 1PC, need to know if there's a known source for a 3PC compatible CRMO axle that'll fit with minimum faff. My Basher's almost done, just needs the pedals sorting and I'm away.

I've mentioned this before I think - you can use DX type axles, but they need a trim normally. Check the ones side by side you've got, but from memory I've have to dremel off the top three threads on the DX axles to fit the Perrys. Thread a nut down before dremelling so it cleans the threads when you've dremelled though  :daumenhoch:

Thanks, matey. I do remember that, but I didn't know if it was a general rule or specific to one type/brand of pedal. Also, I can't afford to experiment, so it has to be right first time and doubly-sure to work. Plus, I'm carrying a bit more timber than when I was in my 20s, so they've got to support over 15 stone of bad rider (or Ryder, even).

Are there any that definitely won't work and shouldn't try?

Do they have to be alloy? These look likely candidates if not:

As Danny says the main issue is length of spindle and more importantly the length of the thread on the end of it. Some of these plastic pedals are 10-15mm wider then DX's, and as a result dont have enough thread to tighten down the cones once you have trimmed them. Best bet is to go into a halfords with you pedals and place them on top of the plastics so you have a rough idea if they will work.

don't go with the plastic pedals, i bought a set to switch the axles and they were too short. ended up buying halfords one's which fitted perfect. they were for dx pedals though, not sure about peregrines but more than likely they will fit.

If they're the same length as DX ones Rob, then they'll need a trim. Dunno though as never used Victors as a donor.

I'm not sure this is a do-er after all.

Inside the pedals, there are needle bearings at the inside end and a sealed cartridge at the other. The axle itself looks to be made for the job, (from memory) when I swapped some DX and SX axles & bodies a few years back they looked pretty different to these.
Fate wouldn't let me risk it in any case, Halfrauds had a woeful selection of pedals on display.

So, maybe this isn't gonna fly and I look to a really strong 1-piece instead. The one I took out feels a bit heavy and is probably just steel. Any suggestions?

Ahhh - sounds like you've got the sealed Perry peds then....what colour are the end caps on em?

End caps are alloy screw-ins, same stuff as the bodies.

Yep, they're the sealed version then - the unsealed come with black plaggy end caps.

No idea on an axle swap for em, as they need the correct (as you said) needle/sealed bearing axle.

Should be fine for the vast majority of us oldtimers.  ;)

They are chromo after all and a bit of thread lock would add a bit of piece of mind.
Apparently spacing out your pedals by 20mm or so is prefered by some road riders, they do 9/16 to 9/16 spacers with the same design as in the link  :daumenhoch:

As Clint said - they're up to the job on torque and that, but if you're going to take em ramp/jump where you'll land heavy on 'em (and not always in the middle of the pedal) then they will strip  :daumenhoch:

You got sealed or loose ball Perrys Gav? If they're loose ball just send them over to me and I'll convert them gratis  :daumenhoch: I've got a bab load of spare DX/DX-a-like axles for 3-piece here.
