Title: Re: A holy grail of restoration.... dying coloured wheels white (how to now up)
Post by: oldschoolace on August 01, 2013, 09:44 PM
Was over at a friends workshop today discussing a project i'm helping her with a week on saturday. She is a plastics expert and i'm always pissing around with her heatpress and other machinery trying odball things she rarely gets time to try. I got talking about the potential of pressing some plastic parts  ;) and asked her if she had much in the way of white plastic.
She specialises in recycled stuff and after showing me a huge bag of shredded 50 pound notes from the royal mint she will be embedding in clear acrylic
she showed me she stock of white stuff which wasn't alot and derived from fridge door liners.

Noting i didn't look too interested she said "you could always dye some other stuff white"

Well as you can imagine, this got my attention and as a favour to me she said she would order some stuff and i could pick it up on the sturday i'm working with her  :daumenhoch:

I'm fookin well excited. I dont have a great deal of info as yet but apparently most plastics as well as wood and fabric can be dyed with this stuff so keep your eye on this thread over the next few weeks as i will be doing some trials with mags, seats and owt else i can find  :4_17_5:

Going to do a yellow plastic seat first then a black Raleigh mag. They need cleaning thoroughly first before i can use the dye so the seat is an easier option to begin with  :daumenhoch:

Well here are the initial results. Quite impressed so far. Should be interesting to see how the black mag comes out.  :daumenhoch:

Title: Re: A holy grail of restoration.... dying coloured wheels white

What i am surprised at is it covered the quite heavy staining you can see on the original seat. It all looks even  :D

I'm not sure on the colour range but it may be possible to over dye the white?  :-\

I wont post a how to just yet, i want to make sure the stuff has actually took well and give it a bit of abuse with  keys, sandpaper etc  :daumenhoch:

Impatience got the better of me and although i should leave it 24 hours i couldn't help but piss around with it. Just gave it a good scrub with my house key, all it did was leave a metalic residue from the key  :daumenhoch:

Title: Re: A holy grail of restoration.... dying coloured wheels white
Post by: oldschoolace on August 08, 2013, 06:53 PM
More updates  :)

Not had chance to try any serious chemicals on it yet but i have just beat the hell out of the seat, bent the side (logo) sections as far back as i could, tried a newly cut yale key, hit it with a hammer and smacked it against the door frame of the shed..... the result.... a rather sorry looking but nether the less still white seat  :4_17_5:

It took a metalwork file to final make an impression and that was through filing half a millimetre or so of the seat away

This stuff seems to be the nuts  :daumenhoch:

Now the bad new.... i cant be arsed to spend most of the night cleaning and preping the black raleigh mag so that will have to wait til another day.
 :LolLolLolLol:

However, in the interest of experimentation i decided to give this a go  :daumenhoch:

Sounds like it's a winner then clint,if it's withstood that abuse a bit of light riding or sitting on a show bike ain't gonna do it no harm.

Right been for a potter in the shed and it looks like grips/rubber is a no go for this stuff  :buck2:
(should have read the directions closer)  :LolLolLolLol:

If anyone else wants a crack here is what you do  :daumenhoch:

First of all the part to be dyes must be REALLY clean. Use a kitchen cleaner that states it will remove grease and scrub it with a foamy scourer type thing. cillit bang is reccomended by the manufacturers

(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010882_zpseb901c1e.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/P1010882_zpseb901c1e.jpg.html)

The dye comes in spray form and a few super light coats are needed to get things going. Make sure whatever you are dying is bone dry.

(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010885_zpsfedf8690.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/P1010885_zpsfedf8690.jpg.html)

The dye dries in around 10 mins and another coat can be added then.
DO NOT be tempted to touch your lovely bmx part before the dye dries.
It works by slightly "melting" the surface layer of the plastic allowing the colour to take and "soak in " slightly. If you touch it you run the risk of leaving an imprint in the plastic.

(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010886_zpsb3d693c4.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/P1010886_zpsb3d693c4.jpg.html)

Once you have a good foundation you can apply one or two slightly heavier coats until the desired finished is achieved. These coats still need to be sparing, too much will cause the initial coats to bubble.
If you have done everything right you should get from something like this....

(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010884_zpsdf4444a4.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/P1010884_zpsdf4444a4.jpg.html)

...to this

(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010887_zps51b2dcd2.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/P1010887_zps51b2dcd2.jpg.html)

(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010890_zps92472b0a.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/P1010890_zps92472b0a.jpg.html)

I have done quite a bit of research since i got the dye and it seems if the instructions are followed to the letter really good results can be achieved. In one article i found a guy had dyed a load of lego pieces and the dye took really well, even on the sharp edges and corners  :daumenhoch:

The brand i used was

http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/vinyldye/

But i also found this company

http://www.vinyldye.co.uk/Brillo%20Vinyl%20Spray%20Dye%20White

My next step is to see if i can overdye the white as the colour palette is rather limited.
The dye i used finished semi satin, sort of a natural mag wheel finish but it can be buffed for a glossy finish  :daumenhoch:
This stuff certainly performed better than i expected on the seat and took plenty of abuse once it had cured. Its perfect for carpet queen and pub cruisers.

As soon as i get chance to dye a wheel i will bung up some pics and see how well it holds up to brake rub  :daumenhoch:

Just come across this thread and thought I would offer this up, We use stuff called Ritt dye on motorcross and enduro plastics, you can get it off eblag. You need a big tub and fill it with boiling water add the powder dye and then submerse the part you want to dye in it and leave it for 24 hours. after that take it out wash it down and heypresto job done. It stands up to the abuse of motorcross and enduro and it seems to penatrate all the way through the plastics. Im sure there are some videos on you tube
