Title: which is lighter half link chain or full link ?
Post by: Peter J on September 28, 2013, 07:24 PM
Apart from the "adjustment" factor is there any mechanical benefits ?

Half links weigh more I believe. I use both, and and one BMX I've got a single half link on a normal chain so the wheel sits just right in the dropouts

depends on the make of chain as the weights differ from company to company

personally weight/strength isnt something you want to compromise on when it comes to chains,  the only half link i trust is the shadow v2 chain, i had no probs with my old one and my friend abused his with no probs too

i now run a kmc k710 cool chain again not the lightest but strong and reliable (a shadow v2 chain pins runs too close to the hub shell on my gsport ratchet hub hence me using the kmc k710 chain)

After having a chain break at the Boardroom and spitting me over the bars, I dont care about chain weight and am using a Cult HD chain.  :daumenhoch:

Thats what I was thinking Kev/Gary

I see these hollow pin chains with cut out on the link and think  :uglystupid2:

Then there's the hollow half and full link.....which is still a bit worrying  ??? ???

on a chain I'd rather go for strength but then the strongest chain is not always the heaviest

I've read loads about half link is better and lighter and then full link is stronger yet lighter than half link.........................I lost  :'(

I'll answer before the pi$$ takers  :knuppel2:

At best a kick turn on a wooden ramp....99.9% of the time following my 6 year old daughter around the local "council" skate park

Have you...

I've never snapped one either Sid as I don't ride hard

My problem is "mass"

I was looking at different chains and I'm not a new school teckie by a long shot so thought I'd ask the masses  :4_17_5:

check the tensile strength of any chains you buy

ideally try and get one that's above 1300kgf

most £10+ chains should have a good tensile strength but best to check

also chain maintenance will help the chain live longer, for example try and keep the bike in warm dry conditions and if it gets wet wipe it over before putting the bike away

also once in a while give it a little lube with a dry lube like finish line dry lube, it goes on wet and soaks into the rollers and dries so wont leave any marks on clothes etc.....

I always go for the Shadow V2 half links, pricey, but never had an issue.  :daumenhoch:

Pete, if you are worried about weight, put the pork pie down....

Half links will stretch more due to the cranked side plates opening out.

cheap chains are just that. fine for watching them gather dust.

I, like you, enjoy my food, and have a bit of ballast behind me, but I have never snapped a chain, i've had one come apart because some tosser ( :loser:) didn't fit it properly.

Saying that, don'r scrimp. but theres no point in spending £30 when you are as good as us!!

Get your bloomin wallet out Pete. I split a fancy coloured oldschool chain at On Board and Jim oldfathertime was there to mock me big time. Hurt like a bugger and I ended up wrapped around the rails at the side of the flatbank.....

I run a heavyweight KMC or something now.

Just go chainless Pete. Lighter, no need to worry about strength and you will look really cool.  :daumenhoch:

Not a valid vimeo URL

Get Yourself a KMC Z510HX for around a tenner, or if it has to be a half-link chain get a Shadow V2  :daumenhoch:

Snapped fookin loads. Oddy Bluebird or similar - £20, no worries (unless you got one of them dodgy batches) comes with a half link in case you need it to slam your rear, and you don't need to shit yersen' about any snappage. Or have to get the caps replaced on your front teeth at £160 a pop every 12 months.

Pete, I'm no slim chicken, as has been advocated on here in the past  ;D , and I use KMC 510s chains on most of my bikes. I ride them all, including commuting, and use the Kuwi over the dirt jumps. I have not had one give out yet  :daumenhoch:
