I'm thinking of running a Browning 2 Speed on a JMC DY, has anyone ever installed one, ridden one or have anything to say about them?
-
We put one on rad mans jmc, looked cack tbh
-
Agree with Pete, looks stupid on a BMX in my opinion even if DY did run it.
Just my opinion though.
One just sold on EBay for only about £1200 I think but didn't hit the reserve. The bike was gorgeous apart from the 2 Speed set up.
-
Don't do it! Gears aren't BMX.
-
Bigplinky had one on a bike I think, dunno if he still has it :-\
-
I'm sure there's one on the museum at the moment still in the box $247.00.........

Do you have a link Bert?
-
I'm building a replica so looks are predefined, my understanding is that they're challenging to fit and run correctly...
-
Yeah they do look ridiculous & are/were unnecessary.
Good luck with the rep though. :daumenhoch:
-
All you boys obsessed with looks - did you ride BITD or just build stuff in recent years? ;)

Might have already gone, but worth a punt........

I seem to remember Sam running something similar on his "Huffy" ?.maybe.

Decent thread here on multi speed bmx :daumenhoch:

This is what I'm on about, I know Darrell Young experimented with it, i'll try to find a picture of him riding with it. If memory serves me right it was an all chrome JMC (if...)
I like the look of it - has an industrial look about it.

Found them (better than trying to build a bike from memory)

Cheers Clint
There were 2 DYs with Browning installed in that thread alone so there could be quite a few of them out there :-\

Listen to this then whilst looking at it-

go with your instinct Chris ... build it your way :daumenhoch: looking forward to seeing this done. :coolsmiley:

It's a fooking rep ya maniac!!
-
Chris , pm Andy ( bigplinky ) ;) . He had one fitted quite recently .
-
Yes I rode one that Andy ( Big Plinky) had fitted to his Maximum bike :)
Rode like a dream ,,silky smooth gear change . :smitten:
Yes they are another different and unconventional BMX component , but a bit of positve diversity in this hobby can't be bad
Personally I thought it was pretty cool and well made
and if you can build a DY with one , then props to you Chris for doing it just as the rider rode it :4_17_5:
-
Agreed. I say go for it. They're cool as you like
-
Had one fitted to my Maximum for a few years.
There are two versions: the first gen ones (like mine) have the barrel of the shifter set in a fixed position and are very tricky to set up as I had to shim the barrel to get the correct angle for it to work, The 2nd gen unit has a barrel with an adjustable angle which I would assume is much easier to set up.
When they work (90% of the time) they are very good and give a real advantage coming out of the gate for the first pedal, my technique has been to set it up to shift before getting the bike on the gate and then it will auto-change after 3/4 of a crank turn as you come out of the gate. I would imagine they would wear very quickly in mud and also clog up quickly for that matter.
The other things you need to set it up are an offset back wheel (I'm using a modified Suntour hub at present) and a chain tensioner (give me a shout if you need one I have some spare ones)

Has a much nicer DC cable stop on it now not the big Jubilee clip in the photo :crazy2:
Cheers
Andy
-
See, Andy's the man to talk to.
-
Apologies for the tardy response, i've been away.
Thanks for the replies - seems like the set up won't please the fashionistas.
I want to build the DY rep as a rider so I want something unconventional, interesting to build and better still exciting to ride and if its good enough for Darrell Young its good enough for me :)
I may well be picking your brains Andy, but this project is a slow burner. I know they need to be dialled right but tweaking for ultimate performance isn't really an issue, not with my hips! I'm assuming DY rode the first gen unit?
Chris

Sadly Chris, the guy has recently broken this down but you can see the Browning in situ here >> http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/jmc/60631

Nice, think its going to be my Bay ride :smitten:
-
Chris
Can't tell which unit is on DY's bike from those photos unfortunately (the one in the pictures below looks like a mark 1 but in black not silver so maybe a prototype?). If you have any problems give me a shout and I'll see if I've had the same ones and offer a solution.
A bit more info

I found this rather light reading especially towards the bottom

:LolLolLolLol: love a good formula me.
-
It's always nice to see a replica bike, and am looking forward to this one being done, BUT the 2 speed thingy looks awful in my opinion. It's just wrong. To me, bmx is single gear, no nonsense etc. Leave all that to mountain bikers and the like.
-
Why are so many people preoccupied with the looks? I'm building a rider :daumenhoch:

Personally, I appreciate the engineering. You'll have to post how it stacks up as a rider :daumenhoch:
-
From what i've read about it the change is almost unnoticeable, I think its a fascinating piece of BMX history. I remember seeing one BITD and really wanted to try it but i think attitudes towards BMX then are very different to today. Back then bikes for me were an amalgamation of individual parts that I wanted, I never really stood back and looked at the bike as a coherent whole, the DY rekindles that emotion - heck the seat doesn't match the grips!!!
-
I like mis-matching parts myself. A kid i knew bitd the day owned my dream bike, a skyway T/A. From what i can remember, the rear wheel was a black tuff, the front was orange, the seatpost yellow, and the seat blue. I loved it, and still do. I still don't think that bitd i would have liked a 2 speed device though, as that would scream 'chopper' or even worse, racer. I appreciate and understand your reasons for the replica build though. No offense intended on my part :)
-
None taken :)
For me I have 2 primary thoughts or reactions if you like. I've read a lot of "looks" related comments as I have 2 related threads going on, I have lots of bikes that adhere to the modern idea of old school building however I just don't remember discussing looks when I was riding BITD so I guess my reaction is that i'm even more determined to build with the Browning in an attempt to look at the bike through the same eyes I had as a youngster - if that makes sense? Just for this build… Then i'll be back to aligning my valve caps and tyre labels etc.
The other thing for me is that I grew up going to NBL meets, so Darrell Young is my Andy Ruffell so to speak :D
You should build that TA then perhaps my waffle might make sense :daumenhoch:

Thats the Shimano system, didn't they also fit that to a Hot Heart?

I think you've polluted my fragile mind........ the more I look at it the more it grows on me. Saying that though, I quite like that set up that uses two chain wheels, two sprockets etc in tandem........ or have I imagined that?
-
Build one Bert!!
That Hot Heart is lovely it'll be a fun challenge sourcing one with the "boomerang" gusset.
Show me a picture of said set up, i'm not entirely clear on what you're describing..
-
John De Bruin on museum also has the Browning on his DY, says shifts "like a dream" when set up properly. http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=237153 http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/25/jmcdy01.jpg/ ....all seem to have that Shimano derailleur/tensioner. THink it's called RD-MX 56
..some pics of it /the browning system on another DY rep on this oz thread here ->http://www.ozbmx.com.au/'showtopic=45993
