Title: 1999 GT Frame Project
Post by: Spudda on October 22, 2013, 01:17 AM
OK, moving away from the Welcome page, I've bought a 1999 GT Performer frame for £4.50 off ebay and blagged a set of ACS ZMAG wheels and tyres and a single crank

Its really to renew my youth after having a few bikes including a Redline which was stolen by force from my brother 18+ years ago  :-\

Spent this evening polishing the chrome and loosely fitted the wheels and will continue to work on it over the next few weeks/months

The wheels will probably go on to my sons bike as I dont know too much about them.

Just brakes, bars, stem, chain gear, pedals, sprockets and a saddle and I'll be there or there about

I am open to suggestions

That's what I'm saying - thank fook someones suggested putting proper wheels on late 90's GT and not just saying to slap mags on it.

I prefer the 2000 style decal, like the ones on the front end of the Tour2/moterbike hybrid you posted.

....the fork looks lil different from a 99 Performer ..? Not sure

Their is an etched GT on the lower forks but the hole in the forks for the brakes does appear to be close to the front wheel.   maybe theyre the wrong GT forks for the bike :-\

is there a 'how to fit a threadless gyro' thread on here or am I making it sound difficult ??

looking at these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-Odyssey-XL-Gyro-1-1-8-threadless-forks-vintage-old-school-bmx-/121197504333?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item1c37ef274d but I guess I still need the bearings

The forks are right for a 1999 Performer, not that I'm an expert or owt on GT's, but you can see they're a-ok in that catalogue.

Fitting a threadless gyro's is the same as fitting a 1" threaded one, just gotta make sure whatever stem you use it's got enough clearance (or is gyro friendly). Full instructions here:

I had a butchers - there's non in the UK selling separately that I could see. Not worth paying the extra to get em shipped into the UK when they come up fairly often.

Someone called Costa, who knows everything about GTs?
That wouldn't be our own resident GT expert named Costa would it? or GTNUMBER1

I suppose there could be another GT fanatic called Costa, but can't help thinking it's the same person
