Out of interest what do you consider more desirable ? Original finish and decals or fresh chrome/paint.
Yes it depends on condition etc but I'd much rather have original finish over something freshly done. I know plenty of folk still want their bikes to be perfect in every way which is great and they look awesome when built too, but I'm seeing a shift in what people are hunting for and could original finish be the next phase of building ? :)
I hope it is :4_17_5:

it definitely saves around £150 per build !

Was just about to start a similar thread about survivors. For me as nice as it is to see a pristine well restored example i think people are far too quick to go down that route. :yahoo_silent:
I love survivors and its the reason my decade never got the full treatment :smitten:

....and dont get me started on the dreaded white powder coating scurge! :knuppel2:
-
Original , I've done bling and shiny , new paint and perfect .
But I like the more original look now .. :daumenhoch:
My Squareback was a prime example .
-
ORIGINAL.
-
but where does a survivor become a wreck
i like survivor but there's a point where it looks sh1t
-
I guess that's down to the individual the same as some folk love things highly/overly polished.
-
there is a place for both :daumenhoch:
-
Yes there is but I think what ash is asking is what is your prefered option?
Original all day long for me :daumenhoch:
-
I've always preferred a survivor, in 15 years the only one I have had re-finished is my PK and that's only because it had been brush painted with emulsion.
Everything else has been a strip down, clean and re-build. I like them having some history and character.
But hey, each to their own, I like nos builds as well and some stuff has to be repaired and rebuilt before in can be useable.
-
I would have liked original paint on my ripper, but seeing as it already had some of the paint taken off it so phil could repair it, off it went to SBD ;)
But I had it painted, not powdered so before long it will have my own history chipped out of it :teef:
-
A bit of rust, pitting and scrapes all day long for me now Ash! Throw em in the boot, ride em too without any worries. :daumenhoch:
-
Original survivor on the frames, forks, bars, stems, crank etc but I do like a NOS brake set, chainrings, grips etc :daumenhoch:
I can't stand polished to death items or bikes built that are all polished/chrome with just coloured grips, seat and tyres "nono"
-
Originos.
-
Original if the bike/frame isn't too far gone :daumenhoch:
-
I like original finish, nothing like a clean up and put together. As long as its not to far gone.
Although I do like a refinished frame and NOS parts for show.
-
It's interesting and good to see folk swinging towards original.
Bit of a shame more original decal and finish bikes don't make it far in BOTM/Year. Think I'll enter one next month :4_17_5:
-
After doing the airzone I said I'd not do another survivor, I love the idea of keeping a f+f og but
It takes a fair bit of work to get the look & sometimes the result doesn't show in the build & I wonder if the effort was worth it. With new powder & nice bits the end result has more of an impact & people comment on the fact that it's so nice. Think alot of people veiw survivors as just an old rusty bike regardless of it's history/rarity or sentimental value.
PHEW!!! anyway after that I'm of to play with my air uni survivor build now :uglystupid2:
-
Battle scar show the love of being used :slayer:
-
og
-
Could the shift be due to NOS and mint parts being overpriced? Much cheaper to buy used and go for the survivor look.
Much quicker to source parts as well.
-
I like og finish where possible . I got a few like that and parts . I only restore when its 2 far gone these days . By Badlander is og Chrome . It's a bit far gone in places but I would never rechrome her cos she looks great as is .

I f8nd it harder to find suitable survivor bits than minty fookers......
They've g9t to be just r8ght to suit whatever you're doingd too ruff & yiu restore them they don't look right & too minty your fooked too

It seems so many people tend to appreciate the OG finish......yet soooo many more people are kicking out minters that have been repowdered/polished/chromed??
So how many of you that have said they prefer original finish....have kicked out a refinished one?
-
original were possible. and no matter if bought nos , original , or refurbed ... all get ridden. :daumenhoch:
-
I hate to sit on the fence but to me it depends on what type of build you are aiming for and what you personally want to see and how you feel about the build if that makes sense.
-
If I can pick up a minty'ish' OG finish then I'll leave it so. If I can't, then I'll look at pics of bikes of the guys who have...and I'll refinish my scores to a standard that I'm happy with, without worrying about what other people think is the correct thing to do. I wouldn't powder coat a lovely ball-burnished PK, or a nice chrome TA but I would rechrome a rusty Pro Class or Supergoose.

I'm in this hobby for the absolute beauty of the nostalgia of my youth. When I was a kid, what I really really wanted was a really cool brand new BMX that was shiny and fresh from the shop. I didn't want one that looked 2nd hand and had scratches and peeling decals.
Nothing has changed since my childhood.
