Hi,
I'm new to the site and have just bought a '85 GT Pro Performer FF to build up and being a little wet behind the ears to all things not 'Burner' maybe someone could answer the following questions?
I want to build the bike with era correct parts but am not sure what style of parts I should fit in certain places.
What DC brake levers and caliper models would've been used circa '85? 900s? 901s? Tech 3s? Tech 4s?
Also, what GT seat clamp style was correct? I've seen some that look a little hexagonal in shape, like a large machined 'nut' and others which are like a recessed band with holes machines in round the circumference. What would be correct?
Many thanks.
Andy

You need to speak to Steven Costa aka GTNumber1
look him up on the members list :daumenhoch:

Welcome Andy
just in case you have'nt seen the museum yet ->http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/gt_bicycles/?year=1985&model=158 .......many give a parts rundown to their bikes
...aand at least here's the 1986 Pro Performer (later ones, too..)

Am I correct in saying that these bikes were often bought as a bare frame and forts when new and then owners put their own choice of hardware on them?
Looking through the BMXmuseum there seems to be a plethora of differing hardware specs.
Is it a case of anything goes as long as it;s quality and era correct?
For example, some of the literature I've seen shows them new with SR chainrings, yet many have Tuf-Necks, Suginos, GTs etc...

Both I would say.
In short, its your bike build it how you want.

That's cool, but being new to this, I'd hate to build a lemon that was worth less in the future if I ever decided to sell it because I'd put the 'wrong' bits on.
I'm on a steep learning curve! "help"
Cheers.

Just build it how you want and dont think about what its worth in the future :daumenhoch:
Its what its means to you :daumenhoch:
You might and probably will, change your mind and parts as you go along :daumenhoch:
Good luck with the build, then get some pics up :daumenhoch:
Loads of ideas for builds colourway etc and info on here enjoy :daumenhoch:

^^exactly like.
Still i'd search for the 1985 cat. just as a 'zero'.
Bet we can find that ;)

Sor far I've got the F&F, a NOS set of GT Performer bars and a NOS GT Layback.
White Tuff IIs are a dead cert, as is a Kashi Aero - albeit a new one.
'Most' of the Pro GTs seem to have front loader GT stems which seems reasonable.
So really, the items up for discussion are:-
Brake levers,
Brake calipers,
Crank
Chain ring.
Grips
Seat post clamp
The crank is pretty easy as the Cr-Mo OPC are fairly generic between brands from what I can see, whether they be Sugino, SR etc.
So really we're talking about the rest of the list.
Some seem to have the 1000's but weren't they superseded by '85?
Here's a question, are the modern reproduction MX1000 brake sets and Tech 3's frowned upon for not being the real '80's deal, or are the accepted and embraced?

and to your last question. some say so, some say so ---- a Londonhellboy would turn around and walk away, a Funkyworm however would probably say ....okay. But as other's said, what makes YOU think yeo loookin right

Sorry dude, struggling to see the pics on my small screen - I take it they're 1000's?

Here's my 85 World Tour. Some bits are a bit either way age wise but it's built how I want it and I don't care what anybody else thinks! "nono"

Lovely bikes chaps. I hope mine turns out anywhere near as nice. 8)
My plan is chrome post/bars, white frame/forks/tuffs and black/white/chrome everything else.

-
Well that's the brake calipers sorted - just scored a NOS set of MX1000s
I also stumbled across a NOS 'Hollow' SR Cr-Mo OPC, all stamped up and perfect. :)

there ya go - anything goes ;D ;)

Been looking around and the GT seems to be a bike that attracts BITSA builds, which is cool I guess.
As long as it's all good stuff. :)
Over the moon with the hollow crank.

the onlt thing i would change on this bike would be the cranks for a set of single pinch and pedals maybe some suntour beartraps
-
Quick question peeps...
My GT PP has come already fitted with a Tange 125 headset which I believe is a decent bit of kit?
Only problem is that it's branded 'Haro'
What am I best doing - keeping the Tange (Haro) or fitting one of those Mori Epochs?
-
Great looking bikes!
Wondering if I should fit centralisers to the MX1000's or not?
Also, myframe came with a Haro branded Tange 125 headset - do I keep it or replace it with an Epoch?
If i go for an Epoch, are the Mori NOS ones that have just hit the market any good?
Cant seem to find an early GT Epoch for love nor money.
I know the Tange 125 is nice, but heing Haro branded and all....
??
-
With the headset - some peeps have problems fitting them Mori Epoch (->http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,143740.msg1404399.html), but if Funky would use one on his Vector, can't be bad. So up to preference again. - But if you don't like em keep your eyes peeled on the museum, too - there was a gt set sold just this morning, still pending even...
Wondering if I should fit centralisers to the MX1000's or not?
...........
i don't know - centralisers or not.............................. .. :-\ someone else please answer this
