Title: Lacing Peregrine 48h, The spirit of manliness…..
Post by: sprocket on December 29, 2013, 02:25 PM
The day have come to explore the limits. I have never laced a wheel. Today, being a nice quiet day at home, was the day to outdo my self, or not. After having a quick  smoke outside visualising the process and some random stuff , then briefly considering and logically rejecting the idea of looking for a build guide in internet, I was ready to start.

Victims: Peregrine 48h Semi pros, Araya 7x, 183mm spokes.
Witnesses: A wife
Admirers: 8 years old

An hour later:
I am happy to report, it all went very smooth and with great feel of satisfaction. No broken nails or bleeding limbs. 8 years old is now convinced I am mechanic slash God. I personally feel that I have withot a doubt added couple of years of life after a very tranquil and Zen like experience.

Now for the result itself. I am far from convinced this is correct. I am not planning to true them my self, however this just doesn't look right:

They look to me as they are laced 3x (i.e. each spoke goes over the top of 2 spokes and under 1 before the nipple), try them 4x (over 3 and under 1) and see how it looks then.

Other than the 3x/4x issue (which we have all done when lacing), that is a fooking ace first attempt at a wheel build  :4_17_5: :daumenhoch:

does this mean every other spoke will go to the other "side" of the rim. I mean, as the holes in the rim are offset to the center?

No they will still go to the offset one just further round the rim which will take away that excess of spoke.

good first attempt, now strip them and start again. build them 4x and make sure the valve hole isn't in between where the spokes cross.  :daumenhoch:

Thanks, 4x worked like a charm. However the spirit is not dead   :bellend: The valve hole IS in between where the spokes cross. Why is it important? It is a weaker spot that way? More difficult for the pump?

I think why that is because putting air in the tyre may prove difficult getting the tyre pressure gauge in there

WHS^^^

Spokes should angle away from the valve hole, makes blowing the tyres up a ball ache otherwise

Almost there.. But turn rim two spoke holes - either direction. If you got spoke cross over above valve hole then the spokes are in the wrong holes.. And you will damage the nipples! Also I would be surprised if 183mm will be long enough to lace 4X

www.ozbmx.com.au : "Peregrine Speedline 48 Hoop, Peregrine Loose-ball High Flange Hubs, 4x, tall nipples, 184mm.. "

183 seems to be working though? Off coarse, wheel is not tight yet and I'm not sure i am using "tall nipples". did i just said tall nipples

Have they been tightened yet? Can I see threads from the spokes?

Looks like you might just get away with 4X, You may end up with a little bit of thread showing once tightened? I have identical set up with 184mm laced 3X. Problem is you still have spoke cross over above valve hole so need to rotate rim two holes around. If you look very closely at the holes you will find that not only are they handed but they are angled out of the dome to point to either side of the hub (side on). The nipples are being bent over the wrong way out of hole in pics. Apart from that they look right!! Hope this helps

More than half the thread left. Nipples are just lightly screwed on ( 3 turns each ). Great info on the holes direction. I was looking at that and wondering if that makes any difference. Thanks for the help guys. I will give it a go again after NY

Always start with the 1st spoke going in the hole on the right hand side of the valve hole :)

But apart from that, good work  :daumenhoch:

i always start with the first hole to the left of the valve hole, and if it's a rear hub the drive side should be facing down when you start.

That is a great first time effort :daumenhoch:

I struggled like Fook and couldn't do it, but I found some p1ssed up bloke on a deck chair at MK one year who did it for me. :daumenhoch:
