Title: 14T freewheel removal help please
Post by: mamadirt on January 03, 2014, 07:07 PM
Wanting to replace my Dicta 14T freewheel with a 13T Ody so bought a Park Tool FR-8 freewheel remover (http://www.parktool.com/product/freewheel-remover-fr-8).

Problem is that it is a whisker away from fitting either the Dicta or the Odyssey  >:(  - the prongs on the tool seem just a tad too big.  Can anyone help please?

hammer and chisel usually works, expect to lose some skin off your knuckles though.

Pretty sure the Oddy one is a custom removal tool. I use them and my lbs has the right remover so the just spin off.

You not got a decnt bike shop to try before you resort to the skinandknuckleremoval method using a hammer etc?

I found there are so many variants of tool available, there will be a tool for it, it's just finding one.

:)  Could be wrong but fairly sure the the Odyssey 13T freewheel needs a specific tool. The Dicta 14T freewheel takes a 30 mm 4 pin removal tool but I have used a 30 mm 2 pin removal tool with no problems, cost about £6 from Bankrupt Bike Parts on E-Bay.

Cheers all!  I have to say that the Park FR-8 is nearer to fitting the Ody than the Dicta but all's good now.  A bit of persuasion and brute force from papadirt and a big ass hammer  ;)  has the Dicta off and an uphill ride to the shops tightened up the Ody nicely.  Anyone want to buy an unused FR-8  ;D

sorry- only just saw this, but I had the exact same problem.
I put my park tool in a vice and filed a smidgen off each corner, only took 5 minutes.
