Okay guys, where do I start. This is a first for me, treading into unknown territory but, I really really liked the look of this frame and had to get it and build it. I have been dabbling into Mid school magazines and getting a feel for the parts availability and what was on offer but I really would like some input into this with a few small items please.
I have the frame, fork, cranks, pedals, stem, bars, seat clamp, grips, rims, hubs, tyres, brake, lever, seat, post etc...erm, that's nearly all of it I guess then :D ;D Basically, I would like to know what headsets were available in 1994 that would suit this build please, obviously 1" threaded :daumenhoch:
I am not building this to spec, just to how I like the parts and what is available to me. I do not have the Kastan fork, unfortunately, as they are like rocking horse poo and didn't want to run a Uni blade so, I have chosen the GT Pro series fork, which looking through a lot of mags, even some other pro riders were putting them on their frames back then.
I have never really done a start to finish build thread before so again, this is another first. I will update as the build goes along guys and hope you like :)
Okay, now for some pics.
1994 full cro-mo Kastan Pro frame, original chrome and decals.

mmmmmmmmmm :smitten: :smitten:
its mid school headset would have been various bits cobbled together from all the Tange ones you had in 80's when they were cheap :daumenhoch: :LolLolLolLol:
-
Bloody lovely ^"^
-
Thats nice 8)
GT FSA is what you need 8) :daumenhoch:
-
fsa yup :daumenhoch: what was the one with angled roller bearings ? nice machining on the cups i remember ? hard to find i bet ?

These are awesome bikes. :smitten:
-
this is gonna be a lovely build Terry :daumenhoch:
-
that's gorgeous... looking forward to seeing this done .
-
Drool..... "wantit"
Very tasty indeed. I ran a gt epoch at that time because it worked.
Not strictly mid but a case of "if it aint broke..."
I suppose that if you were buying a kastan around '94 then you probably had a good idea about things, and would be in a position to afford a decent New headset!
-
Thanks guys ;) This was steal to be honest and came up just at the right time :coolsmiley:
Is the FSA headset the one referred to as 'the pig', or am I getting mixed up here :D
Fishy baby, thanks for the links. $108 for that headset though is shocking :uglystupid2:
-

unsure if the pigs were around at the time ? fsa pig is the one with the oversized bottom cup google the name loads of images , probs one of the best loose ball hs, keep em tight though or the top bearing race will destroy itself, the pro version has sealed lower bearing and angular top bearing i think, still available , price seems to have gone up though they used to be cheap, the local scooter shop has em up at £50 :idiot2: :idiot2:

Pig is 1 1/8, and I think he is after a 1". :daumenhoch:
-
oh missed that bit :-[ , to busy looking at the shiny :LolLolLolLol:
thought the 94's were all 1 1/8, unless they had them oddball kastan pro? forks 1 1/8 bottom with a 1" top
-
stick an epoch on it Terry.
-
the kastan kex frames were made the same time as the gen1 condors (IIRC) good to see rear drops still look as sexy as the earlier ones, awesome frame dude, nearly got one of these a few years ago, great choice :daumenhoch:
-
Nice frame Terry :)
-
Lovely Terry :daumenhoch:
Rond used to do a frikkin spot on needle bearing headset made from thick alu for racing. Had one on a bike for three years that I used for street as well and it didn't fook up. I'd (imho) avoid Dynatrons as they're a bit poo (they come loose).
And yeah - The Pig was slightly later.
-
Nice that terry
-
Love Kastans....These squarebacks are so nice..
On the headset tip, Odyssey Pro's are good..Needle bearings and came in a few anodized colours, with a headlock... :daumenhoch:
-
Hmmm...I have been at work most of the day so came home and actually measured the head tube. It is 34mm diameter. I tried my Tioga BT II in there and it, well, doesn't fit of course.
Need help here now guys as the seller told me it was definately 1", and it's not :yahoo_silent:
Pissed, yes, because I have bought the damned fork for it :2gunsfiring_v1:
So what headset do I need and can I get one for a 1" threaded fork ???
-
Terry I have one of these with the forks.... I'm 99% the forks are 1" non-threaded
The head has skims to take and 1" headset or without it will take 1" 1/8, I think that was the case but I will check tomorrow.
Bru :daumenhoch:
Thanks Bru. If that is the case, could I not just buy a 1 1/8 threaded headset? Would that fit a 1" fork?
Sounds dumb but new to this malarky :D ;D
-
You may have one of the frames that took a 1" cup at the top and a 1 1/8" at the bottom...Sounds weird, but Kastan did make some 'transition' frames and forks that took a regular shafted stem on top, yet had a thicker crown I think..
Did you check top and bottom measurements? If they're the same, it maybe 1 1/8" all the way, which could work out easier in the long run..( Apart from the GT forks..)
-
I have just measured the interior diameter of the top and bottom of the head tube and it comes to 33.5/34mm. Is that 1 1/8?
If so, Jon has found some reducer shims on the bay which will enable to carry on as planned :daumenhoch:
-
Sweet,sweet frame Tel :daumenhoch:
Love owt Kastan, the uni blade fork and hub set up with the 4 piece bars is just mentally cool :smitten:
I'll be keeping an eye on this :coolsmiley:
-
If they're both the same, and too baggy for the beartrap, then it's a 1 1/8" frame..You could use 1" threaded forks using a regular headset with shims if your set on using 1" threaded forks..
I went through the same thing last year after being sold a 1 1/8" frame as a 1", but I've opted for the 1 1/8 route.. :)
-
so it was the frame that was machined for the different headset cups ........ cool i thought the headset race and machining on the forks was where the adaption was made , learn somat new every day :daumenhoch: only saw one bit90's and that was well battered by a Barnsley street monkey ;D
defo with Dubber though looking forward to seeing this one

No and Yes
1 1/8" = 28.6mm but 34mm is the correct head tube inner diameter for a 1 1/8" threadless set up.
Minor set back :daumenhoch:

Shims ordered buddy and I will be using my genuine BT II for now. I'm going to try and track down an Odyssey Pro headset but not at the stupid money like the one on US Ebay :D
These are my fork options. Going with the GT because the Eagle claw drops and the welding is superb :daumenhoch:

Terry,
Have a look at this article about Winnie Wright RIP. He was riding a Kastan in the mid 90's before he had the Pashley.

Right guys. I got hassle here :yahoo_silent:
My head tube inside diameter is 34mm (give or take),
a standard headset cup for 1" fork is 32.7mm.
I fitted these shims and tried to fit the headset but it wouldn't, so I measured the inside diameter of the shim and it is 30mm (give or take).
Is a 'mini' headset cup 30mm ??? If so, then that is what these shims are for and I am back to the drawing board :(
-
Road bike 1" headset cups are 30mm
-
Std cup 1 1/8 headsets are 34mm at insertion point
-
Thanks Si. Would you know where I can get some shims, 1 1/8 to 32.7mm ???
-

Once you have the right headset,It's the steerer that needs a shim isn't it, 1" - 1 1/8"?

Or might you be better with an 1 1/8 fork?

No, that's going the other way round. I need to reduce my 34mm headtube to accept a 32.7mm headset cup. Maybe a Uni seat post shim would do the trick? It needs to be approx .5mm to 1mm thick.
My mate in the US has the headset that came off this frame but the lower cup has a crack in it.
As I have already bought the fork, headset and stem for this, I didn't want to go down the route of having to buy more and try and sell what I have, if that makes sense :-\
-
What about these?

I have emailed them Si to see what they come up with :daumenhoch:
Thanks for the link.

Oh man....If you're going to ride it I reckon 1 1/8 is they way to go..Embrace the future!!
1. You can't go wrong with LG's:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SE-Racing-20-inch-Landing-Gear-Forks-1-1-8-Brand-NEW-Special-offer-5-Colours-/121135067047?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&var=&hash=item1c34366fa7
2. Problem solver?
I think the Odyssey Pro headsets were mini sized with a shim supplied for regular headtubes( 1"), so they could work with your fatter shim?
Or:

Did something just go missing while I was typing that? ???

Oh man....If you're going to ride it I reckon 1 1/8 is they way to go..Embrace the future!!
I know what you're saying bro. I would like to go that avenue at some point but already having the fork and stem, this little build will start to get very expensive to build :(
I have never liked landing gear fork to be honest, fat tubing with frail looking drops, and I am looking to keep this as era correct, 1994, as possible. Maybe an S&M fork or a later GT fork??
I have picked up an Odyssey Pro headset, NOS, but it is making it's usual route from seller to my mate in the US, then to me, due to over inflated postage charges by the seller ::)
-
Why no go for some Answer forks or maybe S&M Pitchforks.
-
Why no go for some Answer forks or maybe S&M Pitchforks.
Basically J, I am stuck to be honest. I have a GT Pro series fork and GT elite stem for it. To go in the 1 1/8 direction, I will have to get another fork, headset and stem, and then try to sell what I have :(
I did look at the Answer fork and tried to get hold of some, to no avail but do prefer the rigid fork. Pitch fork are era but again, still the head tube issue.
-
I feel somewhat responsible for giving you the heads up on the shims.
I see you options as in order of lowest to highest cost.
1. A combination of road bike cups with bear trap bearing races and lock nut.
2. Road bike head set as used by VDC's back in the day.
3. Custom made shims so you can use a BMX head set.
4. 1 1/8 forks, headset and stem.
Option 3 might be as cheap or even cheaper than option 2 depending on what it costs to get the shims made.
-
I feel somewhat responsible for giving you the heads up on the shims.
:knuppel2: ;D
Going to go with this Tange headset. It will fit the shims and is sealed bearings :daumenhoch:
Will be here Friday so I can actually get the fork, stem, bars and maybe cranks fitted :)

Reckon that's the way to go :daumenhoch:
With the bodging modifications this a proper project.
Just think how easy life is now, BITD you have had to fold a coke can over a few times to make a shim then beat the cups in with a hammer.

Nice frameset Terry , love that squareback rear end 8)

Thanks Joffy ;)
When the guy posted it for sale on the Museum a few months back, he had it paired with a God awful fork and I just had to rescue it. I love chrome, especially survivor, and when the original decals are still applied, it's even betterer :smitten:
Spent the last couple of months familiarising myself with 93 and 94 parts as I know getting hold of Kastan gear is expensive and very very hard :(

Looking good Terry.. :daumenhoch:

Nice project there Terry :daumenhoch:
So, what's with the jump to midschool? O/S just not rocking your boat anymore?
