Title: GT frame and forks, which model?
Post by: Rojo on January 04, 2014, 12:18 PM
Hi there

Please bare with me this is my first proper bmx, I bought this of Facebook and was told its a 1996 GT Vertigo. Is this right??

Going to be my first bmx build I am used to mtb's but never had a bmx, apart from a Raleigh wildcat when young.

Like I say I am clueless when comes to bmx so sorry if ask basic questions.

Anyone got any info on this frame and forks ? A catalogue pic would be great.

Pic's

The decals shouldnt be too difficult to get hold of, luckily mine was a really nice survivor that was already complete so I didnt have to search for any.  Ive got a pic on my phone I think? Ill try and dig it out :)

Cool thanks be great to see a photo of yours.

Got some tuff wheels on way and guy has included some extra bars, grips and pedals, which is very kind of him.

Not sure what parts I need to get and which best to use.

Wowww very nice that!!!!

Is it the top GT model?

Looks to have different brake setup on yours to mine

On my Performer that rear brake cable guide is on the downtube which leads down to a 990 brake.  Yours is on the underneat of the top tube which defines it as a Vertigo :) .  I cant remember if the Vertigo was a full Chromo frame or just a certain number of tubes that were Chromo?

The top model was the Pro freestyle tour team model i think?  :daumenhoch:

Oh I see so ones with the cable guide on the down tube are better models?

How many different models were there in 1996?
Title: Re: GT frame and forks, which model?
Post by: GavinDavis on January 04, 2014, 01:21 PM
The Performer was a higher spec model in the range throughout all of the years.  I know that the Performer was a full chromo model so it may be the case that Vertigo was Trimoly? When I bought mine new in 95/96 (not the one I have now unfortunately) the performer cost me £250.....the Vertigo on the other hand was about £220 as a complete.

So the performer was £250 for just frame? And vertigo was £220 complete bmx.

Sorry that probably sounded as though that was the case but those prices were both for complete bikes  :daumenhoch:
Title: Re: GT frame and forks, which model?
Post by: Rojo on January 04, 2014, 01:42 PM
I see not too much different price wise then  8)

One thing that confuses me with bmx are the headsets, because brakes go through them or something.

Front cable goes through a hollow bolt in the stem and the rear cables are divided with a Gyro around the headset  :daumenhoch:

The headset that youve got is fine....it looks as though it was used without a gyro though if that is how you bought it?

If you want to run a gyro then you will need to undo the headset and then knock the top cup out in order to fit the cable tab section.  Put it all together again and you will probably find that you can ditch the silver spacer that is underneath the locking nut  :daumenhoch:

Headset came like this with the frame, so it is a incomplete headset that I have?

It confuses me because used to mtb set ups

The headset youve got will be complete, you just need to buy a gyro for it thats all :)

the vertigo and performer are both trimoly  not full 4130 chromoly going by the 95 catalouge

http://www.flickr.com/photos/82701205@N04/7575851638/lightbox/

it seems they dont mention this in the 96 catalouge and just say they feature chromoly tubing, not saying full 4130 chromoly

just like they say built in the usa, frame, fork and parts are made in Taiwan, then the bike is assembled in the usa

where as only the top models i.e the fueler, pro freestyle tour, cruiser  etc.. are genuinely made in the usa

So will need gyro to run rear brake?

...you don't HAVE to have a gyro at all - only if you want to do awesome tricks :LolLolLolLol:
Title: Re: GT frame and forks, which model?
Post by: kev-s on January 04, 2014, 03:03 PM
trimoly tubing is weaker, basically only the top tube and downtube are full 4130 chromoly the rest is made of a milder steel

not a problem for the kind of action it will see now but back when new trimoly bikes were crap and bent, broke easily due to the weaker tubing used and the style of riding at the time.

even full 4130 chromoly bikes broke with enough abuse but the trimoly ones didnt last 5 mins in the right hands >:D >:D

Yeah thats it......

I think GT and probably other manufacturers would put a 4130 sticker on the seat tube when in reality it was only the seat tube that was 4130.

the first 2 are mine, the pro freestyle is just a pic i got of the museum

that was relatively cheap!! gt were a big company back then but  the quality wasnt that good, a complete bike for that price wasnt going to last but it was better than some of the other completes out there

i paid £550 for my standard sta frame and fork back in 94, add another £200 for peregrine super pro wheels, £200 for profile cranks and your nearly at 1k and still need bars, stem, saddle, post, seat clamp, seat, tyres. pegs, gyro, brakes, levers, grips, pedals, freewheel, chain etc...

a good bike wasnt cheap but it would last!!!!

Not cheap hobbies are they, I thought bmx would be cheaper than mtb but they are right up there price wise with them.

Like your pro series looks nice and the fueler.

What other bikes you got?

cheers, got around 9 bmx's in total inc various s&m's, standard sta, zima, gt etc... aswell as a couple of road bikes and a mtb

retro 90's mtb's are soo much cheaper to buy/collect than 90's bmx's

here's my 1992 specialized hardrock ultra, top model of the entry level range, paid £55 for it

(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/1003/escrs/bikes/hardrock_zps10786fa7.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/escrs/media/bikes/hardrock_zps10786fa7.jpg.html)

thinking about collecting 70's and 80's road bikes aswell but seriously running out of room :LolLolLolLol:
