Title: Redline flight crank BB advice needed please!
Post by: factory pilot on January 16, 2014, 11:51 PM
I know the more technically minded Radsters may scorn my limited knowledge
(yes I know I'm a sad loser  :loser:) but can anyone confirm for me that the repop Profile bottom brackets will fit/work with my 80's flight crank.....I'm guessing they do but don't want to fork out the pennies if I'm wrong on this one.

I've seen these on US ebay (Alans had some but have sold out :( )

Many thanks in advance to the more technically minded of you out there... :4_17_5:

cheers Ant

Cant remember what the answer was in the past over weather the new spindles will fit the old crank arms or not.
If they do then yes you can with one of the new spindles.
Those bb's won't work with the dimpled threaded spindles that the 401's originally came with though.
For the dimpled one's your looking at Hadley, suntour or the redline techmatic. (Joe from hong kong does the repro techmatics in anodized colours though which look pretty good)

Like Glynn said, it pretty much depends on your spindle.

If it has a thread on the spindle then no, if it doesn't and there are 6 splines either end then yes.

Piccy of your spindle ????

Andy and Glynn are of course correct mate :coolsmiley:

But as I was confusing folk the other day, don't forget your old US made cranks will be imperial and the new spindle metric, so you need a new BB to go with the spindle as the 0.05mm will make a difference in the spindle diameter and will not fit.

Post a pic up of what you have and we can give you a definite answer :daumenhoch:

Hi guys I'm without means of taking a photo at the mo' so I'll do my best to describe what I'm looking at.......

the spindle has 6 splines on either side
the centre of the spindle is smooth with two small sections of thread at either side just before the ends where the splines are....

just found this exact picture......

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i236/citypets/48_1_b.jpg

that is the exact flight set, spindle  and bottom bracket I have ...I think it's a 1981 set?

I hope this helps.....I'm now terribly confused as on looking at it , it's obviously not a sealed bb at all....?

If I can get the profile to work it will look the mutts!
Otherwise is this loose ball set up acceptable if I cleaned it up for a 82/83 build ?

many thanks again....this part of a build always gives me headaches! :crazy2:

cheers Ant.....very confused now :uglystupid2:

The profile set up won't work with that spindle.
I can't find the pics of the repro techmstics that joe6187 does to show you but if you want gold & sealed I think he's your only hope with that spindle.
Your options are looseball or what put in my 1st post.
You could pm joe on here or on the bmxmuseum.

Bloody Hell....just checked out the thread.....$165.00 plus post...I think that counts me out  :'(
They are lovely though... just a thought but I've seen these on fleabay......

I run a new 6 spline axle through a new sealed BB on mine.
I have single pinch half wraps.
It works.
The imperial threads remain as there is no change to their status; HOWEVER, I have new metric bolts that go into the axle (they come with it).
They cost pennies compared.

That seems high Ant but bear in mind that the axle is cromo and heat treated, the bolt set is titanium and the cups have been CNC'd precisely with the retaining spring still in use to stop the bearings, just like the originals.

Joe does do some fantastic gear with top class workmanship  :daumenhoch:

The full kit totals £100  :)

So you need one of these.

Some these.

This would enable you to use the profile bb you linked to with your crank
Adding these & the profile bb up takes it to £75 shipped.
