This year has carried on where last left off with work and i have hardly any time to blow my nose let alone do anything bmx related.
As an antidote i have decided to give myself a little lunchbreak project to break up the day.
The wood neck bike rack was fun so another stem project seems to be the order of the day. With this in mind the first thing to do is find a donor stem shaft.
I have used those cheap suntour copy stems, off the bay, with great success in the past but with the supply of them drying up Bert was kind enough to send me one for nowt ( thanks again Bert :daumenhoch: )
First up is carefully cutting a slot in the back of the stem just shy of going through to the shaft then prying the slot open to release the shaft :)
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_00611461438297_zps045969d8.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_00611461438297_zps045969d8.jpg.html)
Next i ordered some 6082 aluminium off the bay, These two pieces are 2 inch wide, 3/4 inch thick and were cut to 100mm long.
They cost around £8 for both :daumenhoch:
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0058-806868082_zpscf317e07.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0058-806868082_zpscf317e07.jpg.html)
Will keep updating this thread as the stem comes on but thats it for the first lunchbreak :LolLolLolLol:
-
Ooh I love a thread like this, keep up the good work. :daumenhoch:
-
I already prefer the stem in the bottom picture
-
Will keep an eye on this, nice one Clint :daumenhoch:

Early pre patent tuf neck........
-
I'm not giving the game away me old chum, been waiting to see how this is gonna look
-
So realising i need a new 7mm drill bit i thought i would have a quick look round the usual places last night to save me driving round everywhere. Gutted is all i can say!!!
Turns out screwfix had a computer glitch yesterday morning and EVERYTHING online was priced at £34.99!
Bobbins if you only want a drill bit but some fookers were buying garden rooms originally at £3.5k and ride on lawn mowers at £1500
Would have been so nice to restock the workshop, they honoured it all too :'(
-
Must be nice to have time for a lunch break Clint :LolLolLolLol: looking forward to seeing your next update
:4_17_5:
-
Alright our kid :daumenhoch:
Got to be done mate, back to 7 days a week again and all work and no play makes Clint a grumpy bugger :LolLolLolLol:
-
Did this on cad a while ago :daumenhoch:
(http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp160/andyrooski/tufneckstem.jpg) (http://s407.photobucket.com/user/andyrooski/media/tufneckstem.jpg.html)
Don't think it will catch on though :D
-
Cool, did you get it made up?
-
Cool, did you get it made up?
Nah, I only make parts for old stems, not repoops, your one off project looks pretty cool 8)
-
:coolsmiley: I did this 4 my Mason Smith freestyle stem :daumenhoch: took fricken hours and hours tho :-\
-
Any pics of it Steve? :)

Nice :4_17_5:
Particularly like the bevels, they look really considered :daumenhoch:
-
Day 2 on the project and potential disaster averted :)
I have always suspected my cheap looking new vice was slightly untrue so decided to test it before i started drilling any important holes. Sure enough it was out a fair way from base to bed and as the base is easier to access i set about it with the disc sander >:D
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0064-1606635739_zps368838f4.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0064-1606635739_zps368838f4.jpg.html)
The polished looking bits are my efforts and the deep grooves are the original finish. ( It looked like Stevie Wonder had been at it with an axe ;D )
-
Clever chap, I'd have just gone at it & ended up with wonky holes :LolLolLolLol:
-
Clint, stop dicking about with stems & get cracking on me table. And kitchen. :-*
-
:LolLolLolLol: yes boss
-
he just wants to see you in a toolbelt Clint ^"^
-
Think you might have a point there, had me fooking about moving a shelf a few inches last week ??? :LolLolLolLol:
-
I like the way you drill things!
-
Day 3 on the project and got a fair bit done :)
Drilled the bolt holes in the top cap ready for tapping
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0070-1029557234_zpsef695d59.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0070-1029557234_zpsef695d59.jpg.html)
Drilled and countersunk the body for the bolt heads
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0072-2108609745_zps022eb627.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0072-2108609745_zps022eb627.jpg.html)
Next Big Birtha made an appearance for the stem shaft
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0073-806868082_zpse943cd5d.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0073-806868082_zpse943cd5d.jpg.html)
Stem shaft offered up (not knocked it yet)
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_00751461438297_zpsc9999ab1.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_00751461438297_zpsc9999ab1.jpg.html)
Big day tomorrow, got to pair the two pieces together and drill the hole for the bars :)
-
Had to work a little late to wait for a delivery so cracked on with the pilot hole for the bars :)
Note the piece of mountboard between the two pieces. Hopefully this will give me just enough space to nip the pieces up around the bars leaving an almost seamless gap
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_00761461438297_zps10a49ddc.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_00761461438297_zps10a49ddc.jpg.html)
-
Looking good ;)
-
Just though i would add that i'm not using any fancy machinery for this project, just a 15 year old b&q benchtop pillar drill and the cheapest vice i could find in machine mart. (about 8 quid)
No reason why other radsters couldn't have a go :daumenhoch:
-
I struggle putting shelves up
-
Is it staying a big square lump clint ???
-
I struggle putting shelves up
You say that Mat but i'm still convinced its a ploy to get me over there :-*
-
Is it staying a big square lump clint ???
No mate far from it ;)
-
Suppose I'm gonna have to wait n see how you shape it then :D
-
Great thread this :daumenhoch:
-
This looks great so far Clint! Fair play mate! :daumenhoch:
-
Likeing the look of this. :daumenhoch:
My only concern would be the seamless look, Would be OK on a carpet queen, But wouldn't fancy riding it.
-
So with the drill bit in place it dawned on me that the little pillar drill may struggle removing so much material and a good quality hole saw would be a much better option.
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0078936154384_zpsd41f1434.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0078936154384_zpsd41f1434.jpg.html)
Nevertheless i pressed on and just took my time with it. :)
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/DSC_0080-185766776_zps3b0848f0.jpg) (http://s1182.photobucket.com/user/oldschoolace/media/DSC_0080-185766776_zps3b0848f0.jpg.html)
It took around 25 mins :LolLolLolLol:
-
Fantastic :daumenhoch:
-

was thinking the same thing - won't there need to be a little gap so you can clamp down on the bars better?
looks ace flush, but can see the bars slipping if the 2 parts of the stem are completely flush...???
-
At the moment there is a gap of around 2.5mm between them. if it needs to be bigger I can file one of the internal faces but looking to have an almost seamless gap once installed on a bike :D
-
Easier to see the gap in these shots :daumenhoch:

I know you like your engineering, I'm not sure how these work, Will have to watch the video later.

-
Cool, yeah have seen that. :daumenhoch:
Had a similar thought myself a while back then they turned up with that. Glad i didn't persue my idea now as i believe it took them a few prototypes to get it right :)
-
Coming along nice clint
-
Good work Clint
-
Good stuff dude, get some Paraffin on there next time, best stuff when cutting Aluminium!

Cool.thread Clint .. :daumenhoch:

Cheers guys :daumenhoch:
Good stuff dude, get some Paraffin on there next time, best stuff when cutting Aluminium!
I looking into cutting fluids and alot of the yank references were talking about using kerosene.
Used the missus sewing machine oil in the end which seemed to work well ;D
Bollocks!, just though while typing this, i have about 2 gallons of paraffin in the shed from the days of the allotment green house heater.
-
Nice work Clint, you've got skills fella :4_17_5:
-
Excellent work again Clint. :daumenhoch:
-
The dreaded tax return and a couple of customers got in the way of progress today :(
Still managed to square off the bottom of the bolt countersinks and drill the top cap to house a Potts mod bolt head ;)

Great thread this :)

lovin this thread... this is where my back ground lies-engineering. I'd have a bash, but I blew the motor up on my bench drill, but can't find anywhere to repair it down in south Oxfordshire. I so want to re create the Hutch stem on the 83 Pro Star.
-
Whats up with the motor captain? I knew a lad who got one fixed at a alternator renovating place.
-
Awesome skills, love it.. :4_17_5:
-

dirty great white flash, coupled with a huge bang !
-
Hmmm that dont sound good.
Can you not get an off the peg motor that will fit like Machine mart stock or is it integral to the machine?
What make is it?

Try these bro. Speak to Mick Robson or Devon Francis and say Terry has put you onto them. I used to rewind motors for them back in the 90's :daumenhoch:

no idea on make of drill or motor... used to belong to my ex girlfriend's dad.. keen to get it sorted, as I know this sucker is sooo accurate(he's a tool maker)
-
If its anyway half decent ( unlike my B&Q special :LolLolLolLol: ) its worth getting sorted properly.
Looks like Terry has come up with the goods once again :daumenhoch:
-
WELL worth sorting. Lets put it this way.. if you google "joseph merlin band clock".. he made one of these on it... won 1st @ the model engineers exhibition back in the late 80's
-
Bloody Hell thats impressive 8)
What are you waiting for fella, get the bloody thing fixed :daumenhoch:

It's about half way there and I'm aiming for something between a Cinelli and a Tioga rs2 stem :)
-
Fook me clint, thats well cool.
What rasp you use ???

his rasp is his manly 5o'clock shadow :LolLolLolLol:
-
:LolLolLolLol: tis true I havnt shaved for years :LolLolLolLol:
Actually used an old woodwork surform. Takes off nice mini shavings and doesn't get the Ali too hot like a sander can :daumenhoch:

Rasp, surform... Me confused :-[

great work clint
and CHRIS you need a day in my garage lol!!!

Doesnt look a great deal different today but i have removed quite a bit of material. Nearly there :)

-
Yep press fit. 21mm hole and 21.1mm shaft :daumenhoch:

It's lookin ace. Know you fancy polished finish but I reckon an anodised colour would look the dogs & give it an og feel :chin:
You've found that anodising place mate bung it them

that's a great bit of work clint, you should stop working with wood and go in to metal work :coolsmiley:
-
:daumenhoch:
That came out sweet
-
Lovely :4_17_5: that's come out great.
-
Very impressive 8)
Great job Clint :daumenhoch:

that does look good, does the top cap have a recessed area for the stem bolt? and what did you use to press fit the stem shaft.
-
That looks bonkers :coolsmiley:
Great crafting skills.
-
First class bit of work that :4_17_5: Looks fantastic :coolsmiley:
-
Cheers guys :)
that does look good, does the top cap have a recessed area for the stem bolt? and what did you use to press fit the stem shaft.
Yep spot on. There is a regular potts mod Bolt under the top cap. The shaft was put in the freezer and the base on a hot plate then knocked together with a hammer and a length of oak :)
-
Can't believe I missed the finished pic ::)
Great work our Clint :4_17_5:
-
Same ere.
Top skills our varnish sniffer, skills that pay the bills. :daumenhoch:
