Title: 87' Mongoose decade build (put together for a look see)
Post by: EDBANGER on February 07, 2014, 01:13 PM
Hi, I'm 34 years old and I think this may be the start of my mid life crisis.  For the past few months I've been dreaming of my old BMX days and although I was never any good at riding one I just had the urge to relive my youth a little and get the bike I always wanted that my parents wouldn't buy me.

So after a bit of searching (and one 98 GT Dyno Comp later), I came across the beginning of my project.......

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0054_zpsc8783e4c.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0054_zpsc8783e4c.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0056_zpsf4599539.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0056_zpsf4599539.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0057_zps37e08156.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0057_zps37e08156.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0058_zps2b58aed3.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0058_zps2b58aed3.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/e1707f30-a2c2-40f8-8d7e-a38fa908f1af_zps2929b23d.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/e1707f30-a2c2-40f8-8d7e-a38fa908f1af_zps2929b23d.jpg.html)

As you can see from the photos it's in pretty damn good condition.  I got all the little bits the go with the spin tech, rear pegs and front pegs too.

I bought this off ebay and it arrived today.....

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/CRANK_zpsba9582d6.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/CRANK_zpsba9582d6.jpg.html)

My original plan was to strip the anodizing off it but it's in such good condition i'm not entirely sure now.  I might wait until i've put it together and make the decision then.

So what's left to get..........

Dia compe 880 front brake
Dia compe A750 rear brake
SR Crank arms
Fluted Layback seat post
Pro class V 48s
Mongoose Freestyle badge (gutted it's missing and I think this'll be a bugger to get hold of).

So there it is, my first build and I'm looking forward to it.  I've been trawling ebay day after day in the hope that some of these parts might come up.  If anyone has any they want to sell then I'd be very greatful.  Also any suggestions welcome.

OK, I've dug out of my garage a pair of Haro forks which I believe belong to the following bikes...........

1993 HARO BLAMMO
1993 Haro Sport
1993  Air Master.

A long shot I know but would anybody like to trade them for some Mongoose Decade parts?

Another peice of the puzzle aquired.  They were a little yellowed but I've had them in bleach over night which has whitened them up a little but not as much as I'd like.  Any suggestions???

I'm liking the sound of that easier option.

Anyone got a silver chain ring they would like to swap for a gold one?

Few more bits of the puzzle obtained.  Pro Class wheels, SR Crank arm and traded my gold chain ring for this lovely chrome one.  Some more parts in the post too.  I'm getting close to putting something together now.

Thats really nice. Cant beat a goose.   :smitten: Must be quite rare in chrome as most are white or mint green.

I see you have seen the vintage mongoose site. Might be worth asking them if they do a repop badge for the head tube since they do most of the other sticker sets.  :-\

Looking forward to seeing built up.  :)

Did you buy this from a guy in brum who goes by the name 80 skidjoey on ebay. If so then i also bought this frame set from him when he was trading under the name Beautytherapy but he decided it would be better to try and rip me off by not sending it, had to open a case on him to get my money back, I have since bought another decade from a guy who also bought this and got riped off. So all in all you have had a great result in getting it and gutted he never sent it as it looks mint and very rare. Good luck with the build and keep the updates coming

I did indeed Mr67.   I was able to go to him and collect so he couldn't really get away with it.  I paid cash on delivery.  He seemed like a geniune nice bloke too, can't believe he's been doing that.  You want his address?   :LolLolLolLol:

Some more extremely vital pieces aquired over the weekend including the head tube badge.  Nice condition 880 and A750 too.  I was watching an auction on a complete bike when the guy took it off early.  I contacted him just to see what price he'd been offered and he told me he wasn't prepared to let it go for silly cheap and decided to break it.  I managed to dib dobs these beauties.  I only need seat post and bottom bracket set now and I'm on the road.

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0087_1_zpsd5b9d628.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0087_1_zpsd5b9d628.jpg.html)

So, plan of attack is going to be as follows I think.  Citric  Acid bath on Frame, forks and bars to remove the little bit rust there is.  Get the levers, seat clamp, spider, calipers and possibly spin tech powder coated (I need to do a little research into getting and reapplying the spin tech decals though).  Stick it together and feel pleased with myself.

Thanks but no i got my money back and was able to find another decade, Im glad you didn't get ripped off. Regarding the spin tech decal i think del's decals can do them, his decade decals he supplied me are bang on and arrived with in 3 days of ordering. The olny missing part im after is also a mongoose frame badge. I would love to see it when its finished.

Post by: EDBANGER on March 17, 2014, 09:08 PM
Mr67 - to be honest I didn't think I'd ever find the head tube badge but I just randomly e-mailed some guy from ebay after he took his decade off to ask him how much he'd sold it for.  He said he hadn't sold it and had decided to break it instead.  I dib dobs the head badge and brakes and was well chuffed.

I've been pretty bust of late so haven't really had time to do much up until this evening.  I've just sat for about 2 hours with some tin foil rubbing off the little spots of rust of the frame, forks and handle bars.  As a result I now have stained grey fingers tips and the skin on my thumb is peeling like a banana.  On the plus side i'm happy with the result.

Had to start doing something with it as I've just bought a GT Performer to restore aswell.  It hasn't arrived yet and the Mrs doesn't know about it.  It will go down slightly better now that she's seen me actually doing something with the other one I've already got  ;)  The performer is in a little bit worse a state than the decade rust wise so I've got some citric acid to do the bulk of the work for me.

Now then, regarding the dia-compe 128 levers.  If I wanted to have them repainted how would I take the pots and bits off?  Is it possible?  Is it worth it?

God i dont know, i picked up a mint set of locking Lee Chi locking ones with the decade and i used tech 5 levers on the other.

Just going to get the seat clamp, levers, tioga spider and calipers done again.  I went with the pro class to try and keep it closer to the orignial spec.  I really needed the Pro Class V's for that but couldn't find any.  You don't have some do you?

Right, whilst I'm waiting for my mate to sort out some powder coating for me I've started another little side project too.  I picked up a 1998 GT Performer for cheap but it was in pretty poor, rusty condition.  I've stripped it down and put the majority through a citric acid bath and I'm well chuffed with the results so far.  Thought I'd share.......

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/rustcomp4_zps24c325c8.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/rustcomp4_zps24c325c8.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/rustcomp2_zpsd65549a2.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/rustcomp2_zpsd65549a2.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/rustcomp3_zpsf3fe8d2c.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/rustcomp3_zpsf3fe8d2c.jpg.html)

All the decals have come off the chain ring though.  I'm trying to decide what to do with it.  I'm thinking have it powder coated and then I was going to attempt to make my own winged GT decal for it using my robo cutter on some sticky back plastic.

Still waiting to get my parts powder coated.  Animal (Steve) from here is currently taking out the dings in my rear Pro Class wheel.  Fingers crossed he can get them nice and straight again.

In the meantime I went over to my mums to help her with some gardening today and when I was in the shed (which is floor to ceiling with junk and gardening tools).  I noticed a set of shiney chrome forks at the very back and bottom of the pile.  After 30 minutes of wrestling around and emptying half the shed I managed to get these out......

Tange Forks

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0121_zps966aabcc.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0121_zps966aabcc.jpg.html)

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0122_zpsb41a1878.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0122_zpsb41a1878.jpg.html)

SR Spintech stem

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0119_zps250ae9f9.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0119_zps250ae9f9.jpg.html)

Unknown Two Piece Bars with Tech 77 lever

(http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m607/smncttr/IMAG0123_zps562d87ab.jpg) (http://s1134.photobucket.com/user/smncttr/media/IMAG0123_zps562d87ab.jpg.html)

Can't believe I had a spin tech stem all this time and had no idea.  The way bike parts were just swapped about when I was a kid was ridiculous.  I have no idea where I would have got it from.  I was hoping I was going to find some old frames in there too but unfortunately not.  I've recognized some of the frames I used to have from on here although I'd never know what they were.

Haha well after I took the bike apart I looked at the spanner and thought "what the hell".  That was my first attempt.  Those forks do look nice but I've actually dropped the original ones off to be re-crhomed.  BY the end of the build I will have spent a little more than the bike will be worth but I've enjoyed the process so I don't mind.  I'll be riding it to work and hopefully it may appreciate in the years to come.  I'll be selling my GT Dyno soon too if anyone is intersted in a cheap, complete bargain?

Well that stem is surplus to requirements now so I think I'll just put it out there and see if it's of any use to anyone.  Obviously it's missing all the moving parts which might be tricky to come across though.

Right then, the Decade has been sitting around not getting anywhere for a while now so I decided after seeing how awesome the Hereford ride out looked I should at least throw together what I've got to have a look and inspire me.....I think it looks pretty damn sweet (Sorry about the crap camera quality though).

Things that are still missing include brake pads & chain.  I was going to spray the tioga spider white but I think I actually quite like it all chrome??

Issues that I have now are firstly the rear brake.  I've assembled the brake through the spin tech but I think the 2-1 one part is for use with an 990 centre pull style caliper and I've sort of bodged it together.  I have no idea whether it work yet as i've not got any pads on it.  Does anyone know if this is the case?

Secondly and probably most worrying of all.  I think the forks are slightly twisted.  I've taken a picture here to try and show it.  Is this something that I can fix and how would I go about doing it?

It is mate.  If I was to go proper spec then it would have been series VI Pro Class 48 spoke.  Chances of finding some are slim so I went with these.  Got them at a good price and had the dings taken out of them.  They need polishing up but that is a job for another day.  I just want to play on it now.
