Title: Landing gear, is there a definitive way to id unstamped forks?
Post by: oberonspacefruit on February 14, 2014, 07:00 AM
Ive got a set of landing gear lookalikes, that have come on an 84 kuwi frame.
I say lookalike, they are unstamped, and the holes on the drops are nor quite in line.
Have we decide on a definitive answer on id'ing early lg's?

I know that se haulers had non us gear, stamped with lung, or lang, and of course the lites were thinner.

Any ideas on specifics?
Also, what were the "max" forks like?
Bob? Rich?

Yes there is and I'll try and answer later when I'm on the comp. There's a good timeline thread on the museum which will also help you.

the holes are very slightly staggered, ie centres not in a direct line. weld points are obv a photo needed job, i realise.
ive not got a camera to take a photo, mine got pissed wet through the other day so its on the shopping list.

there is no 'fourth hole' on the dropouts - a small washer-tab retention hole next to the axle signifies a copy
it doesnt have this hole.
also there is no gas release hole, at least non visable, theyve been painted badly as has the frame, several times. should the gas holes be at the bottom of the legs on unstamped lg's?

apparently bmx museum says a continuous weld on the outside, and three on the inner? does that hold true for yours rich?

Little holes normally at base of forks. Something to do with the manufactoring process. Most forks have them.  :)

gas hole are to release the build up of pressure in the tubes caused through heat in the welding process, without small holes the tubes would be airtight.

Thanks guys, ill post a pic up as soon as i get my camera sorted. The only thing that lead me to be suspicious, is the misalignment on the "weight saving" holes on the dropouts.

well, they are, if like me, you decide to drunkenly ride your haro master in the sea, and the salt water makes it rust from the inside out, leavy rusty stains around the hole no matter how much you rinse it.... :idiot2:
