Title: Comp III's - Fat/Thin Combo, Or Not?
Post by: Retrodan72 on February 14, 2014, 09:58 PM
As soon as payday arrives, my bike fund pot will be full again, so I need to get the tyres for the Patterson.

I was toying with a fat/thin combo as I've always thought that this was an era correct thing, pre '85. My theory was sort of confirmed after watching all 6 episodes of the 1985 Kellogg's Team Championships on YouTube, and most riders seem to be running thin/thin?

Was there a definite cut off between combos, or was it just a rider preference?

Carl, Woody and Co. would be good to answer this ?

I never used fat/thin combo Dan bitd, always used thin/thin.

I never found a massive advantage in grip having a fat on front so never used one, it always felt too bulky for me, all I ever saw was a huge fook off tyre in from of me.

I know what you're sayin Sean, I think I'm thinking about it too much, it's not getting raced, but is like it to look 'right'. :daumenhoch:

I always like a fat thin combo, that said i used  1.75s to race o/s recently.

BITD fat thin was a popular combo,i have 175/150(THIN/THINNER) on my Patterson  :daumenhoch:

Its all about bike control,if the front breaks out its harder to control than the back, hence the fat thin combo  :)

I run 2.3 front and 2.1 rear on my mtb.

Fat/thin look cool and old school  :daumenhoch:  but racing i used Thin/thin ... 1. 75

Then went to 1 3/8 ..

I Remember spraying fooking hair spay on them at Earls Court for extra grip ..

Always rode thin/thin bitd as I found my Torker doesn't like a fatty on the front due to the angle of the head tube and fork, or my weird riding position  :crazy2:

Fat/thin does look the part on certain builds though  :daumenhoch:

I prefer fat thin. I always feel sketchy with a thin tire on the front!

Cheeky cnut! :LolLolLolLol:

If you watch the footage closely, I'm actually upright when I fell off!
I even dodged a crash on the corner to reach my crash on time! "nono"

I had fat/thin on the Haro the year before, last year was thin/thin. I've gone thin/thin on all of mine except my Mach One simply because I've run out of tyres!

Build it and look at it a number of times before you decide. I can lend you a fat if you don't want to waste cash :daumenhoch:

If you're wanting authentic, then for the vast majority it was either 1.75/1.75, or even 1.75/1.5 . Some of the pros and superclass (obviously a lot faster) did run fat fronts, eg Timothy.
When I finished racing bitd I was 6' and quite a lot of stones, I never needed more than a 1.75 on the front.
