Title: Skyway Anniversary Graphite Vs Skyway Graphite
Post by: Orange777 on February 23, 2014, 09:21 AM
Chaps,

I don't have the space for an old school rider - so I am doing the next best thing and convetring one of my show bikes to have components on that I can replace. For example I have NOS Shinko's and will be getting some cheap tyres that I won't mind ruining!

I bought some Skyway Graphite's from a member on here about 18 months ago and love them. I would quite like another set but then I saw the anniversary ones. (Picture below). I have been chatting to the people at Planet BMX and cannot decide whether to get them, or see if a member on here has another set of the Black & Gold graphites.

Has anyone got any opinions (bad and good) of these anniversary ones? I will wait and see what people say then maybe put a wanted ad up.

Thanks in advance!

I don't get why they would put black or silver flanges in place of the original gold!    ???

I think Torker Mick bought some of the white ones with a gold flange. Might be worth sending him a pm for his thoughts on them. I know he doesn't buy any rubbish

They did a limited run of silver flanged Graphites for team riders, Fookin sight rarer than gold hubbed ones too.  :daumenhoch:

I saw the silver ones on Google Images - did not know they sold them. Explains why they are not an option. Cheers!!

Black hubs look like they've been pimped by Khan or some other car ruining outfit.

Wankballs and that innit

I agree black hubs look $hit, gold or silver for me.

Maybe they did the black ones because of the black TA they're doing  :-\

By making something that looks like an old part availiable to all , it makes the original part less desirable for some. If VW started making and exact replica of a beetle , then beatle collectors would say the same as would star wars toy collectors etc etc

If something is rare , that is a good reason to collect it ,and why parts cost a lot of money . once you copy it and make it accessible it takes something away from the original , why would you bother feeling special riding down the street on a 80s TA when anyone can by a re issue and do the same

not true for everyone  but true for some collectors for sure

it makes the parts less special , turning some people off the original due to its mass market appeal

This is the reason re-issues are always made differently,  so they cannot be passed off as 80's original, re-issuing graphite skyways hasn't effected the price of originals,  and if anything has made them more desirable, especially to a collector. there will always be the scrupulous cowboys trying to pull the wool over buyers eyes but that's the same in any hobby,  and the older these bikes get the more dodgy people it will attract,  as can now be seen on eBay all the time...

sam

 not for me

even though something is made differently , it still takes away from the original and you would be suprised on the number of parts re issued that have no difference at all
Title: Re: Skyway Anniversary Graphite Vs Skyway Graphite
Post by: meticulous on February 26, 2014, 05:20 PM
Maybe some things rich,  just like lenny just mentioned...    Somethings are just too easy to pass off as originals  (like seat posts, due to the nature in design).  But for most like skyways reissued items,  I don't think it will effect the value of the original parts as they are made different.  I do believe it will take away a bit of the exclusiveness of original parts,  but not value....
Unfortunately from a business perspective,  if there is a market for it,  and a way to make it,  then they will,  a little shame I know,  I say blame the customers....    ;D

Totally understand everyone's comments - I would have a build with no wheels though if I had not cheated on the Skyways.

As a total date whore, I am annoyed with myself. I have NOS Shinko fat and skinny fitted that cost a fortune - attached to fake wheels.

Would now be a good time to ask if anyone has any alloy black 80s graphites! :)

Limited run of 30,,,cough,cough 300 but who's going to find out  ;)  :LolLolLolLol:
They did so though Chris. I think it was 2011, not 2012, unless these were done after the 'we have found 150 sets of original hubs and created 50 sets of white, 50 black, 25 red and 25 blue, using the original moulds'.

I had a red set that I recently sold to a collector in the US  :daumenhoch:

These look like the ones I need but not on great shape and price even if it's fair is too much for me!

Do any members have mint versions of these from the 80s? Be cool to see some.

It's the condition that is the thing am gutted about - just seem a little too wrecked. Wonder if there is a set with Earl's Sell All Of His Stuff. Had some amazing NOS from them at a price that leaves me living off beans.

There's some proper hoarders on here  ::).
Not just here, everywhere. There are members on the Museum with hundreds of bikes and thousands of parts. Private collectors with hoards of stuff too.

This is why the repop market is booming Chris  :-X
