Hi all,
I'm going to be starting my first refurb of an OS bike quite soon :)
Sticking to the original colours / style etc. of the bike - Vs - a full colour change and making it look totally different..............................any thoughts?
-
Depends what it is.
Get some 'before' pics up :daumenhoch:

If its a stock frame and fork set with parts. I would keep it original as you can. :)
I think when a frame and fork set was available without parts, you can go any combo choice is yours. :-\
:radbmxsmilie:

Is that a Night Burner?

Is that a Night Burner?
Not sure mate, it was listed as a Mk1 burner - just consulted Google though, looks like it could be, what ya recon?

I totally agree, original has gotta be the way forward in this case :)
-
Night Burner would be my guess although it appears to have yellow decals on the down tube. It looks to be all there, although I can't make out if its a chain ring and spider - should be.
Nice first project though bud - plenty of parts out there all of which don't require a mortgage adviser to buy.
There was a time when folk would have raised a crucifix to a Burner on here but they seem to be enjoying a RAD renaissance at the moment. :daumenhoch:

Here's one I restored for a mate of mine about 18months ago.
[attachment=1]
The hardest thing to find was NOS original grips - took me bloody ages!
I do know a good place that can match the frame coating colour well though if you get stuck :daumenhoch:
-
+1 :)
Was the Ultra Burner available with Red parts. I know the norm is Gold. Sure I've seen a few with Red. :-\ :-[

Had a looksee on-line last, i think your right - Its defo a Night Burner. I'm pretty sure all the parts are there, but not sure what you mean by chain ring and spider? (i need a bit of schooling)
Great, an approval on choice :) seen loads of Burners on here, some are real beauts - cant wait to get stuck into mine :) :)

Man that's nice!
Having a good old hunt for parts has gotta be all part of the fun, right?
I may well be back for that paint recommendation firm - Think ive worked out the original frame colour of the Night Burner was Black Superchrome, but after doing a bit of googling / reading that finish seems to be quite hard to get hold of these days? i may be wrong of course, well there's a good chance i am ;)
Found this an all last night, good reference point? http://www.raleighburner.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php't=36266

JEEZE!! thats a big arse collection of sweeeeeet rides!! "wantit" they all yours?
-
Lord, no :LolLolLolLol: That's Julian mega collection...i'm struggling to get even one bike together.....
-
werent they chrome with a plastic coating over them?? my mate had a night burner and im sure it started peeling.
-
Yup, black superchrome is correct. The company I found had a perfect match for it.
Are the grips that came with it in good condition?
Not too sure what year yours is (the one I did was a MkII anyway so different to yours), but here's a spec list from 1984 which might help. You can find others online if you have a hunt. Reproduction padsets and decals are all available.
[attachment=1]
I do like the MkI Burners I must admit. I am sure a fair few on here started out with Burners BITD.
I still have my original MkII SuperTUFF Burner, and my first resto was a MkI Ultra Burner. I'll try to dig out some pics :daumenhoch:

Awesome! Looks like i might be knocking on your door (so to speak) when it comes to panting time!
Not so sure on the grips yet, i should have my hands on the bike by Monday, expect an update and few pics :)
Ive seen some pics of a few lovely Ultra Burners! real nice looking rides them- Dig em out an get em up!
Also:
Should i be starting a new thread when the refurb starts to document the re-build, or just carry on on this one?
-
My original MkII SuperTUFF, given to me by Father Christmas in 1984. Only thing I have changed is the tyres :daumenhoch:

I was about to dive in singing Mark at Impressive Finish's praises, but reading the link it looks like he doesn't do the smoked superchrome finish any more :-\
I'd give him a bell in case as his work was great - he did both my Pro-Class Geese :4_17_5:
http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,104773.0.html
The Mini Pro-Class was done by crazy Neil Arcus (N2Cus) but he doesn't do BMX resto anymore :'(
(cue the stories about the silver van of death, the 4am club, dying Tuffs in his white plastic bath, polishing to within an inch of it's life and his tasty missus in the bikini shots in his house - I miss Neil :2funny:  :2funny: )
-
My first resto. I have always loved the way the MkI Ultra looked so it made sense to build one!

Cheers Spen69, when the time comes i'll give the fella call just in case, i'm sure there will be other options, hopefully!

Spider is the part which fixes to the crank arm and the chain ring fixes to the spider. :daumenhoch:

So, it has arrived, needs a whole lotta love!
According to the following, it was made in Notts in Sept 1983:
"Dating your bike:
Eg, NH44629
First letter...
N > Nottingham
Second letter... month
A - JAN
B - FEB
D - MAR
E - APR
G - MAY
H - JUN
K - JUL
L - AUG
M - SEP
N - OCT
P - NOV
S - DEC
2,3,4,5,6 etc = the year 82, 83 and so on
so NH44629 would mean -
Made in Nottingham , June 1984
The remaining numbers of the serial number have believed to be the production numbers for that month, but due to ridiculously high numbers given this is said to be practically impossible to produce. There could be some truth in it but as of yet no one knows for sure.
Here's a few before snap

Those grips are spot on for you Night Burner resto :daumenhoch: getting them in that good of a quality is pretty hard these days...
I restored a MK2 Night Burner a few years back know (its long since been sold know) and I had the whole frame, forks and bars rechromed before the superchrome was laid down...The super chrome was done by Mark Roles (Impressiv finishes) but last i heard he doesn't do the Nightburners anymore because basically his supplier cannot get the correct stuff anymore (saying that that was a few years back he maybe able to get it know I don't no ?)

Whats up with the decals on that? they look original from here but they are not Night Burner decals! :-\
(not bike above! referring to OPs burner)

Speaking of decals, where's the best place to get some and the pad set?

The best pad sets you can get for your Night Burner would be off a guy called Steve Dobson (Esemdesign) I think that Steve come on here under the forum name 'Firebird'
Here's Steve's link for the padsets,

The best quality Raleigh Burner decals you can buy are from Jonny Abbot (Bmxman). His decals are spot on and far superior to many decal sets that are on Ebay...
