Title: 1998 Hoffman Evel Knievel no.580 more original parts sorted new wheels
Post by: Dodge-13 on April 03, 2014, 10:00 PM
Well like most people Evel Knievel and Mat Hoffman are two of my heros so a bike with both legends on it is simply a must have

Back in 1998 I couldn't afford one and last year I had the chance to buy a cleanish one off a friend but at the time I didn't really have the spare cash so didn't buy it,
i regretted it ever since so when one came up on eBay the other week I had to have it!

It looked in ok condition but the pics weren't the best so it was abit of a gamble but I was happy I won it

So then I started looking for the missing pieces seat. Decals, brake levers, pedals
Levers and pedals were sorted easily although the levers seem to be different depending on which number they are early ones seemed to have just a bake brake with a tech 77 and the later ones had 2 brakes with mx 101 levers

I knew the original seat would be hard to find but just 2 days later a sheddy looking bike came on eBay which had a EK seat on it so I ended up buying the whole bike just for the seat but on closer inspection the sheddy bike actually had a lot of cool parts on it
Moes bars
Dk stem
Hutch seat clamp
Toga power ring
Triple trap pedals etc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v718/dodge-13/20EC8AD4-E496-43E3-BDD7-1028EAB13667.png)

Then I noticed NOS super 7x rims on eBay every week and I thought I bet the rims are flaking so I was going to order some but then thought I'd just wait until the bike came just to make sure it needed them didn't want to spend £70-£75 for no reason
So a week later the bike came and like I thought the rims were flaking
No drama il get on eBay and buy a set only to find out they were all gone!
I was fooking fuming with myself

But then I got talking to jim (blacky) and he put me in touch with a guy for the decals
And he also had a set of rims he would sell I couldn't believe my luck so did a deal straight away

This is how it looks now

I'm going to strip it down and have it repainted as there are a few chips
Then I'm building it up with just the rear brake and single tech 77 as i like the look even tho it came out the factory with 2 brakes but I've got the front brake and mx 101 levers just incase I do ever want it back to how it was

Can't wait to get it finished allready

You can get Super 7X's for £60 on eBay at the mo - Cyclesport (I think it was) was flogging em off about a year ago for £30 a single rim.

Before these NOS one's emerged last year they were fetching a bit more - mainly (although they're an ace rim) the chrome was renown for being a bit sh1tty so not a lot of em survived in good nick - one drop of rain and the buggers blister  :LolLolLolLol:
Title: Re: 1998 Hoffman Evel Knievel no.580
Post by: newlovetattoos on April 07, 2014, 09:37 PM
haha I remember I spent (what felt like at the time) a ton on a pair for my homeless mack around 97 and I literally had them for 2 weeks and the chrome was fooked.. to the point where going near puddles caused mild panic attacks.... never mind being caught at the trails when it starts to rain.

Post by: Dodge-13 on April 07, 2014, 09:47 PM
Cheers dudes

I gave £90 posted for the rims which i thought was fair as the ones on ebay were going for £65-£75 plus postage

The ones that were on ebay have all sold now they sold the last pair the day before i got the bike!

I looked into parts /decals etc and just thought I'd never be able to find a seat so I sacked the idea off :LolLolLolLol:
It's looking like an awesum build so far dude! Can't wait to see the finished bike...it's gonna be sweeet! "wantit"

Bit of an update on this i picked it up from my mates paint shop the other day hes done an awesome job of it
Even tho we were strugling to find out what shade of white it should be,

when i got it i noticed straight away it had been painted but it just didnt look right it was just too bright plus it was done badly,
so after searching the internet and finding nothing we worked out the chainring must be the original paint so colour matched that which came back as ford diamond white
It looks loads better now just waiting on a few more parts to come this week then i can get it finished

I honestly don't know how I do it but some how my good luck on this build continues again!
A friend of mine who used to have an Evel found this leaflet/hanger that would have been on the bike when new and gave it too me :)
It's a shame the hook was damaged and has been cut off but it's still a cool feature to go with the bike,
just need a box it came in now ha ha

Bit of an update on this

I've been looking for some girthy hubs for awhile so I can build my NOS super 7x rims on them and keep the other wheels as a rider set
This way I can ride it with out worrying about damaging the NOS rims
But I haven't seen any for sale anywhere then the other week I saw a Hoffman taj on eBay which had a good set of girthy hubs but the generator rims were knackered
So I did a deal on the whole bike lol
It was for sale on here awhile ago but i thought it had been snapped up,
But TBH it's that nice I'm going to build up another wheel set for it and keep it in my collection
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v718/dodge-13/5DE93F6E-77EF-4EAC-97E3-1C3301B21DE3.jpg)

So I stripped the wheels down cleaned the hubs and got them to my wheel builder
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v718/dodge-13/22EC614F-D2F1-49E3-838D-D3680811113E.jpg)

Then last week I spotted a Hoffman George going cheap with the original grips that I need so I bought that too and in between that I found an old skid mark tyre

So yeah I think I've pretty much nailed it now, once the wheels are back il get some better pics together and I'm hoping to get it too MK  :daumenhoch:

Hello mate - new here ... I got back into BMX about 18months ago when I set about building a Hoffman EK from a frame I found on ebay. This is how I've got it so far ... will add OG parts as I find them.

I ended up getting a great guy here in Aus to make me some new decals because I never thought I'd find an OG set (or repro OG set). Where did you get yours?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

PS: I love what you've done with yours. They're heavy but a great rider, right? Solid, smooth, great handling.

Another pic. I went for a custom build rather than an OG one and I've since changed the pedals for Hoffman Sole Mate pedals and am about to swap the tuffs for either some Primo Balance chrome wheels or some Sun Rhyno Lite XLs. Not sure which yet.

Thanks glad you like it man   :daumenhoch:
I'm very happy with how's it turned out and it rides awesome

My decals are actually copies but there really good copies I had the last set off a guy here in the uk they weren't cheap tho I might be able to email you some scans of the decals if you want?
I'm sure you could find someone in aus to print them for you
