Title: Rod Beckering tribute PK. With new parts.
Post by: kungfunky on April 10, 2014, 11:54 AM
The final pieces to the kungfunky collection are slowly coming together, the pre 84 SE lineup is now complete with at least one of each model in the hoard  :) So it was time to move on to the next phase of builds, the tributes. Having already got the Stu tribute I had to get cracking with another one, but I couldn't decide which one.

It was a couple of photos that that helped me make the choice of Rod's 79 winter nationals ride.

Most of the photos are not great quality or from a distance which is good because I really enjoy the research and hunt for more info.

The inspiration.

I've cropped this image as I'm working on 3 more tributes which will replicate this photo, taken in the SE pits at the winter nationals.

The build.
It's been a difficult build to say the least, not because of the parts but because he changed parts virtually every race so many of the photos had a different clamp, race plate, seat etc.

I need to start off thanking grabonkid Mike. Not one of his easiest plates to make but fooook me is he good.

I need to change a couple of parts when I find them like the seat and post, I have the clamp and a new chain ring. The parts are not fully restored but just cleaned. I wanted this bike to look like it's been raced not hung on a wall and I absolutely love it because it's so different. It's a great mix match of burnished, black, brown, yellow, gold, blue, tan and baby blue.
I also need to change the down tube decal to a Gen 1 PK decal (the shadowing needs to be a couple of mm thicker  :uglystupid2: ).

Fooking ace that! Looking killer Ash!  :4_17_5:
I love the mix of colours on this as it's just like we built them BITD. Way cool that you've gone for the ridden look too as don't think it'd look the same being all Nos.Just love to have a ride on this!  :smitten:

Thanks for the props on the plate too bro! It's mucho appreciated. :daumenhoch:

Cheers,Mike  ;)

Thanks all, pleased a few of you like it  :4_17_5:
I intended to make it look a little used so things like the cable, tyres, caliper etc are nice and used and not perfect.

To answer a couple of questions. It's easy for me to take the photos there as it's my land with my lock up so I pull a bike out and click away, could be a bit more creative granted but I can't be arsed  :LolLolLolLol:

And Joff, as you'll notice the fork Rod used were actually Tuff forks and not Early RI like I have and I tried a decal on them but it wouldn't stick because of the shape  ;). So might have to get a thinner decal made or something.

I did think the forks were different , they look more rounded on the shoulders in the og pic . A thinner decal should do the trick Ash  ;)

Cool bike mate and i personally love the survivor/used look , adds to it's appeal imo  8)

I actually have the correct fork Joff, but they're nos and at £500 a set I'll not be stripping them that's for sure.
The decal I used kept peeling away as the forks curve so I had to ditch it.

I agree with the survivor look quotes and this is starting to become one of my fave bikes because of that.

I'm going for a survivor/used look on my current build and if it turns out anywhere near as good as this I'll be well happy!! Love it!  :smitten:

Couldn't keep looking at this bike with the wrong seat and post combo so had to get it changed over.
It now sports the correct Laguna seat post, PL-1 clamp and seat.

Looking how it really should and I'm Mclovin it.

Looks way better w/the PL-1 &  seat/ post  combo!  :daumenhoch:

Are you gonna get a DC red dot lever Ash to replace the Team Products one you have on it?

We used to buy straight ones & bend em' BITD w/ the closed circular end of a wrench & a blowtorch.Ah them were the days when you had to modify parts to suit your ride.

I'm after a TP lever if you have one going spare bud.

This levers a dia compe double bend Mike.  I have a red dot but it's straight so was wondering about bending it, never done one before and didn't want to snap it.

And do I have any TP's ?  ::) just a few pal  :LolLolLolLol:  even have a couple of the mega rare Gen 1's (the NLT difference is the gen1 has a small TP stamp). Sadly I have none spare though.

OK,I'll take the DC double bend then Mr  "I've got a case load of TP's & you can't have one!"  :LolLolLolLol:

Just send me the red dot & i'll have a go at it w/my sledge hammer!  :D

I'll be putting the late on next week at some point so I'll get an updated photo soon  :daumenhoch:

Once again thanks for all the thumbs up  :4_17_5:

Totally agree with the  seat Marty, not only does it make the bike look better on its own right but also replicates the photo, much better too.
