Title: Riding / crashing / helmets
Post by: stevepeanut on April 12, 2014, 10:20 PM
I have been thinking a lot lately about helmets and crashing. Not a nice subject.

I have been on a few ride outs and noticed, myself included, most people don't wear helmets.

What's got me thinking, is stuff my other half has told me, she has spent over 20 years working in disability outreach. The stuff she has told me is frightening. People that have fallen off bikes at walking pace, hit their heads and have ended with life changing injuries. It's kind of given me the frighteners. The last ride out I did last year I wore a tsg black helmet. Totally uncool. Especially when everyone else has cool caps and hats.

I'm interested in people's views on the subject. Are you happy to ride with no helmet? Do you ride without one and think ....hmmm maybe I should wear one but no one else does.

I think along the lines of, I could do 100 rides with loads of people and no one will crash, but one day someone might, and what if it's me.

I am thinking of getting an oldskool retro lid to wear in ride outs, so I have some protection, but it's also going to look good.

Please let me know what you think on this subject, and I am just interested in people's thoughts, I am in no way trying to preach and say "you should wear a helmet".

Will anyone be wearing one on a ride out ?
A peanut balanced on the top of your head looks cr#p IMO,  i'll take the risk, never wore one BITD.
health and safety is a bit OTT  nowadays.
wouldn't be surprised if they make it law soon anyway, then i shall go and get a 1980's race lid.

personally I wouldn't wear a helmet if I was just out for a 'bike ride'... but I don't drink and ride either  :buck2:

If I'm riding a park then I always wear a pi$$pot helmet ... like Gra said ... rock a cap if you want a peak  :daumenhoch:

I wear a crash hat riding dirt, ramps, out on a mtb/road bike.  I dont wear one on a social/pub type ride though.  I never really worry about what i look like in a crash helmet either.

I was very lucky 20 years ago when I came off my bike at Bowes Lyon concrete park in stevenage. I had a full face helmet in the car but its not cool to wear helmets is it... quite a few stitches in my bonce + concussion. Nowadays I always wear a helmet on my road bike and also when I go out with my 5 year old but if I pop out on my own on a bmx to the shops then I tend not to. I guess I still haven't learnt my lesson.

Me and my lad always wear a helmet on the track.  :daumenhoch:
Came off at Heywood track bitd without a lid on and spent 5 days in hospital. Apparently went over me bars and done a 10 yard face slide on the gravel. My face was one big scab.  :idiot2:
Still remember fook all about it even now.  ???

Missed landing a jump at a track

Broken collar bone but intact face thanks to a full face helmet

I don't wear a helmet when out riding and like to chuck the bike around a bit. Recently though, I have been getting a 'click', like the chain never engaged the tooth on the freewheel or ring correctly if you get my meaning, and I always think about Nick's freewheel giving out and ending in kissing the floor at speed. I may just change the freewheel though lol!

I did come off bitd though and hit my temple on the floor. I couldn't even remember where I lived when I came round and was lucky to have my mates around who thought it funny to take me to someone else's house, knock the door and leave me there. When they opened the door, I went straight in, straight upstairs and couldn't find my bedroom. I was gutted  :D  It took 3 days for everything to get back to 'normal'.
