good question, all the answers point to Torker stems only having square backs but look at this Torker add http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php'topic=99244.0

and somebody did a resto on a square backed Oddysey which were supposed to have the round backs..so fook knows what the truth is, I have a round backed one that was sold to me as a Torker, it has no markings on it and it came with a Torker frame and forks so im inclined to think its a genuine Torker :chin:

There are a couple of subtle variations of the Torker ULTRA-6 stem which point to where they were made, the sharp edged anodised versions are US, the slightly softer edged versions point to Asian made - the Torker stamped version is definitely Asian.  The ambiguity comes from refinishing which will inevitably lead to a softer rounder edge from polishing.

As far as I was aware there was one simple way to tell a Torker from an Odyssey and that was the top down profile. At the point where the stem narrows towards the stem bolt a Torker slopes in and the Odyssey uses a couple of 90 degree cuts...

So we are none the wiser I will get a pic of the oddyssey stem and the torker one next to each other and see the differences

I always thought the early Torker stems were all square backed but im sure i read somewhere (possibly the museum) that they did do round backs . Im also sure there is a Torker advert that shows a round back on a 6 bolt stem. My stamped Torker 6 bolt has a round back and we believe this was asian made in and around 84 so that fits with what Chris has said  . The bike it came on was a true survivor bought from Alan's in Wigan around this time , no parts had been changed on it since new .

Im sure all the odyssey stems had chrome shafts .

Mike (Grab on kid) is the man to speak to , he know's his Torker stuff  ;)

Thinking about it , Mike did tell me the the threads are different ... ie imperial or metric . Just not sure which relates to which , i need to do a search for the thread  .
