Title: 87 decade build Finished
Post by: hokuspokus74 on April 30, 2014, 02:10 PM
Just started my decade build,is there a certain brake system you need for these,just i wasnt going to use a rotor,gyro system on this,as am not a lover of rotor/gyro systems.

Thought i would go with the white tryes and grips instead :daumenhoch:

Waiting on the grips,and need to look for the correct calliper now aswell,have original pedals but cant get the bad cage of one too put a good cage on it...any idea's :daumenhoch:

Yeah only got the stem yesterday (white one) but have a black one never has been fitted to a bike,so not sure if the black one would look out of place :daumenhoch:   waiting on a couple of other parts coming from the U.S  :D

I've recently set up the brakes on my Decade using a spintech. It's a nightmare, and ideally you need someone on hand to help tension up the cables at the splitter.

This was a good guide, i didn't follow it word for word, as i found some of the measurements to be a bit out:

http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=376563

This will also help:

http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=4757899

^^ There are some scanned Spin-Tech instructions in that thread, a useful bit of reference. ( i took my cable inner/outer measurements from the original instructions on the last link)

Off the top of my head i bought (all from ebay) the following:

2 x rear brake cables, with standard 'barrel' ends;
2 x rear brake cables, with 'road bike' ends
About 10 x 5mm ferrules to go over the ends of the outer cables, to make it look like a neat, professional job;
3m of white 5mm outer cable housing
a handful of cable end crimps.

The front brake is identical to fitting any potts mod front brake, however the rear is where it gets tricky.  I would buy the adjuster from the chap on ebay.  He is very helpful, and they are cheap.

The key thing to do is to make sure the black metal spintech/rotor linkages are nicely lubed up, and the plastic spacer tube is installed on the stem.

You must also keep the whole rotor system (the black bit with linkages on the stem) as low as possible (near to the headset as possible) when tensioning up the cables that you have just passed through the 2:1 splitter.  This is so the linkage and rotor on the stem has enough upwards travel to enable the brakes to be applied before it hits the underside of the stem.

You also want to make sure you have about 1 or 2 inches of cable between the down tube bracket and the splitter, so that the lower cables  have enough room to travel when the brake is applied.

The rear centre pull set up is as normal, make sure its not too tight/pads close to the rim as when you do the final step, it will pull them closer still.

Finally, thread the small length of cable from the rear lever, through the special adjuster, through the tiny hole in the linkage mechanism under the stem cap, then out the bottom of the stem.  Pull the cable with some pliers, until the linkage starts to move upwards from the bottom slightly, and there is tension on it, but don't allow the linkage to move up (you always need to keep it as low as possible for maximum upwards/downwards travel) then tighten the bolt under the stem.  Don't remove this as there is a little ball bearing inside.

Now you just need to spend hours and hours redoing each step, adjusting it all to get them dialled in correctly :LolLolLolLol:

It's a pain, but hope that made sense :daumenhoch:

Laidback i wish you had of put that on earlier lol ive been doing that almost allday and am not long finished,i know what you mean by keeping the tension good,fooking nightmare i had then the callipers wouldnt pull then when they did the lever just stayed at the grip,thought i was going to end up pulling all my hair out,now i need a front calliper,so got to do some searching :D

who is the gut on ebay that does that tensioner etc or whatever it is you call the fooking wee thing  :2funny:

You're flying through these builds!!!  Where do you keep them all when they're done?  I've barely got room for one complete bike!!!  ;D

Looking nice dude.  Are those new Decals or where they just in good condition when you got it?  I'm waiting for my forks to come back from being straightened.  I noticed after putting it together they weren't straight at all.

there new decals Ed,decided to change the pink tyres to white,for some reason they didnt look rite the might have looked better if they were 20.175 and maybe a gumwall etc,..were your forks beny when you got them? still like the decade in chrome,i might need to buy one :D as for the og pedals i think i would need to drill the bolts out that hold the cages on as there impossible to get apart :coolsmiley:
