Title: MK14 Show and Shine Judges nomination/volunteer thread
Post by: stidds on May 20, 2014, 10:50 PM
We have been discussing things between the admin/mods and have decided that the Show and Shine judging at MK14 (and subsequent years) will no longer be picked by admin, it will be picked and judged by you the members of Radbmx®.

What I propose in this thread is:

a) outline the job and what it entails.
b) take nominations or volunteers for the job
c) if somebody is nominated then I would like that person to accept or refuse the nomination in this thread.
d) we will then run a poll/vote to see who the (un)lucky judges are

I hope that makes sense.

The reason that I would like the person nominated to accept in this thread is because it is not an easy job and I do not want it thrust on somebody who really doesn't fancy the task ahead.

So here we go

a)  Judging can be tricky, you will have approx 1000 BMX's to look at, study and decide which ones are worthy of a prize or mention (medal).

Anybody who has judged a S&S concours competition before whether that is BMX or cars, motorbikes etc, will know what an emense task it can be.  You start off thinking I am not going to be really anal about era correct parts etc, however you then find you have 4 or 5 bikes almost identical, so you then have to get anal about parts on the bike, simply because you HAVE to be able to differentiate between them to get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Therefore a big requirement will be a good/solid knowledge of original parts vs repo parts, ages and era's of parts, OG finish vs refinished etc etc etc.  You honestly will start obsessing over the age of a brake cable.

This also leads me to the next bit, the judging of the S&S will and does take up a lot of your Sunday afternoon.  We usually close the S&S entry about 12pm and then judging needs to start as it has to be completed by the end of the days racing so the prizes can be given out.

I am not trying to make the job sound hard or over play it at all and I am not trying to put anybody off of judging it, I just want you to know exactly what you are letting yourself into.

There will be enough ex-judges/admin/mods around to help in any way we can with any queries/questions etc, so you will not be on your own.

When the final judges have been decided then we (royal we as in admin) will then make sure we liaise and make things as easy to judge as we can, we will supply the marking sheets and also if you need some dogs bodies then we will make sure you have whatever is needed.

So that leads us onto the next part.....

b) Volunteers and nominations, have a read of the above again, then put names forward in this thread ONLY.

I will keep an eye on things and of course message me (or any admin/mod) if you need any clarification of what is required.

I would say that if you do nominate somebody then let them now they have been nominated and point them in the direction of this thread.  I will not include anybody in the vote/poll that has not accepted the nomination as it is just not fair.

We need 3-5 judges for this task, that can be 3-5 judges to judge everything or we can have specialised judges for each S&S category, which would mean less time judging and more time enjoying MK.

It really is up to you guys how it is done.

An extremely difficult job no doubt about it. Any thoughts for having judges for specific categories as a mid school expert may struggle with vintage etc  :)

And yes for Mike  :daumenhoch:

I was thinking along those lines also Ash, I don't mind how it is done as long as the decisions are made.

So of course specific judges for categories would also benefit as each judge wouldn't have to spend so long judging.

Thanks Ash, I have updated the original post to reflect this.

2 - 3 per category, can't vote for their own bike etc but will be able to watch some of the racing which is a massive bonus.

It will help to speed things up for sure, the only issue I can see is all the separate judges deciding on bike of the show.  :-\

All great shouts and nominations, but unless you get the person you have nominated to accept that nomination in this thread, it will be a useless nomination.

As I said I will not just thrust this job onto somebody who doesn't want it, they have to be happy to do it and understand what it entails.

I really appreciate the thought Paul & dan but after doing it for three years at the bb events I realise exactly what's involved.
I like to go round & gently soak up the BMX loveliness at my leisure whilst chatting to guys without the feeling of any pressure.
The judging is a high pressure job. It was for around 130 burners never mind the delites we have at MK.

I have done it all before with the Ford RS owners club , judging concours cars and tbh i got fed up of all the moaning etc that comes with being a judge .  I am also helping JT on his stand again .

I'll be there to help set up , take down and clear up on the Sunday evening but judging really  doesn't appeal .

Thanks Jon, what we do with our own bikes is not judge or vote on them.

When I did this a couple of years ago, when the we the judges got to my bikes, I simply walked away so they could have a look without me anywhere near.  Also when we were looking at placing bikes in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and one of my bikes was in contention, again I would walk the other way so I had no say in the result.

You should indeed be able to enter your own bikes even if you are judging, lets face it we all do this out of love for the sport/hobby.  We are only human.

As per Joff and Carl's nomination......

I'd be happy with assistance from others in Old school race, pits and street..

BUT................

I know nothing of Mid/new or Freestyle so i'd have to bail on these categories i'm afraid. Others would have to do these.

I won't judge Cruisers neither as i'll be entering one this year for the first time ever.

Happy to help anyhow.  :)

I think.

Just an idea...........

as judging often causes controversy ... why not have a tent / area for each category . hang a number on each bike 1 - what ever. have a voting box in each tent/area. each radster gets 1 vote in each tent. that way the people chose the winner . no one can argue the toss then . like i say just an idea.  :daumenhoch:

Guys, although I agree a lot of names listed would be great judges, its no good just putting up names for votes.

If you think someone would be good, ask them first and if they agree then put them up in here.

Otherwise its pointless  :daumenhoch:

Rob, I know what you're saying about consulting people, but at the same time, I'm sure the people that are getting mentioned in this thread are reading this and are really appreciating the thought that people consider them worthy enough.

It's also jogging people to second the nomination too.

They can always say no, or luckily yes as in Brett's case.  :daumenhoch:

do some people really get arsey when they don't win? never been to mk but if i would like to be a judge, jury and executioner there. you should have a deadline of 10 minutes to judge a category and pick a winner, that way the judges would have time to enjoy the rest of the weekend and get pished.  >:D

oh ok mate fair point :daumenhoch: still does not stop people leaning towards their fav brand, bike or mates bike though does it  :-\ give the slips out maybe say 1 for each cat = say 7 cats=7 slips per person-if people are going to "cheat" they will always find a way around it I suppose  :-[

the logistics of giving out forms to people , counting making sure people do not cheat etc is way more work than people realise , and as we all want to enjoy the day will mean it is not an option to allow voting etc.

Great in principal , nightmare in reality

as we can see with the lack of acceptance not many people want to take it on. So to all those who have complained about the judging in the past, accused us of cheating and being disonhest please step up and put your time where your very large and annoying mouth is! if not , shut the fook up.

so now it's only MS: midschooljon and Philbert......? FS: brettypeeps and....? OS race: ....?

Looks like at least 3 more honourable judges needed for the main cats :coolsmiley:  (if 2 - 3 per category as Ash suggested)   ...or one or two more (according to Stidd's 3-5 "judges to judge everything" idea).

...and i support the Phil Sawza draft ....and Olé Esteban aka Animal :yahoo_silent:  and suggest bodamus for FS

Just a few questions, how long would the judging take for one category like OS race & would it be possible to race & judge on the sunday or is it a choice of one or the other?

Also what is the full list of categories?
Cheers,Mike  :daumenhoch:

I don't think you'd be able to give both the time they need

Mike I think the categories are something like

Vintage
OS Race
OS Freestyle
OS Cruiser
OS Street
MS Race
MS Freestyle
New School

Could be others but from memory it's something like that.

I think you could if you were the judge of the Vintage / cruiser  / mini categories where's there's fewer entries but no way if it's the OS race/street/freestyle sections.
