Title: Child's First Bike
Post by: zombie_jesus on May 30, 2014, 09:34 AM
So,  my son is about to hit the big 'three' and is in need of a BMX. What's the best thing for recreational use that is not a piece of shit. Price is not an issue. Thanks.

I would start with a balance bike , get him balanced and then you will not need stabilisers on the pedal bike you buy him affter that .
my choice was the alleyrunner by early rider. unbelivable piece of kit and gets as much as it costs on ebay after you have finnished with it

my daughter had one from 2 and last weekend it took 20 minutes to get her riding a pedal bike with no stabilisers

Hi

Just my thoughts, im no expert....I see on the net some old school 80s 16" bmx,s going for ok cash. I think in your shoes I would get one of those,,,that way you could have fun doing it up....It would probably hold it value, and at 3  I dont expect your boy is too worried about having the latest bike.

Have a look for 16" raleigh burner from mid 80s...Thats what direction I would go in. :)

how cool would this be at 3..

http://www.dtrcartwright.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Burner/Esemdesign5.htm

Small bars and seat right down,,,,as he grows just add new bars.  While your at it, why not treat yourself to a matching one to ride with him,,, when he hits 10/12 he can have that one too.

:)

Here you go mate :daumenhoch:

Depends how big your nipper is, but Early Rider and Isla Bikes make the best kids bikes to learn on. They are all super light and have scaled down bits for learning.  Cost a fair bit but you get what you pay for - my daughter's Early Rider Belter is aluminium and carbon fibre! Best thing is your kids will love riding them and the bikes are not to heavy if they fall on them.

Chubby's Specialised Hotrock balance bike above is the nuts and really well made - it was my first choice until I found the Early Rider and both my kids have learned to ride on it now.

Rad. Knew I would get quality responses here. These 'balance bikes' seem real interesting. Whatever teaches fastest is the way forward. Thanks folks.

Balance bikes are definitely the way to go. We bought our son a wtp seed when he was 4 or 5, he'd never shown any interest before that, and didn't really for a year or so once he had the seed. Used to take him out with and without stabilisers and he'd wobble about for about 10 minutes and then give up. Then one day I was like 'sod it' popped the cranks, pedals, chain off and took him in the garden, 15 minutes later and the cranks were going back on and he was off riding. Now he has a United Recruit and loves it  :)

Those earlyriders are awesome:

On a lesser level check these, I love them (shame I won't need one any longer)

Whichever way you go enjoy, it's a limited time experience but memories forever  :daumenhoch:

The early rider belter is awsome , thats what Lily has now , she took 10 mins to ride it after the balance bike

Have you tried looking at
http://www.frogbikes.com/lightweight-kids-bikes/
I picked up my daughters new one yesterday (a 62 hybrid) and i'm seriously impressed with it.  It's proper lightweight compared to other kids bikes i've bought in the past (Specialized hot rock 12"/16" etc) and has lovely finishing touches such as lock on grips.  Pretty good value as well I reckon.

First of all, thanks for all the helpful responses. So much choice out there for a youngin' these days. We have spoken to the young man and he says he wants both styles of bike; so we are going to get probably a mid-level balance bike and a nice BMX. Looking good, Chubby.

BUT it won't be available in time.

Then saw this:

His mami wants him to have the lesser version of this (below). Comes with loose bearings everything, and I think, FOAM TIRE INNERS. She says she likes the way it looks. Nothing against the Strider but I think there are better machines to be had for similar money. The United is only £150 but like I said, it's not out yet. You wouldn't believe the arguments that have jumped off over this bike. Lol. Anyways, here it is. Any comments?

United are bringing some balance bikes out this year, but I would get a 16" bmx and just take the pedals off, but get most importantly get a decent helmet

The isla rothan is fantastic! Get one. Show your other half the resale prices on eBay, you can't go wrong.
I honestly wouldn't bother with a BMX for a bit, too long/heavy and poor value, unusable brakes. My daughter had a second hand isla cnoc14 at 3yo, straight from a rothan, rode it first go, now has early rider belter, she is 4 and a bit now. It looks BMX like but way lighter, has brakes she can use and is fast as hell. Save the 16 inch BMX bikes til he is older..

Our daughter started on a Specialised Hotrock and is now (6) riding her lil ripper!
Our son (2) really wanted to ride the Hotrock but couldn't reach the floor! So we bought him a Halfords tiny balance bike for 30 notes and you now have to run to keep up with him!!  ;D

My 7yr old has additional needs and low muscle tone ,so can't balance too well and doesn't have the strength in her legs to pedal. Her sister (20 months) is mad for bikes so I'm going to get her a balance bike at tomorrow .
