Title: Damaged Crown Race - Would You Or Would You Not...
Post by: Retrodan72 on June 07, 2014, 03:40 PM
...risk using one?

I was having trouble getting this on the raised bit on the fork tube, so I took it to my mums garage and put the tube in the vice, and banged it on with the end of a file, and a hammer.

I have done this before, but subsequently, this time the crown race has cracked.

I'm quite happy to build the rest if the headset up and ride on this...

...unless one if you guys say NO, this will end in Britney's.

Surely it can't do any harm?

Discuss?

The risk you have of using that Dan is, the bearings will keep rolling over the split and you will eventually damage them, or flatten a part of the face, causing your steering to become 'notchy'.

I would replace it with a new one but file round the part that the race goes over OR, file around the centre of the race to make it bigger inside, if that makes sense  :D

It's all good now, whizzed the damaged one off and replaced it with a spare from the spares box.

Cheers for the advice Terry.
