You chaecked for weld blobs/shrinkage inside the seattube where that plate that goes around the seattube? Maybe the frames been repaired and the tubes been 'knocked in' a bit by the reweld?

Also you should use grease not WD40 on seattubes. WD40 sucks the balls etc unless you're using it for a bit of cleaning - as it's not a lubricant.

There may be some rust inside the seat tube. Might be worth giving it a light sanding down. I use a piece of sandpaper taped to a round piece of dowling wood or the handle of a screwdriver. Do a small bit at a time. Don't go crazy as you want the post to be snug, but still be able to be moved.

shall i just go ahead and buy a 22.2mm layback ?

who wants this gt layback - i sanded some paint off ( to see if it would help 'entering ' ) - but is still cool. ?

I personally wouldn't leave that post in for the fear that it would get stuck
22.2 would be the right size for the frame so this is always gonna be mega tight and over time it could fuse esp if you been filing so its clean bare metal to bare metal
had one of those gt posts and sold it due to fitting problems
regards
