Title: The best thing to help grips on with.........
Post by: McQUEEN on September 12, 2014, 09:51 AM
I forgot this one from bitd but the easiest way to get a set of grips on is to use hair spray - I struggled last weekend to get these Oakleys on and last night, after a trip to Boots and a big smile from the sales assistant (I was thinking that she thinks I'm hot / she was thinking no way he uses hairspray, he needs regain), these slipped on it about 15 seconds each. Stoked.

An oldie but a goodie bud. Hairspray on, WD40 off.

It doesn't work with all hairsprays though, if you buy some of the new "strong" stuff your grips can stick like glue in seconds...

WD40 to put on and take off has never failed

Water. To take them off, to put them on, costs less than all the above.

Before I put them on I always put them in boiling water first. Although remember to put some gloves on when fitting. I do the same to take them off, soak the bar end in boiling water. Then they just pull off.  :daumenhoch:

Just found a problem with the hairspray........the wife came home and could smell it and wondered who I'd had in the house. She really believes these bikes are an obsession when she found out I'd actually bought hairspray! :LolLolLolLol:

I normally use cable ties, Slide 3 or 4 into the end slide onto bars and using pliers pull cable ties out.
But last set I did I used brake cleaner.

Isopropanol alcohol, I 'borrow' it from work, slides on then evaporates.

I've always used hairspray. On inside of grip and round bar ends. Important to let it go tacky first, then quickly twist the grips on and even them up. Overnight it dries fast, no slip. As it's mostly water soluble it should come off squirting hot water up ya grips....ooooh. Sounds rude!

I tried the cable ties and got in a mess. I'm dubious spraying lubricant is a good idea, worst thing ever yanking ya bars to find you have grips in your hands but ya bikes wayyyy over there?!?!

IPA I would think could potentially harm the rubber making it brittle? Dunno. Just way my brains wired.

I used to use hair lacquer too but raced in the rain a couple of year back & the grip started to loosen when they got wet through.
Same thing happened to my daughter when she was out on her Cali in the rain but the grip came off in her hand.
Since then I use car lacquer. It works pretty much the same but is water proof.

Getting them off is just a screw driver down to crack the seal.

surely using wd40 to put your grips would make them slip off all the time...   ???

I've always used washing up water (same amount as you would put in a bowl to wash up in),  then exactly the same amount to take them off...

I used to use that all the time when I worked in the PCB industry. We would wait for one of the lads to go for a shit, allow him to get comfy, then flood the cubicle with it by tipping 5L under the bog door.  :D

I'm fighting the demons. My GP said fresh air & sprouts will end this possession.

Don`t fook about with any of that-the joys of ODI Lock-Ons:)  When I use regular grips I use a couple of big zip ties and just slide the grips over them then pull  the ties out.

I was gonna say hands :-)

WD40 is great as long as you leave it to set first.

Weld the fukkers on.

As stated - zip-ties on, Stanley knife for off.

Or hands if you're special  :)
