Title: Newschool wheelset advice needed
Post by: Spen69 on October 30, 2014, 01:38 PM
I have a bit of cash left over from some recent sales and was thinking of upgrading my current park bike wheelset >:D

Nothing wrong with my current set-up, I can use them on another bike I bought recently. I'm running a 48 spoke, 10t Prolite sealed with Ti axle and driver on a Sun Black Box rim on the rear, with a 36 spoke sealed Prolite front laced into a Sun Black Box rim. Overall a really good wheelset, but not exactly the latest thoughts on hubs and rims as you can see below :daumenhoch:

(http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa149/Spen69/Spen69002/IMG_8893_zps85733d35.jpg) (http://s196.photobucket.com/user/Spen69/media/Spen69002/IMG_8893_zps85733d35.jpg.html)

I'm tempted by something tasty like a G-Sport set-up with Marmoset front, Ratchet rear on probably Birdcage rims but it's eye-watering money so are they that good? I read the Ratchet has roller bearings and has a lifetime guarentee and we refer to George French as the Mad Professor when he occaisionally rides with us, so I know he knows his stuff as a mechanical Engineer and see his products every skatepark I ride at :coolsmiley:

So before I shell out that kind of cash, what other options are there you'd recommend? My riding style is "rubbish to poor at best, but does try harder" if that helps :2funny:

Cheers Rob - for some reason it's coming up in USD :2funny:

Not bad mate, and available in gold to match ::)

To be honest I would go comfortably to £200 without blinking then £300 would be beans on toast for the month, so close to £400 for the G-Sports is close to selling a kidney or something....

But I do like BMX City, they've looked after us in the past and we know a secret weapon from Nottz who seems to get even better prices, so I might ask him on sat night if he can help haggle a bit >:D :2funny:

I'm far too biased to comment in this thread.

Don't get me wrong Ben, if I can justify how much better the G-Sport set is I will pay the money but it is a whole lot of cash you have to admit mate :-\

I am a great believer in you get what you pay for,  but over three times the price is a big leap of faith mate :coolsmiley:

i,ve been using chrome gsport ribcage rims for the last 5 years and the chrome is still perfect. good light strong rims. if you dont use pegs then 10mm axles will be fine and most modern hubs will be up to the job. the gsport ratchet hub can be run left or right hand drive too by changing the direction of the pawls, you can even change the direction of one of the pawls to run a fixed wheel. i use a profile mini hub on the front and a khe freecoaster on the rear and it's probably the best smoothest wheels i,ve had.

;D ha ha, yeah gsport is pricey alright. I just looked

The wheels you have are good spen, cheap-ish wheels won't be an "upgrade" for you. Bide your time and spend wisely  ;)

Why don't you split them Spen, treat yourself to a nice custom rear wheel, G sport rim is £70 at Custom riders in chrome, choose a hub you like and they'll build it for you.  In a month or so do a front one

They have Primo remix hubs at £100.  You can't go wrong with them.......I've got Cult hubs which are the same and they're really nice

Wise words Ben :coolsmiley:

Thanks for the advice lads, I just wish my rear wasn't a 48h so I could just lace a set of G-Sport rims onto them as the hubs are pretty good tbh thinking about it. I can see me sticking to what I have at the moment but the real question was are the G-Sport set worth the money I suppose :coolsmiley:

Is any of it worth it Spen?

A good set of wheels is one of the best upgrades on any bike

Never had any issues with my Proper wheelset.
Check some of the bargain basements of various online stores and you should be able to build yourself a very nice wheel.
Sounds like you are more concerned with the rear wheel, So like Rob said do that one first and maybe do the front in the new year.

Spen, that rear hub is probably about 6 years old now and never been serviced i bet?  i'd treat yourself to a new hub as well.........Custom riders have rear Profile hubs for £100 which are 10mm so would fit your rear dropouts  :daumenhoch:

Go for a all gsport set up, yes its expensive and they are a little heavier than other wheel combos but they will last years

I run ribcage rims built into a ratchet rear and a marmoset front

Had them a few years now and they have been faultless, only minor truing has ever been needed :daumenhoch:
