Rich, handy tool is http://www.danscomp.com/products/charts/gearchart.htm
Select wheel and tyre size and away you go.
-
41-18, 36-16 are the two I use.
Hows the build going Rich? manage to sort the rear wishbone out?
:) DINGO :)
p.s seatpost is ace thanks :daumenhoch:

41-81 and 39-17 is little bigger.
-
39-16 for me :)
-
Got 39-16 on a newer Floval which works well, or 38-16 for commuting if I'm feeling lazy. Problem is old school bikes and getting hold of a chainring in the high 30s. Got a project on the go at the moment with a 42t so will probably go for 18t on the back and see how it goes.
-
ran 36-16 on me floval flyer and using the same on me kuwi. quick out the gate and acceleration but you got to be strong in the legs to get round the track.

or try this

39-17. Tried 36-16 on NS cruisers and it spind too much for me.
-
I usually run 41-17...It depends alot on your legs and enviroment (downhill or flat..)
If you can,try out a couple of variations to see how quickly you pedal out...
-
Great thanks Guys , that makes sense cheers
Dingo , had someone look at tthe weld , and they have said that to be fair , the weld should be stronger than the metal and to ride it, if it breaks he will fix it with a plate under the BB shell , but to not bother as it is not cosmetic i am bothered about.
we shall see , i am only going to cruise on it anyway.

Then do you need to factor in the length of the crank as well? I presume the longer the crank, the more leverage you'll get...so you can run a bigger front cog?
So, if you're running a 36-16 on a 26" wheel with 170mm cranks, you could run a 39-16 with 175mm cranks? Does anyonw know an offical wheel size : front sprocket : back sprocket : crank length ratio/calculation?
Confussed.

You think its confucing now, wait till you start taking the replys to this into consideration.
But also tyre size makes a huge differance ie 1.75, 1.95 etc.
I use 30/13 on my cruiser.

I thought it best to try pretty much every gearing until I find one that's comfortable, allows me to pedal without feeling like my lungs are about to burst and doesn't make me feel like a fat git on a kid's bike. The search continues.

i did use 39-16 worked well with 180 cranks real fast.
