Title: New to Forum, old school head!
Post by: BillyKnight on November 08, 2014, 01:50 PM
Hello,
Billy here, old racer on my Redline 500 mk2 back in 82-85. Got out of bikes but recently bought a new floval flyer which is just great. Ridden it a couple of times but much practice to do, pretty rusty after all those years. Great fun though.
Good to see you people all keen on BMX. A great sport, and great times had back then. 8)
Keep it rad,
Billy.

Cheers Griff,
I was lucky enough to get that 500 Redline new in Brisbane in 83. It had all DX gear but not the flite cranks. I think they were one piece sugino or something like that, but with a nice alloy spider. Mine was a mix of blue and red bits but the wheels were red with red hubs and the levers and calipers were blue. Moved to NZ later in the year and raced it til around 85. Now living in Southampton.
I got a trip to the states in 85 and put a pro neck (or was it tuf-neck? can't remember now) disc spider thing and stem on it, plus the newer grey and black pads, and fashionable orangey sunrise redline frame sticker kit (600a?) It was cool.CW replica bars and laid back post in the end, loved it!! Sold it when I got a bit tall and bought some new ski gear which I used a lot, I wish I still had it.

Floval flyer good........

Thanks everyone,
I am keen to get out on the bike, even through the winter if its dry...
Loads of practice needed, my local track is Knightwood, Eastleigh near Southampton. Its very good but a little bit daunting, the first couple of jumps will need courage that first time..we'll get there.

I'll keep an eye on the site and could see myself travelling around a bit to catch up and do some riding. Please do post your plans people, as I would really like to do some casual riding, not sure if I am ready for all the hype of proper race days again. Looking at the bikes, fiddling round and just a bit of low key cruising round and a few beers in the evening would suit me. Forget about reality for a few moments, you know.

As much as I loved my old Redline I think I am unlikely to build another old school bike, so many other things to do, and pay for!!
But hey, the floval flyer is so pretty and goes like a dream!
I'll keep practising..

Billy.

Thanks People,
got to say that despite yesterdays sensible comments about not building an old school bike, you do see some frames and things for sale and the heart says "do it" ::)
Some of the bits around seem pretty good value, I am not too worried about making an original original bike but would like one that is period, the thing is we were modding these bikes before they even left the shop then changed bits all the time. I think I had different grips and things when mine was new, then over the years swapped bars, stems, pedals, pads stickers and all the rest.

We'd meet down at the track I'd say I like your cranks, he'd say I like yours and before long the swap was done. Never a thought that we might be forever bodging something that in the future might be quite valuable..

So yeah, maybe I will fiddle about to build an old school racer, but it'll be rad not original, like they all were in the 80s. What we need to do is get the race series really going then fence sitters like me would get a move on :slayer:

Good forum, rad on!!!

Yup i second that. After years of doing nothing but gaming n computers i spend time trawling for parts  and that elusive build. Got 2  on go at moment. One nearly done and one about to start building. Thoroughly hooked.

Im like Billy in that mostly had frankenstein bikes made up of traded and borrowed parts off mates or even kids down the skatepark. I remember trading 3 piece cranks for one piece at ROM one day!!

Build it like you want Billy it don't have to be totally original. What i do is ensure the drive gear, pedals and handlebar areas are newish cos i'm a bit hard on mine. 30 year old metal surely has developed metal fatigue along its lifespan surely.

Something to consider when you get your first project.

Despite the above i also have huge respect to some awesomely dedicated original era builders that certainly have my jaw dropping frequently on here. Big up them too.

First off thanks to you all for the welcomes and chat. Top bunch of people!

Fitted a neat little pair of chain tugs to the Flyer today which is good as it'll protect the drop outs from the paint and bash damage that my old bike copped over the years

To the thoughts of a proper old bike, yes it'd be really lovely to build up something. I had the Redline, it was an 82 model MX2. There was a 600c frame on ebay this week but a bit tatty and one of the first Taiwanese ones so I sort of dipped out. I worked in a bike shop as a kid and remember well brand new Hutches for sale there, wow they were expensive! I love the Hutch, Redline, CW etc stuff. To be fair there probably wasn't much in it but at that age it all seemed so exotic.

Building an old bike could cost a bit but my old bike didn't have flight cranks and all that and it went well, all cr-mo light, strong and just really cool. If anyone's got a frame set they would part with that would be great. I think another Redline really MX2 or 3 or a 600a.

There is lots on and money is tight for everyone I'm sure. I got into motorbike racing after the BMX thing and still have a few of them, currently giving my old 1974 Ducati 450 a big freshen up which it really deserves :smitten: It went all the way really and I even managed to get a ride in the NZ GP in 2002 where I finished a not too bad 13th on a 125 Honda  :slayer:

So, all good. Thanks again. I will show up at some rides when the weather is a bit warmer and carry on dreaming. There's no rush, but the will is there!!

Thanks again. Billy.

Lee may still have this if you're after a 600a.  :daumenhoch:

Cool, that looks pretty good.

At the time I had a chrome bike (MX2 which I tarted up with 600a stickers) but lusted after a white bike, here's a white bike!

I have PM'd this Gent and if he still has the frame and forks...well this could be the beginning of another magical journey, or something like that :teef:

Someone did make the point about being happily married, what I am going to do? I'll have to prepare my strategy. Do I tell her I am planning on building it for our Daughter, or try to break it to her gently when I choose that right moment? :smitten: Can't hide it, we share the account and she is forever in my shed >:(

This is going to take some serious bull**** artistry.

Will keep you posted, and thanks for the nod ref that bike.

Billy.

Well Billy you can either be tinkering around in your shed and she knows you're not up to no good......

Or you could be shagging away the family savings on fast cars and loose women.

......on second thoughts....

WAIT!

What the hell am i doing with these little bikes and a box of nuts n bolts?????

Oh wait.....that right....remember now.....

I'm poor.
