ok i built a similar bike last year but was never 100% happy with it as a true replica. there was a few of the components
that were close but not perfect and it was built on an 85 frame which tbh was wrong. so with the chance that eddie fiola
may actually be critiquing it himself at cleethorpes ride in the summer i thought i would start again and build it as close to
the original bike he rode on the Kellogg's tour in 84.
so i finally have all the parts ready to build now and i will be building it on christmas day because i have the aerospeeds as a christmas present :D

Quality detail pal, please add to this with the history of the research you did it's a cool thread pal, happy Christmas..
I can't wait for Eddie to see it and even better sign the bike ..... ;)
-
Can't beat a flying banana! an inspirational rider and bike :4_17_5:
-
finally got it outside today in the daylight to take some photos of it built up. :)
the plan was to spend christmas day evening building it, which i started to do but when it came to fitting the
cranks i discovered that the spindle hadn't been threaded on one side in the factory  so i couldn't finish it :tickedoff:
over the christmas period i raped a profile spindle from another build as a temporary fix, just so i could finish building.
anyway its just about finished now and as much as i can tell its the closest replica to the original that I've seen. unless someone knows different ;) ;)

It's a great bike with superb detail. :4_17_5:
The main signature needed for this bike though is missing from the plate, fortunately, if you speak to Mr Swannick and attend his Cleethorpes ride, then this can be possible for you. :daumenhoch:

Proper nice that mate, i still can never understand how he ran the front MX1000 like that though ;D
-
looks nice but those tyres are repop dude, sidewall tan colour all wrong (too bright) and side thread pattern wrong!!!!not early GT tyres....... just saying if you want it bang on, ive got OCD when it comes to GT :idiot2: :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: and im pretty sure eddie didnt use GT forks on the 84, jason finns got a bang on replica and remember him saying they wernt GT and when i see it they wernt, cant remember what make they though :-\

the tyres have been of debate, I'm not 100% sure either way. every repo GT tyre i have seen look different to these .the repo's are all made in china and have VANCOM on them. mine are taiwan and the tread pattern is different. i know shinko ones had the GT logo on the side wall but GT did make non logo tyres. you maybe correct but the debate continues :)
again your right with the forks, I've yet to find out what the exact forks was but the race forks are as close to them as i can find and keep it GT ;)
finny's build was amazing and has been an inspiration but that was the winterland bike, this is the kellogg's theres a few subtle differences :daumenhoch:
-
wrong seat
in what way?? :)
-
They were CW forks 👍
-
They were CW forks 👍
really? do you have any more info?? the ones on finny's dont look like CW? :daumenhoch:
-
I've asked this question about the Forks...
I settled on a 84 set of Pro Forks...
I couldn't find the answer to the one's on the Winterland Bike, but I'm not building an exact replica anyhow...
On the seat , I was informed Eddie's original bike had a 'Shotgun' on it...
Regardless of the above , your bike is beautiful... :daumenhoch:

cheers mate :4_17_5:
seat is defiantly kashimax theres plenty of photos documenting it. eddie told someone the cranks he used were profiles when they were actually aerospeeds, you have to take into account back then parts didn't mean a thing to the pros and asking them to remember 30 + years later your bound to get discrepancies :)
-
I remember reading that Eddie used Shotgun first , but they kept breaking , thus the change...
Have you seen this Rep...

yeah seen that one mate along with every other rep thats been built over the years, they all differ slightly. I've tried to base mine
on actual pics from BITD :) :)
-
For what it is worth these guys rode so hard in those days that parts were changed weekly, probably daily.
Despite much research there is no definitive picture of an 85 GT World Tour bike either.
Build to your best effort and resource but always remember the sentiment.
Nothing will EVER be the same.
Love the hobby, love the bike :daumenhoch:

too right, this build was based on one bike that has stuck with me since 1984 when fiola visited our local track. its the bike i lusted after as a kid and the bike that brought me back into the OS scene :smitten: :smitten:
-
Proper nice that mate, i still can never understand how he ran the front MX1000 like that though ;D
I remember we ran our brakes the same way for a summer after we saw Eddie Fiola at Rom. I asked him why and he said you got better stopping power as the caliper is pressed against the forks when you braked....
-
A magnificent build mate ... Top top work! "wantit"
There will always be haters and the anal retentive ( believe me I can often fall into this category myself so no offence to those who've replied in this thread) .... Nether the less too work :4_17_5: ... I've seen Eddie ride with a one piece crank on one version of the banana bike so I guess you pick the build you love the best! :daumenhoch:
-
Stunning build , first class through out :4_17_5: :4_17_5:
-
Smashing :4_17_5: Well worth the wait in collecting parts. 8) :daumenhoch:
-
farkin beaut man!
-
Great build mate, looks fantastic, you must remember that everyone has different standard of builds and many debates on what was used, all I know is what was used on my Winterland, the hardest things to get on the winterland are the fat and skinny very very early gt tyres, I'v never seen these in any condition let alone nos, the Oakleys Ed used were .5s and then the forks ;) which are hens teeth, he also used 1st gen GT Framestanders for 84' again rare as rocking Horse shite, and he used a 43T chainring👍 the cranks were profile cranks as well! Again depends on how anal you are, but looks like you won a bike medal build at MK so who am I saying any difference.....well done mate!
I have done an additional 3 more Fiola builds and there are different variants to each bike, so it's best to build a bike from a particular event or picture and go with that, me and Eddie have a 85' King of the skateparks with the 20x3/8 skinny wheels, Eddie was at my house last month and I had to tell him that he had wrong parts on his bike, so it shows you how he cannot remember everything he used, he signed my winterland and I took a video and he said it was a 85' bike lol but it's a 84' I'll get the link to the video, about 5 to 10 posts down. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jason-Finn/519902628086739'ref=ts&fref=ts
All the best
Finny
Here are some pics of the parts
-
Lovely build Mr Dibbly!!
Finny it's cool that you know the legend that is Eddie ;)
One thing that strikes me (especially after seeing your video) is that I think as enthusiasts, and the obvious sentimental
attachment we have to memories of childhood, is that I think maybe we care about the small details a little bit too much!
I'm not sure where i'm going with this, it's just that the man himself, who's bikes we all try and replicate, can't really tell what year the frame is, yet we are willing to pay whatever it takes to get the exact nos chain ring bolts for said bike!
Really it's just the difference in lives I guess, Eddie was that bit older, the pro, he did this day in day out(i'm sure it wasn't always fun)with different components given to him all the time, I suppose however cool it was, it was his job.
Me however I was 10, glued to my nan's tv looking at him like he was some kind of god(still do!)hence why I still love this stuff so much.
Anyway I don't know what that was all about...... back to the meds!!
Cracking build dwain :daumenhoch:
-
It was great to see this build in the flesh at MK... Stunning! "wantit"
.... Oh and your dog wasn't half bad either! ::)

That there's a nice bike :daumenhoch:
